Protégé par une chemise de percaline grenat doublée de satin ivoire et un étui grenat. texte en caractères gothiques orné de lettrines en couleurs, inscrit dans un large encadrement inspiré des manuscrits enluminés médiévaux, sur fonds bleu marial, rouge rubis, doré... offrant une grande variété de scènes de la vie médiévale, animaux chimériques ou réels, fleurs, anges, volutes, végétaux tous polychromes et rehaussés de doré. l'ornementation offre, en outre, un très beau titre-frontispice vivement coloré, 1 planche en chromolithographie représentant un somptueux pendentif à 2 camées aux armoiries accolées peintes, surmontées d'une bannière où la date du 11 mars 1879 à été calligraphiée, 1 frontispice au verso du titre, enfin 12 belles miniatures. Edward Nathan Calisch (1865-1946) was a prominent American Reform Rabbi .in the second graduating class of Hebrew Union College. In 1887, Calisch accepted a pulpit in Peoria, Illinois. In 1891, he became rabbi of Congregation Beth Ahabah in Richmond, Virginia. In 1893, Calisch's congregation felt the need for a more modern prayer ritual. They authorized Calisch to revise a prayer-book. That prayer book was the first Hebrew book printed in Richmond .Calisch was a prominent figure in Richmond's civic life, where his talents as an orator were much in demand. In 1915 he gave an speech in support of women's suffrage from the steps of the state capitol. He was an executive member of the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Welfare Board, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Virginia War History Commission (Wikipedia).
