Bound in contemporary embossed flexible leather approx. 256 pages 8 blank 25 lines per page approx. 225 words per page manuscript writing each page mostly unpaginated. Sermons begin with a phrase of Biblical Scripture each sermon dated with place given as Bowmanville. Signed by Slater at front end page with Bowmanville 1857-58 in ink. James C. Slater b. England 1824- was a Wesleyan Methodist Minister whose ministry began in 1847 and was active as late as 1874. He was Chairman of the Bowmanville Circuit in 1860. Very Good loss of leather at base of spine hinges starting. An historically important and RARE contribution to an understanding of Methodist Church teachings and thought in mid-nineteenth century Canada. . Hardcover

As the first pro-gay journal of its kind it serves as an important source for pre-Stonewall homophile studies. In 1954 the US Post Office declared it obscene leading to a four-year legal battle chronicled in its pages that concluded with a favorable decision as part of Roth vs. United States. Aside from its articles covering topics ranging from the Beatniks and Gay marriage to homosexuality and national security One Magazine also featured poetry and short fiction by numerous prominent authors.
