1838131290London: 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Very Good. London 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Foolscap folio 21 1 docket pages with numerous tables. Uncut and sewn as issued; outer pages slightly dusty; light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper Number 685 of 1838. The bulk of this important paper pages 4-19 is given over to 'Nos. 5 6 7. Copy of a Despatch from Governor Sir James Stirling bearing Date 15 October 1835 forwarding a Memorial from the Inhabitants of Western Australia; together with a Copy of the Answer which has been returned thereto'. It is somewhat more than that. Stirling's covering letter explains that 'The signatures attached to this memorial . belong to about one-third of the adult male population of the settlement and represent also about one third of its property in land and capital. The grievances under which the memorialists consider themselves and their fellow colonists to labour are five in number'. The five grievances are well-aired; all signatories are identified; there are five pages of lists of lands reserved for public purposes individuals or 'Assigned to or Reserved for Civil Naval and Military Officers from commencement of the Colony in June 1829 to 6 October 1835'. The second and third lists provide name rank or situation where applicable number of acres district assigned or reserved - and when and remarks. A sample record for an individual is that pertaining to Robert Ramsay for whom an 'uncertain' number of acres was reserved at Plantagenet on 12 April 1831: 'Master of brig "Britannia". On south shore of Princes Royal Harbour reserved 18 months to form a whaling establishment and then resumed on failure of conditions'. The last four pages in this section contain Lord Glenelg's thoughts on the matter as of 7 March 1837. The limited information relating to the fledgling colony of South Australia occupies only pages 20 and 21. Ferguson 2511. <p>Provenance: the signature 'C.A.S. Hawker' is written in pencil at the head of the first page. Charles Allan Seymour Hawker 1894-1938 politician and pastoralist: his grandfather George Charles Hawker arrived in Adelaide with his brother Charles in September 1840. They settled on land at Bungaree near Clare in December 1841; C.A.S. Hawker he was born there. He was seriously wounded on several occasions at the Western Front losing one eye and 'his legs were in surgical irons to the end of his life'. He was a minister in the Lyons Government from 1932 until he 'was killed on 25 October 1938 when the aircraft "Kyeema" crashed into Mount Dandenong in Victoria. His untimely death was sharply felt. He had been an outstanding and respected figure in the Federal parliament whom some of his own party would have supported as prime minister. Primarily a series of signed testimonials solicited by the Railway to describe "the Dakota boom." Farmers relate their experiences settling and cultivating the land detail their crop yields and profits from cattle ranching and encourage further settlement as land is still inexpensive and readily available. Several describe the settlers as "a most excellent class of people" who are educated industrious and and morally upright. And if that’s not incentive enough there’s the unsurpassed healthfulness of the air which is "free from malaria and full of inspiring oxygen and invigorating ozone." 3 copies found in OCLC. Due to unthawed pack ice -through several summers - they had to abandon the "Investigator" to her fate in the ice. Lightly foxed old folds Very Good.<br/><br/> This evidently unrecorded broadside recounts the proceedings of a Convention. held at the State Capitol in Springfield to determine the feasibility of a regional program to advance the cultivation of sorghum or Chinese sugar cane. Notice of the Convention was reported in the Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal for 30 December 1857: "It is confidently believed that the Chinese Sugar Cane is well 'adapted to our soil and climate' and that it can be successfully and profitably cultivated and manufactured into molasses and sugar." <br/> The Agricultural Committee submitted information from growers and processors in Kentucky Pennsylvania Ohio and Indiana. The Mechanical Committee could not produce an acceptable proposal for a processing machine and the Convention adjourned with a recommendation that Illinois delegates gather more information for a future convention. Efforts to stimulate the growth of northern sugar cane continued through the succeeding decades.