Very Good/Fine facsimile of "Ms Kennicotti" held in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University a finely decorated manuscript of the Hebrew Bible that resembles in some ways the Book of Kells in the use of animal figures and and intricate marginal decorations although the style comes from the Ibero-Islamic tradition rather than the Celtic one. The manuscript was copied out twenty years prior to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 by Moshe Ibn Zabara and Yosef Ibn Chaim containing the entire Tanak together with the Radak commentary and Sefer HaMichlol. It is known as the "Kennicott Bible" after Benjamin Kennicot 1718-1783 the English clergyman and Hebraist who acquired the manuscript for Oxford University. An exceptionally beautiful facsimile five and a half years in the making it is printed on deluxe paper stock intended to reproduce the appearance of the original vellum. The gold highlights in the facsimile illustrations were applied by hand. The commentary by Bezalel Narkiss and Aliza Cohen-Mushlin provides a scholarly yet approachable historical context and artistic appreciation. In 2006 sold at Sothebys London 11 April 2006 lot 2312. <br/><br/>Fifth folio edition of the Latin Bible as Biblia Utriusque Testamenti published by Robert Estienne 15031559 in 1556 but with the original edition of the new Latin translation and commentary on the New Testament by Theodore Beza 15191605; notably this edition appeared contemporaneously with the printing of John Calvins Psalms Commentary. Theodore Beza a French Reformed Protestant theologian and Calvinist produced one Latin and four Greek-Latin editions of the New Testament in his lifetime working carefully through extant Greek manuscript sources. Estiennes great glossed Latin Bible of 1556/57 thus contained the translation of the Old Testament by Dominican philologist Sante Pagnini or Pagninus 14701536 first printed in 1528. Based on the Hebrew Pagninis text is in the center of each page and Bezas translation from the Greek is in smaller type to the side with commentary and alternate readings underneath. The Estienne-Beza Latin Bible with its copious notes and ties to Calvinist theology was of considerable importance in the early modern era. The 20 woodcut biblical illustrations were first used in an Estienne edition of the Bible printed in Paris in 1540. This compact glossed Bible densely and economically printed with no break between the Old and New Testaments is enlivened by hundreds of historiated woodcut initials from woodcut alphabets designed by Guillaume Leroy who also designed the six-part full-page woodcut of the Creation. Mareschal's useful "pocket" Bibles were bestsellers this being the fourth of six octavo editions from his press. They were among the first Bible editions to include a rhyming mnemonic Biblical summary by the minorite friar Franciscus Gothi in which each four-line verse summarizes a Biblical chapter. Occupying here the final two quires and called for in the colophon it is not recorded by Baudrier or Gültlingen. Possibly buyers had the choice of including it or not in their copies. Otherwise the text of Mareschal's octavo Bibles follows that of the Bible printed in Basel in 1509 by Johann Petri and Froben using the text edited by the Dominican Alberto Castellano and supplying for the first time marginal notes citing canon law. The apparatus includes four tables and a glossary of Hebrew names. As in the Petri editions a six-line commendatory poem by Matthias Sambucellus is printed on the title here with the first word of the last line incorrectly given as "Omne" instead of "Omine."The publisher Simon Vincent belonged to Lyon's powerful booksellers' guild the Compagnie des Libraires whose members helped Mareschal during his early years impressed by his skill conscientiousness and sobriety "a rare trait among printers of this period" notes Baudrier qualities which contrasted markedly with those of the printer Michel Topie whose press Mareschal had acquired in 1512 Baudrier 11:383.USTC 145003; Adams B-997; Pettegree & Walsby French Vernacular Books III: 57271. 179168436Very Rare Early American Edition of a ChildrenÃs Pocket Bible BIBLE IN ENGLISH. The Holy Bible Abridged: Or the History of the Old and New Testament. Illustrated with Notes and Adorned with Cuts. For the Use of Children. Two lines from Luke. Boston: Samuel Hall 1791. Early American edition and first Samuel Hall edition second Boston edition. There were only a total of five Children's bibles published in America before 1791. The First American edition was printed in Boston in 1782 by Robert Hodge for N. Coverly followed by a Worcester Massachusetts 1786 edition by Isaiah Thomas 1786 and 1788 Philadelphia editions and a 1790 New York edition. Our present copy was published the year after the New York edition. Thirtytwomo 4 1/8 x 2 3/4 inches; 104 x 67 mm. 4 vii-ix 8 18-173 1 pp. With frontispiece of Adam and Eve and fifty-nine crude but charming woodcuts illustrations depicting stories from the text meant to appeal to young children. The stories that have been abridged for use in this Bible generally consist of the more well- known stories which would be of interest to children such as Creation Adam & Eve and Jonah and the Whale from the Old Testament as well as the birth baptism and crucifixion of Jesus from the New Testament. Listed in Evans but not in Sabin. We could find no copies of this edition at auction and only one copy found at the Massachusetts Historical Society. All early American editions are rare and only two complete copies of the New York 1790 edition since 1976. There was the 1786 Worcester edition at auction in 2008 but it was