The first half of the report dated April 30 1839 is concerned with the American involvement in the Rebellion: the raids conducted by sympathizers in the northern states including extensive discussion of the seizure and burning of the steamer Sir Robert Peel. First published in 1857. The author of this report and minority of one was James Johnston Pettigrew 1828-1863. The question being considered was apparently whether South Carolina should revive the slave trade. Pettigrew argued against its revival although he was not against slavery. Pettigrew later served with distinction in the Confederate army rising to the rank of Brigadier General. Political Anti-Masonry which first began in New York gained a strong foothold in Rhode Island beginning in 1829. By 1831 the Anti-Masons convinced the state legislature to investigate Freemasonry: "Whereas the crimes and enormities within a few years committed in a neighboring State by certain Freemasons avowedly in the cause of masonry have excited universal indignation and abhorrence and have awakened jealousies and suspicions very unfavorable to all masonic institutions. Therefore in the hope of allaying the great and increasing excitement thus occasioned and that the innocent may be distinguished from the guilty if in this state there are any who can justly be charged with advocating the criminal doctrines imputed to freemasonry. are hereby appointed a committee fully to investigate and inquire into its causes." A few old ink marks. Old ink name "John Baxter" top of the title page. <br /> <br /> A brief search on the internet provided no information on the Charlotte and Camden Railroad. However most likely the name of "Camden" was replaced with "South Carolina" to become the Charlotte South Carolina Railroad Company. Construction began on the rail route from Charlotte to Columbia South Carolina in 1847 the year after this report. The Charlotte South Carolina Railroad began in 1852 and existed until 1869 when it was absorbed by Charlotte Columbia and Augusta Railroad. The line ran from Charlotte North Carolina to Columbia South Carolina and was the first carrier to serve Mecklenburg County North Carolina. Edward Shippen IV 1729-1806 was lawyer judge government official and prominent figure in colonial and post-revolutionary Philadelphia. In 1791 he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court serving with Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd both kinsmen and former students. Shippen became chief justice in 1799 but in 1804 was impeached on flimsey political grounds. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate acquitted him and his associates. 8vo 491 86 pp. The text is followed by a 96-page appendix which cites numerous legal points in previous cases as they relate to this one.
