From the George III preface onwards the condition of the text is very good/fine as is that of all the many full page engravings. The full leather binding is probably original but the front board is missing and the back boards and last few pages are detached. There are no front endpapers but the binding of all the rest of the text until the last pages is tight and robust. The title page has wear and tear with some inches of paper loss to the top edge near the spine and a little paper loss also to the middle of the outside edge. No foxing. Reverend William Gilpin 1724- 804 was an English artist Anglican cleric schoolmaster and author best known as one of the originators of the idea of the picturesque style of landscape painting. In 1768 Gilpin published his popular "Essay on Prints" where he defined the picturesque as"that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty" based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting. During the late 1760s and 1770s Gilpin traveled extensively in the summer holidays and applied these principles to the landscapes he saw committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks. This particular watercolor study features the High Force waterfall at the River Tees in Durham England with two figures in the foreground surrounded by lush landscape. Gilpin brought attention to the area with his sketching journals influencing tourism and commenting on the sublime and beauty of nature. Bright and unmarred original painting. No visible wear. Single leaf color wash and ink with sepia tones mounted on board includes monograph embossed on right corner 10.25x7.5 unknown

1770003619Original autograph note. GRANGER Reverend James 1723-1776. Autograph note addressed to James Brindley concerning William Meredith. Circa 1770. Single leaf written on one side in ink. Later mounted at the lower edge by a nineteenth-century collector with contemporary bibliographical slips relating to Granger's works affixed below. Light overall toning edge wear and a small area of staining; legible. About good. James Granger was Vicar of Shiplake and the compiler of A Biographical History of England 1769 the landmark work that gave rise to the practice of "Grangerizing" or extra-illustrating books through the insertion of portraits and documentary material. This brief autograph note is addressed to James Brindley the noted bibliophile and Commissioner of the Stamp Office and refers to William Meredith situating it firmly within the circle of eighteenth-century collectors and antiquarian scholarship. Granger's autograph material is uncommon. A small piece of English bibliographical history linking the originator of Grangerizing with one of the foremost collectors of the period. . Good. This is the first dictionary of Basque preceded only by Oihenartus' Notitia utriusque Vasconiae tum Ibericae tum Aquitanicae Paris 1638 to which was appended a Basque word list. Larramendi also compiled a Basque grammar 1729. Entry words are in Castilian with Basque and Latin equivalents. The 230-page introduction is an extensive history and grammar of the Basque language the only non-Aryan language of western Europe and a language unaffilliated with any other. Not in NUC. Not in Collison Dictionaries of Foreign Languages; Trübner's Catalogue of Dictionaries and Grammars cites only the 1853 revision. The bindings have some nicking and chipping to them. The surface area is quite pitted. Still attractive. Each volume has vignettes and historiated initials to the beginning of each homily. Each homily has its own title page and date. These were obviously printed as separate homilies and bound together here. Text in French. Vol 1. 1707 4th Edition. This volume has had damage to the bottom edge looks as if perhaps mice before binding or similar. As a result the text block has been shaved to the base not affecting text. This has resulted in the book being 2.5 cm shorter than the other two volumes. Chaque homélie a sa propre page de titre et sa propre date. Celles-ci ont évidemment été imprimées sous forme d'homélies séparées et reliées ensemble ici. Texte en français. Vol 1. 1707 4e édition. Ce volume a eu des dommages sur le bord inférieur on dirait peut-être des souris avant la reliure ou similaire . En conséquence le bloc de texte a été rasé jusqu'à la base n'affectant pas le texte. Le livre est donc plus court de 25 cm que les deux autres volumes. Contemporary limp vellum. Text block very nearly detached from the binding the connection is now dependent on a bit of sewing at the lower headband. Two short clusters of leaves with minor worm tracks. Lacks two leaves -- R2 and almost all of leaf Aa2 of which just an upper corner remains. Rare. Not in OCLC. The author Francisco de Mattos was born in 1636 in Lisbon where he entered the Jesuit order in 1652. He traveled to the Northeast of Brazil to make his noviciate in Bahia -- returned to Portugal where Padre Mattos served as Procurador-general for the S.J. Upon his return to Brazil Padre Mattos became rector of the Jesuit colleges at Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. He became Provincial Professor of the humanities philosophy and theology and died in Bahia in 1720. This rare little book seems to be a second edition of these "meditações". BLPL cites an edition of this title published in 1717 at the printing office Universidade Évora Portugal. Moraes also describes a more substantial work by Padre Francisco de Mattos -- a chronological biography of the founder of his order published the previous year with an imprint identical to our work printed by Pascoal da Sylva in Lisboa occidental. see Vida chronologica de S. Ignacio de Loyola fundador da Companhia de Jesus offerecida ao Illistrissimo Senhor Arcebispo da Bahia . This is a rare contribution to Brazilian literature in every respect save for the formal location in Lisbon of its printer.
