There are different issues: This a copy of the one with the third word of the Greek title readiing "Diathche" and not "Diathke" and with the printer's device showing the man holding the sun in his left hand. Thus this is Darlow and Moule issue "B." => Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of one of the issues of this edition. Â Â Â Â Provenance: Manuscript ownership inscription of John Ray dated 1716 on retained fly-leaf; ownership signature of Robert L. Wilson New York 1818 on title-page; gilt supra-libros of Barzillai Slosson dated 1829. Later in the Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released. Â Â Â Â Binding: American binding of dark blue goat richly gilt with wide floral border on covers and spine distinctively gilt using rules and floral roll. Board edges with a gilt roll; turn-ins gilt tooled. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Gilt supra-libros of Barzillai Slosson as above. Unsigned. Â Â Â Â Barzillai Slosson may have been related to the lawyer of the same name who was active in Kent CT at the end of the 18th century and into the fourth decade of the 19th whose account books are in the Yale Law Library; perhaps the Barzillai who graduated from Columbia College in 1818 and later moved to Geneva NY where he was active and successful in business and civic affairs. Strand Kenneth "Saur German Bibles" Andrews University Studies Spring/Summer 1994 Vol. 32 Nos. 1-2 57-106.The second edition printed by Christopher Saur II the first edition having been published in 1743. Saur's family immigrated to Pennsylvania from Westphalia in 1724. Saur and his father advocated for Quaker causes via their printing activities in Pennsylvania. Saur was in charge of the bindery and of English language publications at his father's business. After his father's death Saur II continued to publish their newspaper their almanacs and their religious books bibles and hymnals etc. In 1773 Saur the II established a paper mill on the Schuylkill River which would greatly increase his wealth and standing in British America. However because of his later reluctance to participate in the American Revolution due to his Quaker beliefs Saur would have his house and properties sold off and died poor. This is the first Bible printed in any European language in the Continental United States. The 1763 edition eliminated Saur I's postface and included a new Foreword. 2000 copies of this second edition were printed. A Fair only example with significant loss to the spine and leather on the boards exposing the gatherings and the wood of the boards; lacks the first title page the free front endpaper the foreword the table of contents and the first page of the Old Testament; leaves show some dampstains and a few tiny tears. The edition is reported to have consisted of some 1500 copies. The rationale behind the preparation of this text was much the same as the impetus leading to the publication by Elzevier of a modern Greek translation of the Dutch Reformed Catechism in 1648. An interleaved and heavily annotated copy of the Gospels and Acts of "Beza's third major edition of the Greek New Testament. The text follows that of the second major edition 1582 with only five exceptions" Darlow and Moule. => One should note that the title-page proclaims this "quarta editio" and that this is Estienne's third folio printing of Beza's N.T. Â Â Â Â Beza's New Testament Greek text is here accompanied by his Latin and the Vulgate i.e. Catholic Latin translations the trio appearing in parallel columns on each page with => extensive notes that often fill as much as one-third to one-half of a page and with parallel references additionally set in the margins. The volume's title-page is printed in red and black and bears Henri Estienne's printer's device; a different finely wrought woodcut headpiece opens each book with each column on those pages bearing a woodcut initial at its head and a few of the books of the N.T. end with woodcut tailpieces. Â Â Â Â Evidence of readership: An interleaved copy with => the vast majority of the leaves bearing an early 19th-century reader's notes and annotations. The notes cite references published as late as 1809 and it is clear that the natively German-speaking scholar was comfortable in Greek Hebrew Latin and English. Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership signature on title-page of Leon St. Vincent. Later in The Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released; no markings. Â Â Â Â The paper stock used for the interleaving has the classic ProPatria watermark and that and its countermark match Churchill's 151 which has a starting date of 1799. On the interleaves' watermarks see: Churchill Watermarks in paper in Holland England France etc. in the XVII and XVIII centuries. 19th-century half vellum with German pastepaper over boards spine with tinted and tooled label text recased and new endpapers; vol. Title-page creased and dust-soiled all leaves before pp. 9/10 rodent-gnawed in lower outside corner with loss of paper but not of text or manuscript annotation and a bit of light waterstaining to rearmost leaves only. => An important edition and a singular copy. Jakob Ceporinus 14991525 born Jakob Wiesendanger the editor of this Greek Testament was => a Swiss humanist who attended the universities of Cologne and Vienna and acquired knowledge of Hebrew by studying with the German humanist Johannes Reuchlin in Ingolstadt. He worked in Basel as a proofreader for a printing house settled in Zurich and in April of 1525 was appointed as => the first Reader of Greek and Hebrew at Zwingli's school of theology in Zurich. He died unexpectedly in December 1525. Â Â Â Â The first edition of his Greek New Testament appeared in 1524 from the same printer as this third edition of 1535 and like that first closely follows the Erasmus third edition with a few variants and independent readings. Also as with the 1524 edition the title-page has => four woodcuts after Urs Graf representing the evangelists and that leaf is followed by Oecolampadius' "In sacrarum literarum lectionem . . . exhortatio" pi 27. Â Â Â Â The work was published at the expense of Johann Schabler