<br/>As of October 2019 not located on OCLC or the online sites of AAS NYPL Newberry Harvard Yale U MI. Signed by sixty-one petitioners from the Township of Nelson. A dampstain runs through the right edge of the petition light scattered foxing. Very Good. <br/><br/> This is a petition for the Court to provide the village of Garrettsville Ohio with a justice of the peace. Garrettsville was founded in 1804 by Col. John Garrett III and was officially incorporated in 1864. The citizens complain that the township of Nelson had only two justices neither of which was easily accessible to Garrettsville leaving Garrettsville "entirely destitute." The petition is followed by the signatures of sixty-one residents. The Court refused the request. <br/> Among the signers is Elisha Garrett son of Garrettsville's founder; Lyman W. Trask 1809-1863 a physician and editor of the Western Pearl a short-lived literary newspaper of the 1830s; Edwin Atwood who built the Garrettsville Grist-mill with Leman Ferry and the first church with John Garrett; and Abraham Dyson a blacksmith and War of 1812 veteran. Closed tear to margin paper reinforcement to corners verso very good condition quite bright and attractive. Very Good. An attractive advertisement for the Chicago and North-Western’s routes to San Francisco printed during the tenure of the railroad tycoon Marvin Hughitt as General Manager a position he held from 1876 to 1880 before being named Second Vice President. The advertisement was printed by Rand McNally and Company which in its early years focused on railroad-related materials. The Omaha and California line of the Chicago and North-West Railway connected passengers from Chicago to California. Other maps printed by Rand McNally and Co. during the period illustrate the route. The text is divided into two distinct parts : a narrative of the journey itself, combining geographical, logistical, and military observations, followed by extensive appendices presenting the scientific results of the expedition, including meteorological and astronomical observations, geological notes, and natural history data. A primary source for the history of the American Southwest. The plates provide early visual documentation of California, Native American populations, scientific observations, and contemporary military operations. The large folding engraved map, entitled Military Reconnoissance of Arkansas, Rio del Norte, and Rio Gila (dated 1847), is the cartographic centerpiece of the work. Compiled from original field observations, it provides the first comprehensive official mapping of the regions traversed by the expedition, integrating military routes, topography, settlements, barometric profiles, and tables of distances and elevations. 188327755Perth: Goverment Printer 1883. Robert Fairbairn the prominent 19th century Western Australian magistrate is the appointee to whom this "Minute" is aimed. He would soon be in charge of the Kimberley district and Wrenfordsley was at the time of this writing the Acting Governor of Western Australia. Unusually this is not recorded on either Trove or the State Library of Western Australia. <br /> <br /> The "minute" advises Mr. Fairbairn on his duties which will involve ".those of the Judge the Collector of Customs and the Registrar". and he advises "the Magistrate to take his own notes of the evidence and not to trust to his clerk." It is most interesting for the directions of caution in meting out punishment to the aboriginal community. "As the dispenser of justice to an uncivilised race it is all important that he should appear to act with judicial calmness and deliberation." Settlers were to be discouraged from taking the law into their own hands. And the statues prohibiting the supply of liquor to natives were to be strictly enforced so that "in the remote and . peaceful wilds of the Kimberley country the white man's curse will long remain unknown." An early reader has commented at the top "This is good" and has also highlighted various sections of interest. <br /> <br /> At the time of this writing Wrenfordsley was Acting Governor of Western Australia however he had a long career in law as solicitor Attorney General of Jamaica Chief Justice of Western Australia and Chief Justice of Fiji. <br /> <br /> Foolscap folio 3pp black text on cream paper. A remarkable folio containing 17 large-scale draughtsman�s ink drawings of the Great Western Railway line between Tilehurst and Didcot England covering a 17-mile stretch at the extraordinary scale of 25 inches to the mile. Executed with meticulous precision these plans depict track layouts associated fields parish boundaries stations bridges and buildings as it passes the Thames River. Each sheet bears the stamp �Great Western Railway 25165 Engineers� Office Paddington� dated 1882 and initialled. The sequence begins with Sheet No. 37: �Parish of Tilehurst / Parish of St. Mary�s Reading� and concludes with Sheet No. 53: �Parish of Didcot / Parish of East Hagborne.