The principal literary achievement of Peter of Callinicus, patriarch of Antioch from 581 to 591 is the rebuttal, directed against his co-religionist Damian, pope of Alexandria from 557/8 till 606/7. It has waited a long time for publication in a modern edition: the work survived not in its Greek original, but in Syriac translation, the theme is technical and complicated and its author belongs to a period and to a communion unfamiliar to most students of Christian life and thought in the patristic era. Il s'agit ici du troisieme tome (apres CCSG 29 et 32) des quatre prevus, qui doivent nous restituer tout ce qu'on a garde - en version syriaque seulement - de l'oeuvre monumentale de Pierre de Callinique, son Traite contre Damien, patriarche d'Alexandrie. Il va sans dire que le texte syriaque est accompagne d'une version anglaise vis-a-vis. L'ecrit, primitivement redige en grec, date de 590-592. Pierre s'en prend a Damien, qui ne distinguait pas suffisamment les trois personnes de la Trinite, et, pour le refuter, il utilise abondamment les ecrits ecclesiastiques anterieurs. Il cite d'abord, litteralement et in extenso, les lettres et oeuvres de Damien auxquelles il s'attaque; comme celles-ci sont perdues, c'est notre meilleur acces a la pensee du patriarche d'Alexandrie. A cote de citations connues par ailleurs et transmises sous les noms d'Athanase, Basile, Cyrille d'Alexandrie, Gregoire de Nazianze, Gregoire de Nysse et Severe d'Antioche, ce troisieme tome a conserve egalement des fragments, inconnus jusqu'ici, de Cyrille d'Alexandrie (du livre VIII du Commentaire sur Jean), de Gregoire de Nysse (une bonne dizaine de lignes du premier livre Contre Eunome) et de Pierre IV d'Alexandrie. On y lit egalement 7 passages nouveaux de Severe d'Antioche et quelques extraits d'oeuvres anterieures - perdues - de Pierre de Callinique lui-meme, passages que celui-ci reprend dans son argumentation. Pour le reste, le troisieme tome ne differe guere des deux premiers. La methode de refutation est toujours la meme: le texte de Damien une fois cite, Pierre lui en oppose d'autres, venant d'autorites incontestees, puis il analyse longuement ces derniers pour montrer qu'ils sont incompatibles avec la pensee du patriarche d'Alexandrie. It has been transmitted in two redactions: Etym. Sym. proper, and Magna Grammatica. The latter is a version of the Etym. Symeonis that has been enlarged, around the middle of the thirteenth century, on the basis of the Etymologicum Magnum. Each redaction is preserved in two manuscripts. This edition of letters is based upon a meticulous collation of the four manuscripts and also on a study of the primary sources used by the compiler of this dictionary (the unpublished Etym. The Ars demonstrativa was the second version of the Lullian Ars, and revised and completed the Ars compendiosa inveniendi veritatem (1274). It was composed in Montpellier in 1283. The work is accompanied by Figures and an Alphabet; the former are graphic symbols which make the structural components of the Ars visible and facilitate the operation of the combinatorial mechanisms and the calculations. As regards the Alphabet, the letters A S T V X Y and Z represent the Figures mentioned above, while the others - namely those between B and R - serve to designate the concepts contained within Figure S, the figure pertaining to the rational soul. The Ars demonstrativa has four parts or 'distinctions'of which the final part is a list of questions relating to the preceding parts, accompanied by their corresponding solutions in symbolic notation. The first distinction gives a detailed description of the figures. The second distinction expounds the 'conditions' of the Ars, the mechanisms which enable the reader to obtain information on the basis of the principles from Figures A V X, with a view to discovering the truth or falsity - Figures Y Z - by using Figures T and S, which establish relationships between the principles. The third distinction offers sixteen modes, or rather, applications for the mechanisms of the Ars, which are: remembering, understanding, loving, believing, contemplating, finding, ordering, preaching, expounding, resolving, judging, showing, disputing, advising, accustoming, curing.
