After John Conyers’ efforts to create a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. failed in congress days following his assassination the first celebrations of Martin Luther King’s birthday began in 1969 when the newly created King Center led by Coretta Scott King organized events in King’s honor on his birthday of January 15th. Observations of King’s birthday followed in each subsequent year with the SCLC collecting three million signatures in support of a national holiday in 1971. Despite these efforts no bill honoring King would be signed into law until 1973 in Illinois. Offered here is a poster from one of these early celebrations in 1972. We can find no record of the artist - a J.L. - or similar surviving examples of this poster. unknown
1971163219Newark: Essex County College 1971. Vintage poster for "Dick Gregory and The Blackmotion Experience in 'Birth of a King' / Fri. January 15 1971" at the Newark Symphony Hall presented by Essex Community College. OCLC locates no holdings. Scarce.

The nearly six-hour program "Birth of a King" starring activist and comedian Dick Gregory can be reasonably assumed to have been a celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. though we have been unable to locate any documentation of the performance other than scant contemporary newspaper notices. The two contemporary local newspaper notices found however note the performance of "Birth of King" on January 15 1971 was held at the RKO Proctor's Theatre in Newark not the Newark Symphony Hall as noted on the poster. We have also been unable to find any record of the performance ensemble "The Blackmotion Experience" which headlined the program with Gregory.

The January 14 1971 issue of "The Jersey Journal" noted the performance in their "Cultural Calendar" as "Birth of a King Afro-American Art and Music at RKO Procter sic Theater 116 Market St. Newark Tomorrow 10 a.m. to 4 p.m." and the January 15 1971 issue of "The Herald-News" noted the performance in their "Cultural Calendar" as "The Birth of a King - Afro-American program of music and arts sponsored by Essex County College. RKO Proctor Theater 116 Market St. Newark. Today 10-4."

14 x 22 inches on heavy card stock. Very Good plus with faint colored pencil annotations to the top right dampstaining to the bottom and some edgewear including several closed tears and a small chip to the lower left side. Beautiful massive Volume of Very good condition with only minor signs of wear to the edge. "Table Talk" German: Tischreden is a collection of Martin Luther's sayings around the dinner table at Lutherhaus Luther's home but also at other times and locations such as walks in the garden or notes taken while on journeys. It is based on notes taken by various students of Luther between 1531 and 1546. It was compiled by Johannes Mathesius J. Aurifaber V. Dietrich Ernst Kroker and several others and published at Eisleben in 1566. Mathesius spoke enthusiastically of the privilege of eating with Luther and hearing him converse. Earlier notetakers had written down only the serious remarks of Luther but Mathesius also wrote down the facetious or even damaging remarks a sign of the increasing reverence in which Luther was held.