� Of particular interest are the contemporary red ink annotations consisting of queries or requests for clarification likely in the hand of a senior engineer. These marginalia provide a rare insight into the working methods and exacting standards of the period. It forms an invaluable record of Victorian railway engineering practice. Beyond their technical value the drawings possess a striking aesthetic quality exemplifying the artistry of the 19th-century draughtsman. A very good copy in the original printed wrappers with some splitting at the spine and a few nicks but overall sound. The folding plate is in excellent condition. It shows a detailed image of the "Multiple Switch Board for Indianapolis." In 1881 just two years before this pamphlet was produced Alexander Graham Bell purchased the Western Electric Company which scholars have described as a crucial step in the standardization of telephone technology and equipment. Just a few years earlier telephone conversations could only be had between rented pairs of phones attached by a line that had no way to connect to other telephones. The switchboard allowed for operators to manually move connections between lines so that anyone with a telephone could call anyone else with a telephone-at least locally-and the technology rapidly improved from then on. Together the images contrast lived outdoor activity with constructed studio identity documenting both labor and presentation.<br /> <br /> These photographs align with broader patterns of African American migration and employment in the American West after the American Civil War when formerly enslaved individuals sought work in ranching cattle driving and related trades. Historians have noted that a substantial number of cowboys in the late nineteenth century were Black though their presence has often been underrepresented in popular narratives of the West. Visual documentation of African American riders and western dress provides primary evidence for the study of labor identity and mobility in this period particularly in relation to how individuals navigated new economic roles following emancipation. First editions of these thirteen early publications issued by the Oregon Pioneer Association featuring an invaluable separately printed index as well as the first local printing of Applegate’s famed “A Day with the Cow Column in 1843†which was first published in 1868 in the Overland Monthly. The account is still considered one of the best early first person accounts of pioneer families trekking across the Oregon Trail. Nesmith 1820-1885 has included his own memoir of the 1853 Rogue River War serving with General Joseph Lane and commanding forces at the pivotal 1853 engagement at Evans Creek resulting in the Table Rock Treaty. Within two years following the 1855 Lupton Massacre the Rogue River War renewed resulting in the forced removal of the Takelma Shasta and Applegate Indigenous Peoples to the Siletz Reservation. E.M. Provided are home plans showing that a three bedroom home to an eight bedroom home can be built for a low of $2000.00 to a high of $5000.00. Recommended counties in New Jersey are Bergen Passaic and Essex and Rockland County in New York. The railroad company provides most of the information for one to consider moving to the areas where expenses are considerably less there is room for growth and they can supply economic and regular transportation. Important early report on the Swan River Colony based on Captain Stirling's findings during his 1827 expedition and intended as a guide for prospective emigrants. The 29 page article is titled "Regulations for the Guidance of those who may Propose to embark as settlers for the New Settlement on the Western Coast of New Holland" and includes a one page woodblock map. The map "Sketch of the New Settlement on Swan River" has the text "Fine undulating grass plains thinly wooded" stretching from Mangles Bay to Port Leschenault. The WA coast is shown from above Swan River in the north around Cape Leeuwin and further to the East. Disbound from Vol XXXIX with the title page pp 315-344 with some extraneous pages. The total issue was $20000 and the bonds’ mature date was 10 years. Includes 30 coupons valued at $15 each.<br /> <br /> Nevadaville was founded in 1859 and is now a gold mining ghost town. It was once one of the most important mining settlements in the area and originally part of the Kansas Territory. It grew to house the miners working the Burroughs lode and the Kansas lode and the population was predominantly Irish. The Denver Litho Co unknown

A rare promotional pamphlet touting the services of Stanley's Western Detective Agency in Chicago. The company was formed in the year of this pamphlet's publication by Charles E. Stanley a well-respected thirteen- year veteran of Pinkerton's. The text contains information on the services the agency could provide; brief vignettes of several famous cases involving Stanley himself including murder confidence scams western train robbery and a child abduction case among others; and a list of legal and law enforcement personnel associated with the agency in Chicago Ohio Pennsylvania West Virginia Connecticut Indiana Michigan Minnesota Wisconsin Kansas Iowa and Colorado. The front wrapper reads "CALL IN A DETECTIVE" and the rear wrapper bears an ad for Stanley's Detective Agency with contact information.
