Gilt- and blind-stamped green stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the spine all edges uncut; cloth slightly marked and a little rubbed at the extremities with trifling wear to a spot along the rear joint; minimal signs of age and use; an excellent copy. Ferguson 18805. This copy contains a series of interesting albeit relatively unimportant early marks of ownership from William Charles Rigby's early blindstamp with premises at 55 Hindley Street to the ink signature of a policeman 'Frank Karuth Kadina S.A. 13/8/64' ruled out on the title page and the pencilled signatures of vigneron and publican Francis Robert Hunt Hahndorf twice and subsequently his son Leonard who died in 1919. The first of many significant and original contributions to Australian geology palaeontology and zoology by Father Tenison-Woods 1832-1889. These days he is perhaps more widely known for the fact that with 'Mother Mary MacKillop he helped to found the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at Penola in 1866' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Sold from an institution with its bookplate and press-marks on endpapers, and small blind stamp on titles. Woodforde's account includes Oxford and the Somerset Curacies 1758-1776 and thereafter his residence in the Norfolk village of Weston Longeville. The first three volumes comprise Vol. I: 1758-1781 (second impression, 1924); Vol. II: 1782-87 (first edition, 1926); Vol. III: 1788-92 (first edition, 1927). Previous owner's signature front endpaper. The plates are foxed: the main body of the book is clean. The book has been professionally restored with the gilt-illustrated backstrip laid down on new red cloth. Very good condition. John George Wood or Reverend J. G. Wood 1827 - 1889 was an English writer who gave up his curacy to devote himself to writing on natural history becoming a well-known parson-naturalist of the Victorian era. This is a first edition of "Our Garden Friends and Foes" in which Wood writes: "The object of this work is to furnish the reader with a guide to the various beings which can exercise any influence upon our gardens and greenhouses to enable the cultivator to distinguish between his Friends and his Foe and to give simple directions for encouraging the one and exterminating the other." The book is beautiully illustrated with over 200 engraved illustrations of garden animals birds lizards and snakes beetles butterflies and moths spiders insects etc. 1st Edition.
