After practicing medicine in small towns in New Hampshire Cutter embarked upon a career as a medical lecturer throughout the United States. His first publication for the lay public was First book on anatomy and physiology Boston 1847. This was an elementary work intended for individuals with little medical knowledge. It contained many practical suggestions for maintaining good hygiene a glossary of scientific terms and a section of poisons and their antidotes. It was very popular; 500000 copies were sold by 1871.
