Batterà poi per diversi anni gli Stati Uniti con gli amici André Franquin e Joseph Gillain, frequentando i futuri eroi della rivista satirica Mad, quali Kurtzman, Davis e Wood. In patria, nel frattempo, "Lucky Luke" diviene una colonna della "bande dessinée" grazie al tratto sintetico, espressivo ed efficacissimo del suo creatore. La sua predilezione per le definizioni gli ispirerà altresì le espressioni "l'uomo che spara più veloce della sua ombra" o "nona arte".
