brossura I film western ci fanno vedere le carovane con i carri, ma non ci dicono nulla dei carri stessi, della durata del viaggio, del cibo e della vita quotidiana dei pionieri. Ci parlano del Far West, senza dirci cosa esso fosse in realtà; ci fanno vedere sceriffi e saloon, senza che possiamo saperne la storia e come essi fossero per davvero; ci fanno vedere locomotive sbuffanti e battelli a vapore, ma non ci dicono nulla di essi; ci mostrano soldati a cavallo e i loro forti, ma non ci parlano della loro vita quotidiana. Vediamo gli Indiani, generalmente mostratici come cattivi, senza quasi mai dircene i motivi. Questo elenco potrebbe continuare a lungo: cowboys, tipi di case di indiani e pionieri, corse all'oro, bordelli, assegnazione della terra ai pionieri... Se qualcuno ha curiosità al riguardo, potrà trovare delle risposte, non pedanti, in questo libro.

Per comprendere l'importanza di "Alba fatale" nel canone della letteratura western, è sufficiente leggere «Ratto», una novella di Stephen King inclusa nella sua ultima raccolta, Se scorre il sangue. Il protagonista, uno scrittore terrorizzato dal fallimento, riesce finalmente a scrivere il romanzo che ha sempre sognato, ambientato in una cittadina di frontiera nell'Ottocento. E il suo vecchio professore di scrittura creativa commenta così il risultato raggiunto: «Trovo che sia molto buono. Non all'altezza di Alba fatale, forse...» Pubblicato nel 1940 e portato sul grande schermo da William Wellman, con un cast di grande livello guidato da Henry Fonda, "Alba fatale" si svolge in una cittadina del selvaggio West alla fine dell'Ottocento, e offre un ritratto crudo e realistico della vita di frontiera e della violenza che ne scandisce i ritmi quotidiani. Incentrato sul linciaggio di tre uomini accusati ingiustamente di un furto di bestiame e di un omicidio, e sulla tragedia che si scatena quando la legge e l'ordine sociale vengono calpestati, il romanzo di Clark elabora la mitologia western trasformandola in una storia universale sul bene e il male, sul rapporto tra individuo e comunità, tra giustizia e natura umana.
