Nice inscription from author pasted inside front cover. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page soiling. Also another notation from previous owner below the pasted inscription inside front cover with mailing label pasted there as well. This was written following the retirement of the author from more than fifty years of activity as a country weekly newspaper editor and publisher mainly to hold up he mirror and reflect to any who might be interested in the ways of life in such a line of work and in such an environment; especially to allow the reader to note the changes that have taken place in this span of four score years. The secondary purpose of this book was to record in a lasting way those data and incidents likely to be of most interest to family members friends and acquaintances and 'to such of his posterity as may care for such a record". A third reason --or excuse --for this publication is to gratify the writer's innate love of writing. With the limited edition issued--most of which will be given to those likely to be interested--there is no possibility of its being other than a 'labor of love'. Luther B. Johnson hardcover
192825-55a<p>From the PREFACE: "THE PREPARATION OF THIS BOOK HAS NOT BEEN WITH ANY IDEA OF SELF-GLORY. It is just a message to the white race; to bring my people before their eyes in a true and authentic manner. The American Indian has been written ABOOUT BY HUNDREDS OF AUTHORS OF WHITE BLOOD OR POSSIBLY BY AN INDIAN OF MIXED BLOOD WHO HAS SPENT THE GREATER PART OF HIS LIFE AWAY FROM A RESERVATION. THESE ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO WRITE ACCURATELY ABOUT THE STRUGGLES AND DISAPPOINTMENTS OF THE INDIAN."</p><p>See photos of contents/illustrations and condition. Binding is soound. 13498New York: Dempsey & Carrol n.y. Paperback. 32mo. Stiff tan wrappers. 15pp. Very good. Tight and attractive with a front wrapper title "Katy Did or Katy Did n't" in green and a large graphic of this insect likewise in green. Probable sole edition. Marsh inscribes the title page handsomely to "Mrs Fanny Barrow / with regards of / The Reporter / Luther R. Marsh." Marsh also tips in a newsprint clipping of three additional stanzas to a rear flyleaf then on the penultimate text page inks in an insert mark and writes "post 3 verses." Clever comical verse about katydids and their cricket-like noise speculating what they must be gossiping about -- and its obvious parallels to the human condition. Accompanied by a fine content Autograph Letter Signed from Marsh 3pp 5" X 8" n.p. 1888 May 9. Addressed to "Aunt Fanny" Frances Elizabeth Barrow 1822-94 author of many popular children's tales under the nom-de-plume "Aunt Fanny". Very good. Heavy mounting traces on blank fourth leaf. Starts off: "Your charming ditty / Is sweetly witty: / For which I send my thanks. / To make amend / I hereby send / Our Katy's little pranks." Marsh must have been embroiled in some controversy at the time for he comments: "Did you ever know a fellow of my size who could of a sudden out of a clear sky evoke such a newspaper cyclone and tumultuous uproar and tidal wave of falsehood simply by avowing his belief that the testimonies in the Bible did not cease with John in Patmos in the year 96 A.D. but continue to our time Lord how the world is given to lying said Falstaff -- but the lies of those days were unspotted veracity compared with the inventions of New York newspaper Reporters!" A fascinating unusual pair. Marsh 1813-1902 was a noted New York orator attorney and one-time partner of Daniel Webster. He published several small pieces over the years the only other verse other than "The Great Debates" being "A Slight Souvenir of a Visit to Yorktown Centennial Celebration in October 1881 on board the Steam Yacht Yosemit" sic. A quite scarce and unusual pamphlet accompanied by a fascinatingly bizarre author letter. Dempsey & Carrol paperback
