Gardner Mary R. Gardner and J. G. St. Clair Drake lived among the people of Natchez Mississippi as well-trained participant-observers investigating how class and caste informed daily life in a typical southern community. From the front flap: ''They saw the restrictions imposed upon the Negroes the patterns of case deference the constantly subordinate role At the same time they saw what this means to the individual Negro: hos problems of adjustment his anxieties and frustrations his reveries of rebellion or escape. Here are the ''poor-but-respectables the lower middles the ancestor-worshiping ''old families'' the upper uppers the new status-proud Negro upper class the ''poor whites'' and the ''common'' or folk Negroes. "We build our lamps for both Oil keroseneand Candle burning . Any of our lamps can be equipped electrically at a slight additional cost." Warner lamps were known as high quality solidly built from premium materials. Founded in 1877 and serving the Victorian-era carriage trade Warner made the successful transition triggered by the "horseless carriage." By 1900 the founder's son Thomas W Warner Jr expanded into the growing automotive business making gears a two-cylinder engine and other auto parts opening a major manufacturing facility in Toledo Ohio and the Muncie Gear Works in Muncie Indiana for speedometers and automobile transmission gears. In 1915 Warner Jr sold the Toledo operation to Walter Durant and its operations were integrated into GM's Chevrolet Division. The Muncie plant became "Warner Gear" continuing to supply other car makers and was one of four companies merged in 1928 to form Borg-Warner. The trade catalog features eighteen different priced models for a wide range of horse-drawn vehicle types and needs. Quite uncommon late Victorian vehicle lighting trade catalog with no copies present in OCLC and a corporate history that continued onward in the automotive industry. ; 20 pages .