incomplete. Contemporary marbled paper over boards repacked with matching paper. Inner hinges strengthened. Bound without endpapers. Some soiling and toning throughout. One leaf page 145 with some fraying to the edges not affecting text. Overall very good particularly for a childrenÃs book. The rarity of this book can somewhat be contributed to its very small size and that it was intended for the use of children. Something as delicate and tiny as this Bible in the hands of a child had little hope for a bright future. ìBy 1789 Bible story collections specifically for children had existed in the mother country for nearly a century an active market in the American colonies had not opened up. Neither American Protestants nor American Catholics of whom were growing in numbers seemed ready to give Bible stories to their children. In the 1780Ãs the American situation changed radically. Boston printers pirated NewberyÃs Holy Bible Abridged; in 1786 the astute Worcester printer Isaiah Thomas followed suit; and by 1815 The Holy Bible Abridged had been printed in urban and provincial print centers all over the America northeast.î The Bible for Children: From the Age of Gutenberg to the Present. Wilkin printed this tiny volume in 1727 and Adomeit notes that "copies are most commonly found with date altered in ink to 1728" as is indeed the case here "but there seems to be no difference between the copies outside of this change." The bible of Sophia Augusta Brown 1825-1909 wife of John Carter Brown herself an active bibliophile who helped her husband build his library and oversaw its stewardship after his death. Sophia Augusta was 34 and John Carter Brown 61 when they married after a brief courtship on June 23 1859. That event is recorded in the family record between the Old and New Testaments as are the births and marriages of the couple's three children--John Nicholas Brown Harold Brown and Sophia Augusta--the marriages of the two sons and the death of John Carter Brown "dearly loved Husband & Father" on June 10 1874. The younger Sophia Augusta Brown married banker and businessman William Watts Sherman 1842-1912 whose Newport RI house is an architectural landmark.<br/><br/>The daughter of Patrick Browne an Anglo-Irish jurist and member of Her Majesty's Council of the Bahamas and Harriet Thayer of Providence a direct descendant of Roger Williams Sophia Augusta Brown was "an indomitable force in an era when women were discovering a role for themselves in the charitable sector . For Sophia Augusta perpetuating her husband's mission through the sound management and enhancement of his collection was her way of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and understanding among peoples . From her sons' earliest age Sophia Augusta ensured they would develop an appreciation for the care condition and housing of books . John Nicholas and Harold often accompanied their mother to booksellers and private collectors. At an early age they were shown priceless works: a Columbus letter the papers of Leonardo daVinci a note by Galileo . On his trips to Europe as an adult John Nicholas was expected to report back . with his assessment of the books he encountered . When he turned 22 in 1883 Sophia Augusta entrusted him with the care of the library" Sylvia Brown Grappling with Legacy: Rhode Island's Brown Family and the American Philanthropic Impulse 2017. The Bible opens with a frontispiece engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; the Apocrypha are present in this copy and the New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1776. The BCP is bound with Companion to the Altar "Note This Book is bound up with the Common-Prayers of several sorts printed by the University of Cambridge" as per the title-page; Sternhold & Hopkins bring up the rear.<br>Â Â Â Â Bindings: Contemporary mottled green morocco covers framed in Greek key roll and dentelles composed of urn and flower motifs surrounding central JHS medallions with red morocco inlays and gilt-tooled flames; spines with gilt-tooled compartment decorations Bible spine with gilt-stamped red leather title-label. While the covers of the two volumes are strongly similar overall and "read" as => identical on first glance the details of the design vary slightly between the Bible and the BCP as the size disparity and possibly the time gap between the publication dates necessitated the use of different tools. The spine designs differ more notably but still most companionably with the Bible's spine decorations being built up with foliate and floral motifs and the BCP's with suns and stars. => To engage in minute comparison of these bindings' detail is an entrancing exercise.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper of Bible used for family record: Francis James Barwell de Sandol Roy born in 1793 and died in 1813 "Quel angoisse!"; Henri Guillaume de Sandol Roy born in 1797; and a list of grandchildren: François Sophie Anna and Alfred. The title-page inscription confirms that this set was owned by Sophie Bridget Barwell de Sandol Roy 17691850 daughter of William Barwell a director of the East India Company; her brother Richard became a famously wealthy and scandalous nabob. Dubbed "la belle Anglaise" following her arrival in Neuchâtel Sophie made a great splash in Swiss society and received a proposal from Colonel François Isaac de Sandol Roy sometimes given as Sandol-Roy a proposal which she at first rejected until he subsequently saved her from the guillotine in revolutionary Paris! The first joint publication of the Old and New Testaments as an entity in the Hawaiian language printed for the American Bible Society at the Mission Presses in Oahu Old