1891184661London: British and Foreign Bible Society 1891. Used on missionary service in Penang A scarce missionary imprint: an early edition of the first New Testament in the Hokkien dialect of Xiamen and southern Fujian province. This was the copy of Daniel Davies Moore among the first Methodist missionaries in Penang which had an established community of Hokkien speakers. The translation was the work of four members of the English Presbyterian Mission: William Macgregor William S. Swanson Hugh Cowie and James L. Maxwell. The first edition was printed in Scotland for private circulation in 1873 and the same plates were used to produce editions in 1880s and 1890s. Moore 1856-1946 "left Canada for Singapore in April 1891 as a foreign missionary. There he was commissioned by the newly established Methodist Church in Singapore to start work in Penang for the English-speaking community. In July 1891 he started the first English service at the Penang Town Hall. The following month the first sacramental service for eight people was conducted at the rented residence of the missionaries at Carnavon Street" Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. 200890778
Manuel Panselinos - From the Holy Church of Protaton

In Greek. Second edition. Clothbound 31x25 cm 312 pp. rich illustration. ISBN: 960-87150-1-6.

The life of Manuel Panselenos the great Byzantine painter of Protaton church at Karyes Mount Athos is between myth and reality. He lived in 14th century a time of conflict where while the state's political and economic power declines letters and arts reach the highest point of glory yet drawing elements from the ancient Greek tradition. His work as it survives in Protaton is representative of the whole Paleologean era and of the so-called Macedonian "school" of hagiography whose center was the city of Thessalonike. The intellectual and artistic life of the city reaches that time at high levels whith a leading role in the entire Balkan area. The work of Panselenos has a rare quality in the performance of color organic body composition and psychological performance forms all of which add to the style of a drama inherent in realistic tones. The serene grandeur that emits as a whole in harmony with large proportions of the architectural and figured compositions with the robust figures of people vibrate a deep human passion which invites the viewer to sympathize with the feelings they emit.

Hagioreitike Hestia hardcover
