199734821Manchester University Press. 1997. Softcover. Very Good. A bit of foxing to textblock. Minor shelfwear.; The story of the conversion of the English to Christianity traditionally begins with Augustine's arrival in 597. This text offers a critical re-evaluation of the process of conversion which assesses what the act really meant to new converts who was responsible for it and why particular figures both accepted conversion for themselves and threw their influence behind the spread of Christianity. The conversion has often been seen as something which missionaries did to the English. The book restores responsibility to the English and in particular King Aethelbert Edwin Oswald and Oswin and it is their religious policies that form the focus of this text.; 8.4 X 5.4 X 0.9 inches; 304 pages . 0719048281 . ISBN: 978-960-7070-73-9.

A view of the Eastern Orthodox monasticism from many different angles. Monasticism is described as the life of the Gospel its aim being to fulfill Christ's commandments as completely as possible. Drawing on Holy Scripture the writings of the Fathers and contemporary elders the book informs us about the role and mission of Orthodox monasticism its relevance to today's world but also its secularisation in our time. A fascinating selection of talks given at professions of individual monks and nuns gives insight into what leads someone to embrace this way of life and how they can retain their inspiration. The book then looks at monasticism on two holy mountains – Mount Athos and Mount Sinai – mostly through talks and analyses of books including the letters of Elder Joseph the Hesychast the Ladder of St John Climacus and St Gregory of Nyssa's Life of Moses. Other sections consider the mystery of the cross in the monastic life drawing on St Basil the Great and Archimandrite Sophrony of Essex. The culmination of the book is a chapter interpreting the Service of the Great and Angelic Schema – a rare opportunity to read extracts in English from this beautiful and awe-inspiring service together with an explanation of their purpose.

.

.

.

IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. 2000157183
In English. Soft cover 22 cm 400 pp. ISBN: 960-7070-37-2.

Presents the life work and teaching of St. Gregory Palamas as they relate to his identity as a monk of the Holy Mountain. In the consciousness of the Church as a whole St. Gregory Palamas Archbishop of Thessaloniki is not just a great Father of the Church and an Ecumenical Teacher but belongs to the company of the Three Hierarchs and the three great Theologians of the Church as "The Fourth Hierarch and Theologian". Drawing on information provided by St. Philotheos St. Gregory's biographer the author describes the Saint’s life from childhood before he moved to the Holy Mountain. Subsequently we see the Saint as monk priest Abbott and Metropolitan and it is stressed that he was a true Hagiorite not only because he stayed on the Holy Mountain but because he lived the life of the Holy Mountain. We learn about the Saint’s gifts and virtues but also his temptations which he regarded as a special blessing from God. The Saint's teaching is an expression of the life which he encountered on the Holy Mountain that is to say the hesychastic way of life which is the essence of the Orthodox tradition. The core of the Saint's teaching can be found in his dispute with the speculative philosopher Barlaam. He overturned Barlaam’s erroneous views and laid down the theological conditions for noetic prayer. He demonstrated that noetic prayer is found in the tradition of the Church and is not just the prerogative of monks but can be practised by all Christians. By setting out in theological terms the value of fasting vigil tears and compunction and also analysing the importance of the senses during the practice of noetic prayer he teaches us that the body cannot be overlooked in man’s effort to be purified. In fact he explains that the grace of God acts in the soul and from there is carried over into the body as well.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. 2011148889
Cloth 21 cm 396 pp. Translated into English by Elizabeth Thekritoff. ISBN: 987-960-89067-9-2.

The Divine Liturgy was first published in Greece in 1982 by the theological journal 'Synaxi' since when it has been continuously in print and there have been four new editions. From 1993 it has been published by the Cell of St. John the Theologian Koutloumousiou Monastery Mount Athos. This translation into English has been made from the most recent 2006 edition. The commentary is addressed to anyone who wishes to learn about the Orthodox Divine Liturgy in an esoteric rather than scholastic manner and draws widely on the words and meditations of holy people through the ages who themselves have celebrated participated in and experienced it. // From the Foreword: 'When Christ first spoke about the Mystery of the Divine Eucharist He called Himself the "Bread of life" which came down at the moment of the Eucharistic annunciation into the virgin Church and the holy Church becomes the "good earth and blessed" which brings forth the Bread of life. It is this reality of Christ's descent and His presence within the Church that we experience in the Divine Liturgy. The Divine Liturgy is Christ in our midst. The holy Evangelists and the God-bearing Fathers spoke to us of Christ as they experienced Him when He was with them and as they experienced Him as a living reality in the Divine Liturgy: That which was from the beginning which we have heard which have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon and touched with our hands concerning the Word of life John 1 : 1. It is from the writings and eucharistic experiences of these saints who have seen the true Light who have heard the Word and "touched the immaculate head of the Master" and who are eternally contemporary that the present commentary is compiled.' // 'I highly recommend this book to any devout Christian Orthodox or not and to those interested in the worship of the Orthodox Church and to theologians of any tradition who will find in its pages a wonderful exposition of Christian worship that brings together Scripture and the Patristic tradition in a cogent compelling and inspiring manner. . . . No Orthodox library could be complete without this classic text in my humble view.' - Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna in Orthodox Tradition.

CONTENTS:

I.