Testament and Honolulu New Testament. A number of printings of various books or groups of books of the Bible were printed as early as 1827 and the first Hawaiian printing of the New Testament appeared in 1835 with the Old Testament following in 1838. These printings are frequently found bound together although issued separately. This is the first publication of the complete approved text as an entity paginated continuously and issued as one book. The New Testament has its own titlepage p.1129 and imprint. The verso of the first titlepage bears the words "Ka lua o ke pai ana" the second printing referring to the only other printing of the entire Old Testament in 1838 at the same press. A second printing of the entire Bible was made later in 1843; but curiously enough Judd et al record no other complete printing of the Bible in the Hawaiian language through 1899. <br> <br> A handsome copy of an important Hawaiian Bible in a Hawaiian binding. No other copy besides this present copy has been at auction in the past 50 years. Early 19th-century mottled sheep. Boards tooled in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt. With red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Board edges tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some minor dampstaining mainly to lower blank margin of preliminaries. Signature G is toned. Leaves O3 and O4 with marginal paper repair not affecting text. Final leaf is toned and has a near invisible paper repair not affecting text. Overall a very good copy. "A native of Burgos educated at Louvain and Wittenberg Francisco de Enzinas 1518-52 was a humanist scholar and Protestant convert who produced the first Spanish version of the New Testament printed in 1543 in Antwerp. He formed a partnership with the Strassburg printer Augustin Fries to publish Spanish translations of Greek classics and the remainder of the Bible of which he was only able to complete Psalms Ecclesiasticus Job and Proverbs before his death. Baudrier VIII 241 not having seen or located a copy citing Brunet supplement II 712" "Even before the complete edition of Castellio's Latin Bible appeared Enzinas who had already produced a Spanish Bible New Testament in Antewerp in 1543 had translated the Psalter the Wisdom of Solomon Jesus Sirach present copy and the book of Job into Spanish. All of these appeared with the false address 'En Leon en casa de Sebastian Grypho' though they were in fact his translations from manuscript versions of Castellio's edition. In the early 18th century this volume was in the collection of Gallus Winckelmann 16951757 a Benedictine monk and scholar active at Banz Abbey in Bavaria; his note on AA1: Coemit ad usum F. Gallus Winckellmann Professus Banthensis. The early-19th century signature of Daniel Kendig on front endpaper above perhaps an earlier inscription noting Lyras commentaries. Then in England the front pastedown with the mid-19th century bookplate of Joseph M. Lybrand rector of Saint Pauls Church Camden and America with the early-20th century labels of the Philadelphia Divinity School their bookplate and perforated stamp formerly collection number 4436. <br/><br/>This volume is part three of four in the second Koberger edition of the Bible printed in Nuremberg in 148687; parts one through three were undated with the fourth part dated 3 December 1487. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra 12701349 with the additions of Paul of Burgos ca. 13511435 and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering d. 1469 as well as the commentary of William the Breton ca. 11651225 on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyras biblical gloss or Postilla encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiels Vision and the various views and implements of Solomons Temple which were first printed by Koberger in 1481 with the complete commentary. Title soiled lower margin of first few leaves wormed and frayed with some loss to woodcut title border a few short marginal tears some mostly marginal dampstaining minor worming to lower inner margins a few inkstains slight discoloration throughout. Despite these minor flaws this is a beautiful example of a French woodcut Bible completely unsophisticated. Contemporary ink inscription on back pastedown dated 1534 contemporary ink inscription on the recto of D4 beneath the Nativity cut eighteenth- or nineteenth-century inscription on title: B.V. Maria in F¸rstenfeld. Some early underlining and coloring of woodcuts in red. A few early ink marginalia. Housed in a custom quarter brown morocco clamshell case. The illustrations follow the schema of the Sacon Bibles printed in Lyons in 1518 and 1521. CrespinÃs blocks with the exception of the Creation are close copies of those used in Jacques and Jean MareschalÃs Lyons Bibles of 1523-1541 as is the layout of the text within ruled columns. Contemporary and later manuscript notations on front pastedown and rear flyleaf. Titlepage with neat marginal repairs some light stains. Very good. The first European-language Bible printed in America and the second Bible printed in America after John Eliot's Indian bibles of the 1660s. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the thirty-fourth edition of the Halle Bible with Book Three of Edras Book Four of Edras and Book Three of Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible. Believed to have been printed in an edition of 1200 copies of which slightly over one-tenth are known to have survived. Christoph Saur was a native of Wittgenstein Germany who settled in Germantown Pennsylvania and practiced medicine before turning to printing. 17636390Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain.
