19153536Various locations 1915. Very good. 288 original sepia toned photographs measuring 1.5 x 1.5 to 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Oblong large octavo album; photos affixed directly to album leaves with manuscript captions in pencil. Occasional minor wear. An expansive photo album kept between the early 1900s and the 1920s of various trips in California Alaska and Mexico both touristic and military many were taken by a sailor probably from Napa California while cruising on the U.S.S. Saturn. Many of the photos not taken on shipboard show groups of people posing around 1920s model cars and their homes in Napa. The family is featured on beaches throughout California and various other locations in Napa including Napa State Hospital. One member of the family was involved with shipbuilding and was part of the crew and maintenance of multiple vessels including the U.S. S. Milwaukee and the U.S.S. Saturn. The latter was deployed to Mexico as a means of protecting the United States while Mexico was in the midst of its civil war. There are numerous photos throughout the album of the mission including Mexican generals towns and onboard activities of the crew. The Saturn was later sent to Alaska as communications support providing radio service to keep Alaska in touch with bases in the continental United States. These photos include the working of the radio station along with exterior shots of the building a photo of a band playing on board dubbed the Saturn's "orchestra" and a silly photo of men falling from a rail car which reads "end of a joyride." The Saturn also made stops in Honolulu seen here with shots of palm trees and beaches as well as a trip through the Panama Canal. unknown
19254849Various locations in the American Southwest West Coast and Pacific Northwest 1925. Very good. 30 leaves illustrated with 270 photographs of various sizes including two multi-panel panoramic photographs each leaf with a single printed caption identifying the subjects or location. Contemporary red leather gilt titles on front cover. Oblong folio. Some scuffing and abrading to covers a few short edge tears. Internally clean. A handsome annotated photograph album produced to commemorate a railroad trip by a well-to-do party of travelers from Kansas City through New Mexico Arizona Colorado California and up the West Coast to British Columbia and Alberta in 1925. The first photograph in the album is a panorama of a large group of well-dressed men and women at the Mission Hills Country Club in Kansas City captioned in the negative indicating the traveling party emanated from Kansas City as part of the "N.E.L.A. Red Special Delegation to San Francisco Convention" who were "Guests of K.C.P and L Co" presumably the Kansas City Power & Light Company. The second and much larger panoramic photograph is comprised of fifteen 5-x-8-inch photographs picturing the travelers posed outside the numerous Pullman cars that comprise the Red Special. The preponderance of the photographs are organized by location generally five or six photographs per page with a single printed caption per page mostly indicating the location. The body of photographs begins with facing pages of images featuring the travelers and some scenery in Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods in Colorado. A sampling of subsequent groups of photographs feature the travelers at Pike's Peak Albuquerque the Grand Canyon San Bernardino Redlands Los Angeles Santa Barbara Del Monte Yosemite Valley Glacier Point Mariposa Grove San Francisco Shasta the Columbia River Victoria Vancouver Canadian Rockies Lake Louise Lake Agnes Moraine Lake Johnson's Canyon Banff and other locations. The album closes with four pages of photos picturing "Fellow Travelers Here and There" and a group photo of "The Train Crew." The latter photograph is the only one featuring African Americans who were likely working as Pullman porters on the Red Special. A wide-ranging series of photographs featuring much of the American and Canadian West before the Great Depression. unknown

