Figlia del pittore Schindler e madre della scultrice Anna Mahler, ferrane fatale per alcuni, fonte d'ispirazione per altri, questa donna straordinaria svolse nel corso della sua lunga vita un ruolo di primo piano negli ambienti artistici di Vienna, Berlino e New York. Introdotta nei circoli della Secessione Viennese, la sua passione letteraria e un carattere intrigante esercitarono un forte fascino sulle maggiori personalità artistiche del XX secolo. Dal pittore Gustav Klimt al compositore von Zemlinsky, fino al direttore dell'Opera Gustav Mahler, che la sposò, tarpando ali e aspirazioni di una donna troppo inquieta per essere relegata a ruoli tradizionali. La scoperta di una relazione segreta con l'architetto tedesco Walter Gropius indusse Mahler a rivolgersi nientemeno che al dottor Freud. Fra i tanti futuri amanti della vedova Alma, sposatasi una seconda e terza volta, il più morboso si rivelerà Oskar Kokoschka, ossessionato dalla riproduzione maniacale di questa Sposa del vento. A lungo si è pensato che Alma abbia sacrificato a Gustav Mahler le proprie doti di compositrice, sfociate unicamente nei Lieder su testi di Rilke, Werfel e Novalis. Ma la verità va cercata nella poliedrica immagine di una donna che Thomas Mann soprannominò la "grande vedova": tanto densa quanto contraddittoria, e dotata di un vero talento per la costruzione del suo mito.
