/// ENGLISH: Sanjian Shuwu (三閒書屋) - Yinyu ji (引玉集, “Collection to Draw Forth Jade”): Fifty-Nine Woodcuts (木刻五十九幅) - Second printing, April 1935 - Octavo (19.5 × 15.5 cm), publisher's boards with black spine and mounted title label on upper cover - 68 pages - 59 collotype (珂羅版) reproductions of Soviet woodcuts printed from original impressions supplied by the artists - Includes a text by Chen Jie (陳節), an abridged translation of an essay by A. ABOUT: Rare anthology devoted to modern Soviet wood engraving and printmaking, published in Shanghai by Sanjian Shuwu and distributed through Uchiyama Bookstore (內山書店). The volume gathers fifty-nine collotype reproductions of woodcuts by several leading figures of the Russian and Soviet printmaking revival of the 1920s and 1930s, including Vladimir Favorsky, Dmitri Mitrokhin, Alexei Kravchenko and Pavel Pavlinov. Accompanied by Chen Jie's abridged translation of an essay by Soviet art historian A. D. Chegodaev, as well as a preface, plate catalogue and postface, the work was conceived as an introduction to contemporary Soviet printmaking for Chinese readers. A remarkable testimony to Sino-Soviet artistic exchanges in Republican-era Shanghai, it belongs to the context of the New Woodcut Movement (新興木刻運動), then flourishing under the influence of left-wing intellectual circles and cultural networks associated with Uchiyama Bookstore and the figure of Lu Xun. The reproductions were assembled from Soviet books, periodicals and documentary sources discovered in the early 1930s, notably through the journal Graphika. - Two complete, handwritten, signed manuscripts entitled "Magie quotidienne" First version with many crossing-outs and corrections, followed by the final version [with] envelope with handwritten notes 26 February 1955 | 21.1 x 27 cm and 14.5 x 11.2 cm, 2 pages on 2 leaves, 4 pages on 4 leaves and an envelope Complete handwritten, signed working manuscript entitled "Magie quotidienne", two pages written in fine handwriting in black ink on two leaves from the à l'étoile scellée gallery. Many crossing-outs and corrections. Complete signed final manuscript of the same article, four pages written in blue ink on four leaves. An envelope attached containing - in black ink - Breton's handwritten notes reused in his manuscript. Important and long manuscripts of this article which will be published in the first issue of La Tour Saint-Jacques in November 1955. "1955: with this text entitled "Magie quotidienne", Breton gives a distant echo to the beautiful phrase the "wonderful daily" which closed the first chapter of Le Paysan de Paris, in 1926. But far from Aragon passed to Stalinism, it is to the young Jean-Louis Bédouin that a text is dedicated, which may appear as one of the sketches of Breton's great project that year, a book dedicated to L'Art magique. For the time being, it is to the fascinating game of correspondence, formerly understood under the Hegelian category of objective chance, that these pages are devoted, which will appear, accompanied by a long letter from "G.D." (Georgina Dubreuil) in the first issue of La Tour Saint-Jacques, in November." (Breton Archives) This long manuscript, abundantly corrected and made up of six parts defined by dates - from 21 to 26 February 1955 -, takes the form of a diary recounting troubling coincidences encountered by the writer.
Very Good Burmese Original dark brown leather with embossing on the front board with an initial-like symbol. The black script in ink with several pencil annotations on rectangular pieces of thick hand-made mulberry paper. Closed size: 38x12,5 cm. Open size: 550x38 cm. Text in Pali, written in Burmese "round" script, richly illustrated in red, black, white, and yellow from the most influential Buddhist and astrological texts of the region. Well-preserved and in very good condition. Extremely rare example of one of the longest and a richly illustrated parabaik from Burma, "reflecting an old system of Theravardan magical beliefs pertaining to Burma / Myanmar over 100 years ago". A highly collectible item from the pre-colonial period of the Konbaung dynasty, formerly known as the Alompra dynasty, the Third Burmese Empire, the last dynasty that ruled Burma/Myanmar from 1752 to 1885, Buddhist Myanmar. With its open size, it is extremely rare in length with 44 folds; "The longest one would have 64 folds" (Harvard online). The scenes might show episodes from the Buddhist folk tales popular in Burma towards the end of the 19th century including many ancient tables and ca. 40 specific depictions of Buddha's life, Buddhist practices, some historical scenes, and religious practices like sky burial scenes, etc, as well as astrological and astronomical chapters. Folding-book manuscripts (Parabaiks in Burmese) are a type of writing material historically used in Mainland Southeast Asia, particularly in the areas of present-day Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The manuscripts are made of thick paper, usually of the Siamese rough bush (Khoi in Thai and Lao) tree or the paper mulberry, glued into a very long sheet and folded in a concertina fashion, with the front and back lacquered to form protective covers or attached to decorative wood covers. The unbound books are made in either white or black varieties, with the paper being undyed in the former and blackened with soot or lacquer in the latter. Along with paper made from bamboo and palm leaves, parabaik were the main medium for writing and drawing in early modern Burma/Myanmar.