192072185N.p.: N.p. ca. 1920. Original album containing 44 photographs from late 19th century to early 20th century featuring members of the Cameron family including Hubert G. or Herbert G. Todd and Albert the compiler of this album. Photos trace the Cameron's family's life from Kansas to New Mexico then to El Paso and elsewhere in the West. Notably includes ca 1870s-1880s cartes-de-visite of family members with sewn borders the highlight being a 1.25 x 2 in. portrait identified as "Judge Cameron" with a Williams & Thomson Kansas City KS backmark.Herbert left home and went west first "punching" cows and breaking horses. His first wife was "Blanch Blanche Duncan." She was Todd Cameron's mother and died young at the age of 27. Herbert's second wife was Trinidad born in Mexico in 1896. She gave birth to Albert. She died in El Paso TX of tuberculosis. Many of the photos are Todd and Albert engaged in various activities. Todd later died in WWI. Other photos are of Herbert who worked in the northwest in mines the sawmills he ran a gas station in New Mexico and was a farmer in Bastrup County TX. In 1930 the census lists his occupation as "watchman" so he appears to have picked up whatever jobs he could to support his family. The annotations on the photos also indicate that Herbert lost his right hand in an accident with mining machinery so his prospects may have been limited.Family history holds that this family was related to Hugh Cameron who became known as the "Kansas Hermit." Since Hugh does not seem to have ever married it may well be one of his brothers. According to various biographies he was the third of six boys and two girls born to Allen and Catherine Frazier Cameron in New York state. Allen was born in Scotland but it is unclear whether Catherine was also or whether she was born in New York. We have been unable to locate the information on all of the siblings but the idea that one or more of them followed Hugh to Kansas is almost a certainty. We have also been unable to find a first name on "Judge Cameron" pictured in the album - presumably one of Hugh's brothers.Hugh Cameron 1826-1908 "The Kansas Hermit" was an abolitionist Civil War officer judge and founder and resident of Lawrence KS known for his eccentric behavior. Originally from upstate New York he was teaching math in Washington DC when he was fired for espousing his "radical" anti-slavery views so he decided to walk to Kansas to settle and have his voice and vote heard during the Border War period of the 1850s. Connections from Washington secured him an appointment as a territorial judge and he used his power to counteract the "Ruffians" promoting slavery in the state. When the Civil War broke out Cameron enlisted and received a commission as a first lieutenant in Co. F 2nd Kansas Cavalry and was promoted to captain by the end of the year. He was made lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry Union in February 1864 eventually being promoted to brevet brigadier general for meritorious service. After the war Cameron's eccentricities began to emerge. Despite his status as a former judge and military hero with connections in the federal government he began living in a hollowed out tree in Lawrence and eschewed the social norms of the time. One report holds that this was the result of being "spurned by Mary Phelps a Missouri woman." Lawrence Journal-World May 27 2001. The Kansas Hermit usually emerged for some spectacular purpose such as walking to Santa Fe NM to deliver a letter of apology to the people of the state for Kansas Sen. Edmund Ross casting the vote which prevented President Andrew Johnson from being convicted at his impeachment trial. He later said that the purpose of "burying himself in the woods" was to emulate the life of the prophets in the hope that he would receive "visions." N.p. unknown

1954List516California and Oregon 1954. Oblong 8vo dyed calf album measuring 11 x 7 inches. Contains 218 photographs most measuring 3 x 5 with some smaller. Very Good. A charming album depicting the canine-centric adventures of a couple as they fish hike and camp their way through some of the great Western parks nearly always with a German Shepherd in tow. Several iconic landmarks are on display - El Capitan the Columbia River giant redwoods and more. The photographer had a keen eye for landscapes and the overall quality of the images and the omnipresent dogs present an infectious appreciation of nature and the outdoors.

The size of the fish on display and the beauty of the surroundings show the bounty of the Western parks in the early days of automobile-era tourism. Mixed in with the shots of the outdoors is a curious series of a German shepherd in various poses at a table and several pictures of the couple at home. Presumably several dogs are shown all German Shepherds as the album spans several decades. Contents are beautifully preserved album torn at seams at the exterior and spine perished good to very good condition overall. unknown

98119401Japan 1875. A small folding album 8 x 17 cm. original blue covers 18p. accordion folded soiled covers verso blank but evidence of a Japanese practicing his attempt at writing in English alphabet128 color woodcut illustrations. A very charming early attempt to teach the Japanese English alphabetical letters and numerals. Folded and reading from traditional left to right this work shows the Japanese the familiar "IROHA" alphabet in both Katakana & Romanized alph- abetical letters Romaji with Hiragana above. The most fa- scinating part are the profuse color woodblock illustrations of familiar Japanese objects each with Romanized letters & the appropriate Japanese. Such cute things as Inu Roonin Hato Niwatori Potsukkuri Pokkuri Hyotan Tonbo Ringo Dobin Soroban Taiko DaikonYoroi Wakizashi Kani Katsuo and a plethora of others. This work basically was used to train the Japanese to read Romaji first for familiar objects and thus begin the process of learning English ultimately to read English letters. Works of this subject are now quite RARE and seldom come to market many were basically used up in the learning process. This example well used cover soil bit thumbed but remarkably complete. Back cover has the Sumi penned date: Meiji 7 nen with a later cover title slip pasted on and Sumi ink title written. Brief commentary on the English language some text worn away balance complete. unknown
