Minor crease at top right near fine. </em></p><p>Esther Williams during her youthful first years at MGM. Born in Inglewood CA her youth was spent becoming a United States National swimming champ. Spotted by an MGM talent scout while working at a LA department store she was brought to MGM where the swimming musical was built around her. To learn the ropes of moviemaking she made her film debut in <em>Andy Hardy's Double Life</em> in 1942.</p><p>This portrait with an ink stamp of 1939 1 was one of her earliest publicity portraits presenting her as the new girl-next-door.</p> Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Fine. </em></p><p>Popular songstress Ginny Simms made her MGM debut for 1944's <em>Broadway Rhythm</em> for which this photo publicized. After years of radio recording and big band singing notably with Kay Kyser's orchestra she ventured into movies. During her brief stay at MGM she was escorted about town by none other than Louis B. The program covers have a bit of beginning rippling and overall beginning darkening to the paper. The text pages are clean and bright. The program is illustrated throughout with both black and white sepia and full color illustrations. The booklet includes Facts about the production a complete list of characters / actors and in-depth information about the two main characters Rhett Butler and Scarlet O'Hara by the actors playing them Clark Gable & Vivien Leigh. Vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm. black-and-white photo and four-page memo one page typed and 3 pp. mimeograph copy. About fine. </em></p><p>Presented is Margaret Mitchell's biography file with her headshot portrait typed memo from Howard Dietz' MGM Advertising and Publicity department and a three-page typed biography. Dated 12-11-39 this is the release which went to all advertising departments to publicize the premiere of the epic film adaptation of her bestselling novel <em>Gone With the Wind</em>.</p><p>The bio tells of her life as a writer taking ten years from 1926-36 to write her Pulitzer Prize-winning book which would be her only published novel. The photo and bio come in its original file folder and the cover letter has "Star File" written at top. <em>Gone With the Wind</em> would have its world premiere in Atlanta GA on Dec 15 1939. Mitchell producer David O. Selznick and much of the main cast would attend. The publicity and advertising campaign for the film were the biggest achieved for a film up to that time.</p> Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Academy Awards' Best Actress for MGM's Mrs. Miniver Greer Garson and Best Actor for Warner Brothers' Yankee Doodle Dandy James Cagney hold their statuettes as Cagney dabs Garson's tears for the MGM photographer. Though the Academy had their official photographers the studios — which basically ran and determined the winners at the time — were allowed to have their own images too. For the 1942 Awards held in early-1943 the winners appear to have been given the gold statuettes. Later during the war years winners would be given plaster versions which they were allowed to trade for gold statues after the end of World War II. Minor wear near fine. </em></p><p>Greer Garson launches into her acceptance speech for her Academy Award as Best Actress for 1942 for her role in <em>Mrs. Miniver</em>. She is presented by 1941's winner Joan Fontaine. Garson is known to have made the longest Academy speech in history; because of that speeches were thereafter given time limits.</p><p>The award seen in the image is likely one made of painted plaster as the awards given out in 1943-45 were made of plaster due to a shortage of metal. During the World War II years of 1943-1945 for films released 1942-1944 because of metal shortages the statuettes were made in plaster. Winners were given the option to trade them in once the war ended. This is an MGM studio photo taken by an MGM photographer and used by the studio to promote Garson and her win. Set of four vintage original 8 x 10" 20 x 25 cm double weight black-and-white photos all with mimeographed text on verso overall fine. Heitor Villa-Lobos 1887-1959 was the foremost South American classical composer of his generation. He came for the first time to Hollywood in 1958 to write the score for the film Green Mansions set in Brazilian jungles which starred Audrey Hepburn and was directed by her husband Mel Ferrer. Wikipedia One photo is a portrait of the composer; another includes him Hepburn and her pet Yorkshire terrier; another shows him seated at a gala dinner with Hepburn and two others; and the last shows the two of them she is helping light his cigar Ferrer and a few other dignitaries. As it happens the composer died in November of 1959 -- not long after ending his memorable visit to Hollywood. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unknown

Jacques Tourneur on left and Peter Smith on right face a supposed case of radium for the Oscar-nominated short film ROMANCE OF RADIUM. Tourneur had previously directed a few features in France in the early 1930s but he did not get to direct a feature in the US until two years after this film. Tourneur of course went on to direct such classics as THE CAT PEOPLE and OUT OF THE PAST. Peter Smith produced and narrated a series of over 200 kuttke shorts for MGM. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer unknown

Donning a red wig to cover her platinum blonde hair Jean Harlow moved to star status at MGM. In this rare behind-the-scenes image we see her at work seducing boss Chester Morris on a set consisting of a tiny phone booth as director Jack Conway and crew do their creative jobs.
