Later Victorian binding of black morocco with plain dark green pebbled-cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine. Head/tail of the spine chipped otherwise very good. Contents remarkably good clean and tight with a little light pencil highlighting and ticks to margins. All printed marginal notes present and untrimmed with the exception of the final two leaves where a couple of marginal notes are mimimally cropped; last leaf with very small 4 x 3 mm chip to fore-edge very light staining to title page. A very good copy. A reply by the Deven and Cornwall Ministers to Thomas Hutton's "Reasons for Refusal of Subscription to the booke of Common Praier." Oxford 1605. While this book appears in a number of major libraries we have been unable to find any auction records or any catalogue records. Handwritten note to ffep in near contemporary hand noting "Rev'd Marshall D. Smith Passaic New Jersey. Very rare and therefore to be carefully used and returned to the owner." Small thumbnail sized chip at bottom outer margin of title page with no loss of text. Some light soiling to first half of the text but pages otherwise clean and free from marking soiling or staining. Top edge brightly gilt. Other edges uncut. Bound in early 20th Century polished calf by Pratt with gilt panels of triple gilt-ruled borders and gilt acorn decorations in corners. Original spine with six gilt decorated compartments and two black morocco spine labels relaid. Extremities lightly rubbed. Griffiths 1789/8. A spectacular and uncut copy of the rarest Anglican/Episcopal Prayer Book. The Protestant Episcopal Church was founded at a convention at Philadelphia in 1785. After the American Revolution a new American Prayer Book was proposed and printed in an edition of 4000 copies by a Philadelphia printer. This edition was printed in a very limited number for the use of the bishops in England. Only fifty 50 copies were printed. "A rarer book connected with American church history can hardly be named." The original binding has a later but still apparently 19th century leather covering laid over with a square cut out on the spine for the original leather title label to show. The binding is rubbed and bumped but sound. An ex-library copy with remains of bookplates on the front pastedown one has a handwritten date of 1828. There is a tear in the gutter of the title page and the first leaf of the Table of Contents has a large portion torn away with significant loss of text. Browning around the edges of the title page and the text of the book is toned with some foxing. A few pages have edge tears. Text of the main body of the work is complete. <br/> <br/> Printed by W.
