L'Histoire ecclesiastique de la nation anglaise ou les homelies ont une tradition manuscrite bien plus abondante. Meme parmi ses ecrits exegetiques, le commentaire sur les Actes, reste longtemps sans concurrent, a connu une diffusion nettement plus large. Le commentaire sur l'Apocalypse avait des predecesseurs de toutes dimensions, propres a satisfaire les gouts les plus varies; certains etaient couverts par l'autorite prestigieuse de Jerome ou d'Augustin. Il a eu aussi tres tot des successeurs: Ambroise Autpert, Beatus de Liebana, Haymon d'Auxerre. Il est d'autant plus remarquable que sa tradition manuscrite soit de loin la plus fournie de tous les commentaires precarolingiens de l'Apocalypse. Il doit sans doute en partie sa fortune au fait qu'il recueillait le meilleur de la tradition anterieure dans un ouvrage de dimension bien etudiee, a mi-chemin entre l'extreme brievete de Cassiodore ou du Pseudo-Jerome, qui laisse souvent le lecteur sur sa faim, et la prolixite parfois indigeste d'Ambroise ou de Beatus. L'edition se fonde, pour l'essentiel, sur un choix de vingt-trois manuscrits echelonnes du 9e au 11e s., representant les differentes branches de la tradition. L'etablissement du texte, d'une facon generale, ne fait pas probleme, puisqu'on dispose d'au moins quatre voies d'acces independantes a l'archetype primaire, dont la teneur peut etre ainsi reconstituee avec une grande surete, jusque dans le detail de ses particularites orthographiques, que l'on a scrupuleusement respectees.
