After his father's death in 1839 his mother took the family to New Hampshire. Townsend began work for the Boston Concord and Montreal Railroad atht ew age of 12. Townsend graduated from Dartmouth with an A.B. in 1859. After further study at Andover Theological Seminary following graduation in 1862 he enlisted in the Sixteenth N.H. VolunteerInfantry as a private. Following the war he was ordained in the Methodist Church. Prior to this volume Townsend authored New Hampshire Volunteers in 1896. This history of his own regiment was published the following year. Broadfoot 582. Townsend was a noted Creationist and an outspoken opponent of Charles Darwin.
