Il protagonista, uno scrittore terrorizzato dal fallimento, riesce finalmente a scrivere il romanzo che ha sempre sognato, ambientato in una cittadina di frontiera nell'Ottocento. E il suo vecchio professore di scrittura creativa commenta così il risultato raggiunto: «Trovo che sia molto buono. Non all'altezza di Alba fatale, forse...» Pubblicato nel 1940 e portato sul grande schermo da William Wellman, con un cast di grande livello guidato da Henry Fonda, "Alba fatale" si svolge in una cittadina del selvaggio West alla fine dell'Ottocento, e offre un ritratto crudo e realistico della vita di frontiera e della violenza che ne scandisce i ritmi quotidiani. Incentrato sul linciaggio di tre uomini accusati ingiustamente di un furto di bestiame e di un omicidio, e sulla tragedia che si scatena quando la legge e l'ordine sociale vengono calpestati, il romanzo di Clark elabora la mitologia western trasformandola in una storia universale sul bene e il male, sul rapporto tra individuo e comunità, tra giustizia e natura umana.
