1972List916N.P. 1972. . Poster measuring 14 x 22 inches. Some marks a closed tear with tape repair edgewear and creasing very good minus overall. Very Good. After John Conyers’ efforts to create a national holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. failed in congress days following his assassination the first celebrations of Martin Luther King’s birthday began in 1969 when the newly created King Center led by Coretta Scott King organized events in King’s honor on his birthday of January 15th. Observations of King’s birthday followed in each subsequent year with the SCLC collecting three million signatures in support of a national holiday in 1971. Despite these efforts no bill honoring King would be signed into law until 1973 in Illinois. Offered here is a poster from one of these early celebrations in 1972. We can find no record of the artist - a J.L. - or similar surviving examples of this poster. unknown

1968210091968. King Martin Luther Jr. Speech recordings archive 1968 documenting the dissemination of Civil Rights Movement oratory through commercial audio media during the final year of King's life. These recordings situate King as a central figure in African American political leadership preserving his speeches as both rhetorical events and widely distributed cultural texts. The archive provides direct access to the cadence tone and delivery of key addresses including those tied to mass protest nonviolent philosophy and the closing phase of his activism in 1968.

Archive comprises 2 first pressing 33 RPM vinyl records. 1 In Search of Freedom 1968 presents a selection of speeches delivered in King's own voice including the "I Have a Dream" address from the 1963 March on Washington the "Commitment to Non-Violence" speech given in Atlanta and an excerpt from his Memphis speech delivered shortly before his death. The album includes a black-and-white cover portrait of King and liner notes featuring an essay by Senator Edward W. Brooke accompanied by a printed track list. 2 Free At Last 1968 compiles speeches from multiple points in King's career including "I've Been to the Mountaintop" delivered in Memphis the day before his assassination in which King reflects on threats against his life and concludes with the declaration "I've been to the mountaintop." Additional recordings include the "Drum Major Instinct" sermon delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church addressing legacy and moral responsibility. The album's reverse includes an essay by Ralph David Abernathy then president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside an image of King's funeral procession. Across both records the selection emphasizes themes of nonviolence racial justice and moral leadership conveyed through King's spoken delivery.

Produced and distributed in the immediate aftermath of King's assassination in April 1968 these recordings reflect efforts to preserve and circulate his speeches as enduring components of Civil Rights Movement history. The inclusion of his final Memphis address and earlier landmark speeches situates the collection within both the height and conclusion of his public career. Minor edge wear and light fraying to record sleeves; records and covers remain well preserved; overall very good condition. This grouping offers a focused audio record of King's rhetoric as it was presented to contemporary audiences. unknown

19683397San Francisco 1968. Very good. Broadsheet on blue paper 13.5 x 8.5 inches. Slight discoloration along top and bottom edges minor edge wear a few soft creases old horizontal folds. An exceedingly rare broadsheet advertising a multi-faceted public march and rally against the Vietnam War and "racism poverty and repression" which took place in San Francisco California about three weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The organizers of the event the April 27 Mobilization Committee framed the day's activities around Dr. King's opposition to the Vietnam War; the broadside calls for the protesters to "pay tribute to the memory" of Dr. King his portrait is printed at the top of the front side of the broadsheet and the entirety of the verso prints excerpts of an April 4 1967 speech by Dr. King railing against the Vietnam War. Particularly interesting is the eclectic list of speakers who participated in the day's events on April 27 1968 which included Muhammad Ali Vanessa Redgrave Jeanette Rankin Bobby Seale Arnold True and Sidney Roger. Ali was in the midst of his appeal after his conviction for draft evasion the previous year and was a natural candidate to speak against the injustices of the Vietnam War. Bobby Seale co-founder of the Black Panthers was four months away from participating in protests at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention after which he was arrested and tried as part of the sham Chicago Eight fiasco.

The diversity of the speakers echoes the quantity of different issues represented by the current broadsheet: Civil Rights the Vietnam War the recent assassination of Dr. King Muhammad Ali's legal fight against the war Bobby Seale's controversial role with the Bay Area Black Panthers women's rights and the role of the American military. We could locate no other copies of this broadsheet in auction history or OCLC. unknown

1940424751Florida South Carolina 1940. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 15" x 11". String-tied cream leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 100 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 7" with captions. Worn edges and rubbing thus very good album with near fine photographs.

A vernacular photo album kept in the 1940s during World War II documenting a young couple's home life in Florida and vacations in South Carolina. The young man Martin C. Luther who took the photos saw himself as a burgeoning photographer and took shots of his family friends and girlfriend to hone his skills. Many of these include tongue-in-cheek captions beneath them including "Ham actors" "the teeth" and "the convict and the beauty." Locations around Florida are featured throughout the album including beaches Cypress Gardens and St. Andrews Church. His girlfriend Caroline is seen posed in her bathing suit on Florida beaches in pinup style lounging poses with captions such as "the girl and the shoes" and "side-view." In one series of photos the Martin is photographed capturing a snap of a sleeping Caroline and the photo he took is inserted next to the action shot. Other beach photos show their friends laughing and smiling. One group photo is captioned "house party at Ledge's" and has an arrow pointed to a man in the shot that reads "looks love sick!" A later photo reads "ruff and his Jewess" and shows a couple on the beach posed for the camera. A section entitled "House party at Folly Beach" shows the friends around the house with one image captioned "the paces in action" of a kissing couple.

A nice collection of amateur photographs depicting leisurely pursuits of a couple and their friends in the 1940s. hardcover
