Composed in about the year 725, the Liber Questionum in Euangeliis (LQE) is a comprehensive reference commentary on Matthew intended for ecclesiastics in the writing, teaching, and preaching professions. Its anonymous Irish redactor gathered together all the relevant patristic and native material available, adding to and adapting much of a still largely unpublished commentary on Matthew by the Hiberno-Latin writer Frigulus (fl. ca. 700). LQE's well-attested manuscript tradition and its far-flung exegetical influence make it one of the more intriguing texts to appear in the Scriptores Celtigenae series. Although LQE's origins are in Ireland (and one Irish fragment still survives), its manuscript families also include witnesses from England and the Continent. Not only is LQE a typical product of the early Irish church, but its considerable length, the variety of its sources, and its influence on later writers further reveal the work to be central to the entire early medieval Gospel commentary tradition. In addition to exegetes in England, the Carolingian writers Haimo of Auxerre (ob. 853), Rhabanus Maurus of Fulda (780-865), and especially Paschasius Radbertus of Corbie (ob. ca. 865) adapted it for their own works on Matthew. Rittmueller's painstakingly researched edition and introduction will serve as an invaluable resource in early medieval Biblical studies for decades to come. Languages: Latin.

Jan Luyken (also called Johannes Luiken / Luycken / or Luykens) was an Amsterdam born artist, engraver, and poet. He was a very important and versatile etcher in the period after Rembrandt. He was baptized in the Lamist Mennonite Church in 1673, and by 1675 he fell under the sway of the mystical fire surrounding the followers of Jacob Boehme. Closely attached to a few kindred spirits (including his son, Caspar), he lived in seclusion and worked on his etchings and poems. His artistry is distinguished by its clarity, detail, and power. This is among the most famous of his works. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! NW16 RtStk

Hendrik Boxhorn (sometimes he used Boxhoren, Bocherinc and related forms) was born about 1544 in Brussels and died in 1631 in Leyden. Born a Roman Catholic, he converted to Protestantism and became a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church (first in the Duchy of Cleves, then in Woorden, and lastly in Breda). He engaged in bitter and prolonged controversy and pamphlet wars with various Catholic polemicists. De Vrindt was an apothecary / pharmacist in Brussels. This work is sometimes ascribed to Pater Gouda (Fr. Johannes de Gouda) [1571-1630]. In the title, Worm-Cruyt means something like pesticide (against the preachings of Boxhorn). The text begins with a poem; and then become mostly a dialogue / argument between citizens of various cities of the Pays Bas (Holland and Belgium). VERY RARE. Four important Byzantine historians have left narrative texts about the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, the gradual disintegration of the Byzantine Empire and the capture of Constantinople by Sultan Me?emmed II Fati? (1444-1481) in 1453 : Critoboulos from Imbros, Laonicos Chalcocondyles, Georgios Phrantzes and Dukas. This new Thesaurus, the twenty-fourth of the collection, is devoted to the analysis of the lexicon of the latter. The Historia Turcobyzantina by Dukas, described by B. Flusin as ?«a parallel history of the Palaiologoi and the Ottomans, until the disappearance, already accomplished, of the former and the announced end of the latter?» is a text often used by modern historians, but it is not yet studied enough for itself. Dukas uses a mixed Greek language : the author is a scholar, but not a purist, and his lexicon contains many loanwords from languages spoken by peoples living in the Mediterranean world during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The thesaurus follows the edition of V. Grecu wich was published in 1958. The concordance and the lexicographical tools developed for this collection are accompanied by an index of loanwords coming from Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin and Romance languages. The authors received the kind assistance of Professor Sophia Kotzabassi who is preparing a new edition of Dukas expected to be published in the Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae. As the title suggests, this volume also explores the lexicon of three other texts, minor works which are not long enough to create a thesaurus, if they are studied individually : i) an anonymous account of the siege of Constantinople by B?yaz?d I between 1394-1402, edited by P. Gautier in 1965 (= BHG 1063z) ; ii) a narratio of the siege of Constantinople led by Sultan Mur?d II in 1422 written by Jean Cananos, published by E. Pinto in 1977 (BHG 1064) ; iii) the didascalia of Dorothy, Archbishop of Mitylene, addressed to the inhabitants of Constantinople during this attack and published by Chr. Loparev in 1906. During a diocesan synod held in 1383, the Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (1340-1384) delivered a sermon in which he vigorously attacked priests living together with concubines in the Diocese of Utrecht, whom he called focarists. After he had delivered his sermon, Grote worked it out into a written treatise comprising 26 dicta or chapters in more than 3500 lines. Grote advocated a rigorous viewpoint. Thus, he pointed out in dictum 2 that anyone who attends the offices of a notorious focarist, commits a mortal sin. His strict position met with considerable opposition. This led to various minor works either summarizing the long sermon or elucidating particular points. In the end, Grote?s opponents succeeded in their efforts to bring about his downfall. In the present volume the major documents in the focarists? dossier are edited scientifically for the first time, replacing the earlier 1830?s edition. The volume also presents an editio princeps of a Middle Dutch partial translation as well as of a recently discovered fragment elaborating on the contents of dictum 2. In unfolding his diatribe, Grote relies on a great number of authorities and predecessors. A detailed analysis of this wealth of material has resulted in a highly innovative assessment of Grote?s use of sources, included among the introductory matter. Languages: Latin.

Hardback, XX+620 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503532554. Volume 192 of the CC CM series is devoted to Geert Grote or Gerardus Magnus, the founder of the Deuotio Moderna, a religious reform movement which was widely influential in the Low Countries and beyond towards the end of the Middle Ages and fairly long after that. The volume, Vol. 1 of the subseries Gerardi Magni Opera omnia, opens with a general introduction to the life and works of Grote. This section is followed by a survey and analysis of all extant manuscripts containing works of Grote and by a critical evaluation arranged in the order of Grote?s works, in addition providing information on manuscripts transmitting the individual works and earlier editions. After this Part 1, which is more general in nature, follows Part 2, the critical edition of Grote?s little treatise Contra turrim Traiectensem, a venomous invective in which Grote tries to prevent further building activities having as their aim to enlarge the Dom tower in Utrecht, the tower of the cathedral church of the Dutch diocese. This edition presents a comprehensive view of the oldest gloss tradition on books I-II of Martianus Capella?s De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, a key text for Carolingian scholars. It furnishes descriptions of all extant manuscripts transmitting these glosses and outlines their stemmatic relationship. The relevant centres of glossing activity are indicated. The glosses are accompanied by an apparatus of variants both to text and gloss as well as by a source apparatus and traditio textus to the glosses. The edition of glosses is organized by lemma and in categories according to the nature of the content. Additions of second and third hands are noted. The comprehensiveness made possible by thorough examination of all extant manuscripts brings into focus the layering of annotations over time, the close cooperation between scribes, the presence of a ?core? corpus of annotations and the range and variety of material across the tradition. More generally, the glosses provide insight into how Martianus was read and understood in the ninth and tenth centuries. Martianus? rich blend of astral religion, classical mythology and pagan tradition had an enormous impact on Carolingian commentators. The earliest tradition of glossing on De nuptiis thus supplements our knowledge of how pagan culture was received in the early medieval West, raising important questions about the nature of this reception.