called Wattenschnee whose device with motto "Durum pacientia frango" is on the verso of last leaf. The Testament text is in Greek only and each book begins with a woodcut headpiece and a historiated initial with some initials after Dance of Death designs by => Hans Holbein. Â Â Â Â Reuss lists this among "Editiones Erasmicae." Â Â Â Â Provenance: 19th-century signature on front fly-leaf of W.C.S. Tole ; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Berchem Invent. & Matham sic Sculp depicting two female figures holding La Sainte Bible; together with two cherubs one holding the Ten Commandments and Le Saint Evangile; the latter with his foot on a skull. This spectacular frontispiece combines the works from three profound engravers of Dutch 17th century publishing activities. There are numerous engraved illustrations throughout the text plus five added maps and plans. Contemporary vellum spliced or splitting in some areas otherwise holding up well a robust volume. La Sainte Bible printed by Louis and Daniel Elzevier of Amsterdam has been called without exception the most splendid French Bible ever printed Bibl. Sussexiana. However Brunet echoed by Graesse calls is très remarquable par sa belle éxecution typographique; mais la correction en a eté peu soignée et les notes ne sont pas estimées. A magnificent but not very correct edition. According to the catalogue of 1675 it was printed in four sizes of type Imperial France Real Veluws Real and Grand Mediaen. It was one of the few large-format productions of the Elzevier presses better known for their small Port-Royal New Testaments. The two printmakers who engraved Berchems designs for the Bible maps Abraham Blooteling 1640-1690 and Jan de Visscher 1632-1692 were highly respected artists who lived and worked in Amsterdam. These engravers must have been acquainted and had probably studied together in the workshop of Cornelis Visscher. Both most likely were selected or at least approved by Berchem as engravers of the map prints. Four of the five maps within the 1669 La Sainte Bible are ornamented with illustrations engraved from models by Berchem. Designs on the fifth map may also be by Berchem. 17673087Cambridge: John Archdeacon 1767. Two vols. 6.75 x 4.25". Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: "Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere. The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish. That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself. John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

Two volumes the Bible one of 975 copies elephant folio size 942 pp. and Making of the Bible number 178 of 1875 copies quarto size 41 pp. The second folio Bible designed by Bruce Rogers this time for an American publisher his first was the "Oxford Lectern Bible" published in 1935 using the King James Version. No other book designer / typographer from the history of printing can claim to have designed two complete folio Bibles each one highly regarded. Bruce Rogers 1870-1857 American typographer who invented the "Centaur" tyepface based on the Renaissance-period printing of Nicolas Jenson is considered by many to be one of the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. He designed books for the Riverside Press Cambridge when he cut his first typeface "Montaigne" named for the first book it appeared in "The Essays of Montaigne" 1903; he designed "Centaur" while working as house designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1916 he worked for the Cambridge University Press and a few years later returned to the U.S. where he met William Edwin Rudge and was employed by him at his Mount Vernon Press. During this time he also designed books for Harvard University Press and served as typographic advisor to Lanston Monotype. In 1928 Rogers returned to England where he produced what many have called "the most important and notable typographic achievement of the twentieth century" being his Oxford Lectern Bible. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences. Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108. The first contayning the interpretation of the Hebrue Caldean Greeke and Latine wordes and names scateringly dispersed throughout the whole Bible with their common places following euery of them: and the second comprehending all such other principall words and matters as concerne the sense and meaning of the Scriptures or direct vnto any necessarie and good instruction. The further contents and vse of both the which tables for breuitie sake is expressed more a large in the preface to the reader. Collected by R.F.H. Our year based upon the issue points as shown by the British Library: "with The "A" of signature mark "A4" under the "t" of "the"" ESTC S125409. Quarto 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches; 236 x 185 mm. 92 leaves. A8-L8 M4. With preface signed "Thine in the Lord Robart F. Herrey" and dated "xxii of December. An. Domini. 1578." We could find no other complete copies of this first edition of "Concordance" at auction in the past 50 years. Although this comes separately The Herrey "Concordance" is generally found issued with a Barker Geneva Bible starting with the date 1580. There were several printings of this "Concordance" starting in 1580 and going into the next decade however only the present copy and one other printing were issued with the two versions of the Barker Bibles of 1580. Present copy with Signatures: A-L M and with The "A" of signature mark "A4" under the "t" of "the". This version was issued with the 1580 Bible Darlow & Moule 123. Another version of the same year with Signatures: A-C D-V was issued with the 1580 Bible Darlow & Moule 124. Bound separately in modern full brown morocco. Covers ruled in triple blind and with a central "Cross" devise in blind on both covers. Newer endpapers. Some occasional ink small hand marginalia. Edges of leaves a bit frayed. A stain to bottom margin of leaves H2-H3. A paper repair to bottom margin of final leaf M4 not affecting text. Overall very good. According to Herbert and Darlow & Moule " The Concordances which form an essential part of the volume of the Bible were compiled by Robart F.
