199734821Manchester University Press. 1997. Softcover. Very Good. A bit of foxing to textblock. Minor shelfwear.; The story of the conversion of the English to Christianity traditionally begins with Augustine's arrival in 597. This text offers a critical re-evaluation of the process of conversion which assesses what the act really meant to new converts who was responsible for it and why particular figures both accepted conversion for themselves and threw their influence behind the spread of Christianity. The conversion has often been seen as something which missionaries did to the English. The book restores responsibility to the English and in particular King Aethelbert Edwin Oswald and Oswin and it is their religious policies that form the focus of this text.; 8.4 X 5.4 X 0.9 inches; 304 pages . 0719048281 . Small knock to middle of foreedge of front board else Fine.; 220 pages; John Lydus a retired official at Justinian's court in the mid-6th century is an important neglected source for the study of the fate of the classical legacy in the newly Christianized Roman empire Byzantium.
Examining his work On Portents On the Months and On Magistracies Michael Maas establishes Lydus as a credible witness to the political and cultural milieu in the age of Justinian--at the moment when the state re-historicized itself and its Roman legacy in Christian terms. Within a few generations addressing antiquity from a non-Christian viewpoint would have been unthinkable. From his place on the edge of this shifting paradigm Lydus' writings help us to see the emergence of medieval Byzantium through Roman eyes. . 0415060214 . Routledge hardcover

2000640Princeton University Press. 2000. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Bottom corners are lightly bumped otherwise Fine condition.; This is an unprecedented collection of nearly seventy Late Antique primary religious texts. These texts--all in new English translation and many appearing in English for the first time--represent every major religious current from the late first century until the rise of Islam. Produced through the efforts of thirty-six leading scholars in the field they constitute a comprehensive view of religious practice in Late Antiquity. Religious life and performance during this period comprised diverse often unusual practices. Philosophical ascent magic legal pronouncement hymnography dietary and sexual restriction and rhetoric were all part of this deeply fascinating world. Religious and political identity often intertwined as reflected in the Roman persecution of Christians. And a fluid boundary between religion and superstition was contested in daily life. Many practices including ascetic training crossed religious boundaries. Others such as "incubation" at specific temples and certain divination rites were distinctive practices of individual groups and orders. Intrinsically interesting the practice of religion in the Late Antique also edifies modern-day religious life. As this volume shows the origins of the contemporary Western religious terrain can be gleaned in this period. Rabbinic Judaism flourished and spread. Christianity developed still-important theological categories and structures. And even movements that did not survive intact--such as Neoplatonism and the once-powerful Manichaean churches--continue to influence religion today. This rich sourcebook includes discussions of asceticism religious organization ritual martyrdom religion's social implications law and theology. Its unique emphasis on practice and its inclusion of texts translated from lesser-known languages advance the study of religious history in several directions. A strong interdisciplinary orientation will reward scholars and students of religion theology gender studies classical literatures and history. Each text is accompanied by an introduction and a bibliography for further reading and research making the book appropriate for use in any university or seminary classroom.; 1.32 x 9.56 x 6.54 Inches; 527 pages . 0691057508 .
