1829elala1084np: 1829. 1829. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l. 3index 4-255. modern calf covers bit discoloured. The majority of the grievances were directed at the authoritarian regime of Lord Dalhousie as governor of Lower Canada and Governor-in-Chief of British North America 1820-28 when he was recalled. Included are grievances relating to Dalhousies establishment of a new Quebec Gazette his censure of Sir Francis Burton for having sanctioned a Bill of Supply his dismissal of militia officers and exercise of intimidation during elections his dismissal of justices of the peace and the unfair manner of jury selection. "Among other things the Montreal petitioners complained that contrary to the laws of England juries both grand and petty and both King's Bench and Quarter Sessions were being drawn exclusively from the town of Montreal rather than from the district at large. The committee chaired by Denis-Benjamin Viger concluded that this practice of jurors being "selected or as it were packed - summoned exclusively from among the inhabitants of a particular place or from a particular class - cannot be more compatible with liberty than it is with the rules of impartial justice. It is repugnant to every principle of our government and can only tend to the overthrow of the constitution of the country .The executive's control over the process of selecting juries became for the Patriotes yet another symbol of despotism and of the attempted exclusion of canadiens from their democratic rights given that they predominated in the countryside; a number of highly political jury trials for libel and sedition did nothing to help matters. The controversy only began to die down from 1830 when James Kempt ordered that jurors be drawn from the body of the district; the denouement came in 1832 when the legislature adopted a law regulating the qualification and selection of jurors " Donald Fyson Grand Juries Political Power And Citizenship In Quebec And Lower Canada 1764-1830 a paper for the 77th annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association Ottawa May 1998TPL 1549. 18131000943Montpelier: Wright and Sibley one part 1813. Hardcover. Fair. Significant wear to the entire volume spine illegible front board lacks leather no front or rear endpapers preliminaries or aftermatter firmly bound but some pages proud and a few loose. The volume which is comprised of three separately paginated sections bound in one all dealing with the causes of and Vermont's response to the War of 1812. It opens with "Proceedings &c. "no title page or imprint which is a 52 page chronicle by the Democratic Republican side of the controversy surrounding the election of Federalist Martin Chittenden by the Vermont House of Representatives in the contested gubernatorial election of 1813. An election that saw three term Governor Jonas Galusha fail to win a plurality due to voter anger over his support for the War of 1812. The Democratic Republicans complained of many schemes by the Federalists to secure the office. The Federalist success in the House election remains unexplained by anything other than chicanery and these pages have several examples of the schemes being carried out and inducements being offered. Not in Gilman or Bassett Section two which carries the imprint of Wright and Sibley Montpelier 1813 is the "Protest of the Minority of the House of Representatives of the State of Vermont on the Question of Adopting the Reported Answer to His Excellency's Speech November 10 1813." Not in Gilman or Bassett Governor Martin Chittenden His Excellency opposed the War of 1812 and in one of his first official acts he ordered the Vermont Militia of which he was the former commander back to Vermont from Plattsburgh New York. Their officers refused to obey his orders. Subsequently the American victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh doomed Chittenden's future political prospects. Wright & Sibley published a partisan Democratic Republican newspaper in Montpelier The Freemen's Press. Gilman says of them that they "appear to have been the leading Democrats of Montpelier and the neighboring towns." There follows the main body of the volume a 240 page section which sadly lacks the concluding 4 or 5 pages with last existing page being badly torn. This section begins with no title page or imprint however above the heading appears the signature of William Slade- Cornwall. The section which is annotated presumably by Slade the following section appears to be annotated in the same hand is comprised of letters between James Monroe & William Pinkney and their English counterparts regarding treaty negotiations. The treaty begins on page 146 titled "TREATY OF amity commerce and navigation between his Britannic majesty and the United States of America." This would be the so-called MonroePinkney Treaty of 1806 a treaty drawn up by diplomats of the United States and Britain as a renewal of the Jay Treaty of 1795. It was rejected by President Thomas Jefferson and never took effect. The treaty was negotiated by minister to England James Monroe and his associate William Pinkney on behalf of the administration of President Thomas Jefferson and Lord Holland and Lord Auckland on behalf of the government headed by Lord Grenville. The account herein closes with a letter from the new Foreign Secretary George Canning regretting the American response to the negations but happy that the Leopard-Chesapeake affair is no longer preventing discussion of other matters. This letter is the incomplete bit. Finally the volume turns to matter just alluded to with a new section also without title page or imprint letters between James Monroe James Madison and George Canning the British Foreign Secretary regarding the ChesapeakeLeopard Affair an attack on an American military vessel in American waters by a British warship resulting in the impressment of four American sailors as deserters from the British Navy. The incident outraged the American public as President Thomas Jefferson noted: "Never since the Battle of Lexington have I seen this country in such a state of exasperation as at present and eve

Wright and Sibley (one part) hardcover

1900List518Most Cuba or Jacksonville 1900. Silver gelatin or albumen photographs various sizes ranging from 3 x 3 to 6 x 8 most captioned to verso. With handwritten manuscript four leaves discussing various diseases. The Spanish-American War was the first war in which nurses formed their own dedicated units as well as the first war in which they were accepted within military hospitals. While no nurses died in battle 153 died during the war from disease. Nurses were responsible for both treating soldiers as well as maintaining sanitary conditions within the camps. Conditions were often poor leading some to work until they were too sick to continue.

The current collection of photographs documents the experiences of a Mrs. Waters who was originally from Groton Massachusetts. The collection begins with a couple early photographs including a portrait as a young woman and a cyanotype of one of Waters' leprosy patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The next section shows Waters' training in Jacksonville Florida with either the Fourth or Seventh Army Corps at what was called Camp Cuba Libre both Corps trained there in 1898. The photographs of Jacksonville show life around the military camp and environs with some notable photographs of African-American inhabitants of the region. Three photographs quite notably show the Congregation of American Sisters a small group of American Indian nuns led by Reverend Francis Craft. The photographs taken in Cuba are notable for their portrayal of local life. Several photographs of military installations are taken around the "trocha" or line established by General Valeriana Weyler from Mariel to Majana. Another notable photograph is a cabinet card of a large group of nurses taken by the Havana photographer R. Testar.

The group overall shows very early photographic records of military nurses in training as well as a scarce photographic record from a woman in a combat situation. The photographs are generally well preserved in very good to excellent condition with some light fading. Accompanying the photographs is a four page manuscript essay presumably by Waters discussing leprosy as well as the booklet Spanish Phrase Book for American Soldiers and Sailors published by the National Relief Commission of Philadelphia.

Offered in partnership with Daniel / Oliver Gallery. books