1864981Havana: Viuda de Barcina y Comp 1864. Good. Twenty-three issues each approximately 32pp. No. 11 with folding chart lacks pp.25-32. No. 13 lacking last few leaves. With title page and half title at start of each volume. Original quarter calf and boards spine gilt. Spine ends chipped and worn some crude glue residue; hinges solid. Boards heavily worn. Light toning and wear to text light scattered worming throughout. A rare run of the first two years of the first Cuban pharmacological magazine and one of the island's earliest medical periodicals. La Emulacion was published from 1863 through 1867 with the present sammelband containing all issues published in 1863 and 1864 a total of twenty-three issues. The resulting publication contains numerous original articles by Cuban pharmacists doctors and scientists as well as important work published outside of Cuba. Additionally the issues include biographies of significant figures in the field accounts of local scientific societies including the Real Academica de Ciencias de la Habana and publication of new pharmacological formulas discovered in Cuba or "adapted for the needs of the country." As a result the periodical forms an important record of medical and pharmacological developments and thought on the island in the mid-19th century. We locate only one run of this pioneering periodical at the National Library of Cuba with only the present set of issues appearing in auction records. Bound between Volumes I and II is a pamphlet by Fernando Paez "Manual de farmacia practica" Havana 1864 possibly incomplete at 8 pages; no examples of this pamphlet appear in OCLC. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary quarter leather bdg. Handsomely bound. Six raised bands to spine, the second compartment has the title, the fifth has "issue 1-104", and the sixth has ex-owner's name of the volume, "Semseddin" lettered gilt. Original end-papers of the period. Slightly age-toned on the lower pages, fading on extremities of boards, overall a very good volume. Folio. (41 x 29 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters) and Turkish with Latin letters. This folio volume consists of 104 issues of the periodical, each issue has 4 pages, which has mostly color illustrated covers as well as several b/w ones. A rare togetherness of the first 104 issues of this Turkish satirical magazine, richly illustrated with thousands of attractive illustrations and caricatures, was published in Istanbul twice a week every Wednesday and Saturday with at least four, at most eight pages, during the Letter Revolution 1928, when the transition from the Arabic alphabet to new Latin letters was ensured. The collection provides an invaluable resource, reflecting the changes in society during and after the Letter Revolution in New Turkey, 1928, placing the new Latin alphabet instead of old Arabic letters and contributing to the development of reading and writing skills of the new Turkish society, as well as "creating the basis for the rapid social evolution in the young Turkish Republic Revolution" soon after the proclamation of the Republic in 1923. The newspaper had a printing house with the same name headquartered in Bab-i Ali (The Sublime Porte of Constantinople), the place where the heart of the Ottoman press was. Burhan Cahid Morkaya left Karagöz Newspaper and founded Köroglu Newspaper in 1928 and wanted the people living in Istanbul and Anatolia to be able to read and write new letters. Indeed, during the period of its publication, Köroglu Newspaper reached the most remote corners of the New Turkish Republic with its attractive cartoons covering local and mostly international subjects. In addition to this news and cartoons, Morkaya also published Turkish reading passages with Arabic letters that were transcripted into Latin letters. Therefore, he created a great positive effect that facilitated the transition to new letters during the Turkish Alphabet Revolution. Duman 1155.
