The publisher Charles Cist 1738-1805 born Charles Thiel in St. Petersburg Russia; he graduated from Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg with a medical degree. He emigrated to the American colonies in 1769 at which time he changed his name. In 1773 he settled in Philadelphia and learned the printing trade. He was a prominent Philadelphia printer of the colonial and post-colonial era issuing works in both German and English. An active supporter of the revolution he had published Thomas Paine�s�The American Crisis he fled Philadelphia when the British took the city in 1777. He started the American Herald in 1784 and the Columbian Magazine in 1786. During the administration of John Adams he became the public printer and established a printing and binding firm in Washington D.C.Along with the printing business he was the first person to introduce anthracite coal to the United States facing opposition in Philadelphia where the public thought he was trying to sell blackened stones. The text is a Martin Luther translation Martin Luther was a leader of the German Protestant Reformation in 1517 with 'Practical Application' commentary below text and prefaces before each book. Several of the prefaces were written by Luther including the preface to the entire New Testament Romans and Revelations. Also included is a introduction to each of the four apostles written by William Cave 30 December 1637 4 August 1713 an English and patristic scholar. From Wikipedia on Luther's Translation: While he was sequestered in the Wartburg Castle 15211522 Luther began to translate the New Testament from ancient Greek into German in order to make it more accessible to all the people of the ""Holy Roman Empire of the German nation."" He translated from the Greek text using Erasmus ' second edition 1519 of the Greek New Testament known as the Textus Receptus . Luther did not translate from the Latin Vulgate translation which is the Latin translation officially used by the Roman Catholic Church. Both Erasmus and Luther had learned Greek at the Latin schools led by the Brethren of the Common Life respectively in Deventer Netherlands and in Magdeburg. These lay brothers added late 15th century Greek as a new subject to their curriculum. At that time Greek was seldom taught even at universities. To help him in translating into contemporary German Luther would make forays into nearby towns and markets to listen to people speaking. He wanted to ensure their comprehension by translating as closely as possible to their contemporary language usage. His translation was published in September 1522 six months after he had returned to Wittenberg. hardcover

The July 1963 4th printing of this historic letter from Dr. King written on April 16th 1963 while imprisoned at the Birmingham City Jail for "defying an injunction against anti-segregation protests". The letter was first printed in May of '63 and was quickly followed up with several succeeding printings in the next few months. This the 4th printing was published in July and has held up well. Very ephemeral to be sure but solid and VG in its stapled wrappers with one thin even crease running down the middle of the panels and light soiling along the edges. Thin octavo 15 pgs.
