1873113261London Oxford Cambridge: Rivingtons 1873. Octavo pp. i-v vi-viii 1 2-279 280: printer's imprint 96-page publisher's catalogue dated "August 1881" inserted at rear original decorated green cloth front and spine panels stamped in gold gray coated endpapers all edges untrimmed. First edition. "Collection of sixty-three fictional pieces all with some moral to be discerned in them though it's not always clear. Some are very short indeed including a number of animal fables while others are fully developed short stories. 'Bad Air and Water' lays the downfall of twin girls despite the generous gifts of a fairy godmother to a negligent mother who let them read . sensation novels! Some present parables. Another ruefully meditates on the unhappy fate of the man who invented the 'glossometre' which records and classifies a person's statements 'Observations on the weather 100; on the crops 50; to his own praise 100; to his neighbor's blame 200; faults found with others which are also his own 199.'. Nobody will keep it and it is turned out of every home as well as a pulpit. The collection presents a study in a cluster of related literary styles that are largely out of favor today but which have been historically important and which have shaped the work of such authors as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Franz Kafka." - Robert Eldridge. Allibone Supplement p. 816. Cloth rubbed and lightly worn at spine ends corner tips and along outer hinges a very good copy. #113261 Rivingtons unknown books

1842SET29-I-1London : The Camden Society 1842-1856. Leather. Good. 7" by 9". None. A set of four seperate but informally bound works published by The Camden Society who were founded in 1838 in London and published early historical and literary materials both unpublished manuscripts and new editions of rare printed books. For an annual The following works are included in this collection: The Diary of Thomas Cartwright by Reverend Joseph Hunter. Three Early English Metrical Romances edited by John Robson. The Pilgrimage of Sir Richard Guilford edited by Sir Henry Ellis and finally the Diary of John Rous Edited by Mary Anne Everett Green. Thomas Cartwright c. 1535 December 1603 was an English Puritan churchman. Cartwright was a man of much culture and originality but said to be exceedingly impulsive. His views were distinctly Presbyterian and he stoutly opposed the Brownists or Independents. He never conceived of a separation between church and state and may have refused to tolerate any non-conformity with the reformed national Presbyterian church. However it is believed that the Puritanism of the day owed its systematization and much of its force to him. Sir Richard Guildford KG 1455 1506 was an English courtier who held important positions at the court of Henry VII including the office of Master of the Ordnance. He embarked at Rye on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land but the prior died there on 6 September. Guildford's chaplain prepared an account of "The Pylgrymage of Sir Richard Guylforde to the Holy Land A.D. 1506" which Richard Pynson printed in 1511. It was reprinted by Sir Henry Ellis for the Camden Society in 1851. John Rous 1710-1760 was the senior naval officer on the Nova Scotia station during Father Le Loutre's War 1749-1755. He made a significant contribution to the preservation of Halifax and the defeat of the French Acadian and Mi'kmaq resistance. As the admiralty did not provide effective naval forces for the defence of Nova Scotia Rous improvised to establish and protect the new British settlements at Halifax Lunenburg and Lawrencetown. Includes a bookplate from the personal library of one 'Ernst L. J. Benzon'. In a gilt full calf binding. Externally generally smart rubbed in places with some general wear and loss to the spines and heavier loss to the spine of one volume. The hinges to three of the volumes working loose and some marks to the boards. Internally firmly bound very bright and generally clean throughout with just the odd spot to some of the first and last pages. Ink inscriptions to the verso of the front free-endpapers for one 'A. E.
