Octavo bound in three quarters morocco with gilt titles to the spine title page vignette. In good condition with rubbing to the spine and extremities. Translated from the original languages and carefully corrected. Armenian Bibles hold a central place in both the religious and cultural history of Armenia reflecting the nation’s early adoption of Christianity and its enduring reverence for sacred literature. The first complete Armenian Bible printed in Amsterdam in 1666–1668 by Voskan Yerevantsi marked a monumental moment in Armenian print culture and linguistic preservation. Over the following centuries numerous editions emerged many produced by the Mekhitarist Congregation whose scholarly and publishing activity defined Armenian intellectual life in the diaspora. The Mekhitarist Congregation founded in the early 18th century was instrumental in preserving and publishing Armenian religious historical and linguistic works. Their Venice press became one of the most important centers for Armenian printing and scholarship producing Bibles grammars and classical Armenian literature for distribution across the diaspora. Hand colored lithograph from the deluxe edition of Robert's 'The Holy Land Syria Idumea Arabia' the greatest lithographically illustrated work of the 19th century. This hand tinted lithograph was produced by Louis Haghe the finest lithographic draughtsman of his time and probably colored by him in a very small edition. <br /> <br /> The image depicts a series of low white chapels at the top of Mount Sinai the sacred site to which God summoned Moses and the Israelites. Moses received the tablets with the Ten Commandments here descending and relaying the laws to the people. <br /> <br /> David Roberts 1796 - 1864 was a Scottish painter who traveled to Egypt in 1838 on the recommendation of his friend and colleague J. M. W. Turner. He went up the Nile River through Egypt and the Holy Land and arrived in Jerusalem in 1839. Roberts left from Beirut in May of 1839 having traveled through Lebanon.<br /> <br /> Roberts recorded his impressions of landscapes temples and people in a series of sketchbooks and watercolors and working with Haghe as lithographer produced these lavish plates. The 'Holy Land' issued over a period of 7 years from 1842 to 1849 was funded through advance subscriptions Queen Victoria being the first subscriber. <br /> <br /> Cut to the edge of the image and mounted on card in imitation of watercolors as issued. 13 3/4 x10"; card measures 21 3/4 x 16 3/4". With presentation inscription on front flyleaf: "Herbert Gardner Travers / from his Godmother / A. S. Burn / August 1891"; below this the ink-inscribed record of the recipient's marriage and the births of his children. Spine gently and uniformly sunned a shade lighter two hardly noticeable small abrasions to rear cover offsetting from turn-ins to free endpapers as almost always but still a fine copy in a remarkably handsome binding with few signs of use.<br/> <br/> The appealing binding on this treasured family Bible was created in Cambridge by Vere Stoakley who took over the workshop of J. Hawes on that craftsman's death in the late 1880s; he signed his work "Stoakley Late Hawes" to acknowledge this connection. The firm specialized in academic bindings to supply scholars from the university and continued in business until the 1920s. The present binding clearly is much more elaborate and beautiful than a simple scholar's binding and this is because it was a special gift presented to a beloved godson probably for his christening. Recipient Herbert Gardner Travers 1891-1958 grew up to be a decorated World War I flying ace who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his five aerial victories. After the Great War he worked in the airplane industry as a test pilot and flying instructor then became a commercial pilot in 1935. He returned to the Royal Air Force at the outset of World War II and was an acting squadron leader. As recorded on the flyleaf of his Bible he married Hermia Edith Margaretta Fraser in August 1919 and over the next 12 years they welcomed children Daphne 1920 Eva 1921 Elizabeth 1924 Christina 1926 and Edward 1931. The very feminine floral binding suggests that it was bound as a gift for Anne Robinson who used it very gently for her personal devotions--and no doubt as an attractive accessory to her Sunday church ensemble. The annotation of favorite passages offers insight into the owner's spiritual life and the inlaid handwritten "chain of title" is testament to our volume's status as family heirloom. Robinson and her successors clearly treasured it as it is little changed from the day it left the bindery. The condition is notably splendid here. The Bible has had an unprecedented influence on literature and history especially in the Western World where the Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed using movable type. According to the March 2007 edition of Time the Bible “has done more to shape literature history entertainment and culture than any book ever written. Its influence on world history is unparalleled and shows no signs of abating.†With estimated total sales of over 5 billion copies it is widely considered to be the most influential and best-selling book of all time. Attitudes towards the Bible also differ among Christian groups. First Te Reo Maori edition of The Book of Daniel and The Book of Jonah the second expanded issue with the addition of the seventh book of Daniel published by William Colenso 1811-1899 on the Church Missionary Society Press. The press was the second to arrive in Aotearoa in December 1834 and printed many important documents including the Treaty of Waitangi also printed in 1840. This edition was printed by William Colenso 1811-1899 an Anglican missionary and publisher from Penzance Cornwall also notable for his contributions to botany in New Zealand. Colenso famously recorded the speeches performed at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and would criticize the new government for taking advantage of language barriers to progress colonial interests. Colenso had little interest in government printing jobs recording in his diary "In January '40 H.M.S. Herald arrived in the Bay of Islands bringing Capt. Hobson R.N. who was our first Governor. Immediately on his arrival my hands were full to overflowing with extra printing for the new Govt. and that too in the English language for which I had no type cases and was therefore obliged to have the additional "sorts" of letters in little piles on tables and boxes and even on the floor" Manuscript at The National Library Wellington. This book is also notable as an early example of Te Reo Maori in print which was an almost entirely oral language before the 19th century. As the bibliographer Herbert Williams writes "the books printed for Maori particularly those which appealed to Maori most strongly were used and perished in the using." While early Bible translations in Te Reo Maori are often credited to Colenso Herbert Williams says that W. G. Puckey 1805-1878 made these translations stating that the original manuscript for this pamphlet was "dated 1836 at which date Colenso would hardly have been competent for the task" and that after inspecting the manuscript Puckey's son was confident it was in his father's handwriting. As well as being a skilled linguist Puckey was also an accomplished boatbuilder and carpenter who oversaw the construction of many early buildings in the Northland region. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey a gift of Christopher de Hamel auctioneer at Sotheby's Fellow of Corpus Christi Cambridge Roxburge Club Member and historian author of books about Bibles and illuminated manuscripts. In 1808 Dr. Paterson and Dr. Henderson who were visiting Torneå as delegates of the B.F.B.S. British and Foreign Bible Society reported the preparation of the Lapp Bible the Editio Princeps to the London Committee. ON hearing of the activities of the B.F.B.S. Bishop Nordin suggested that the Society should publish a separate edition of the N.T. The London Committee made a grant of 250l. towards this object; and under the care of the Evangelical Society of Stockholm which supplied the paper an edition … was printed with the same type as athe Bible of 1811 and issued concurrently with it. 1855ABC_47909London: William Watts 1855. Original elaborately embossed brown calf with the title lettered in gold on the spine red edges. 8vo 22 x 14 cm. Rare edition of one of the best Arabic translations of the Bible. This work is based on the 1671 version from Rome which was the first printed edition of the complete Bible in Arabic. However the version from 1671 was not vocalised written with vowel points but the present edition from London is.The Arabic translation of the Bible from 1671 was done under the direction of Sergius Risi d. 1638 the archbischop of Damascus. It had been requested by the Archbischop of Aleppo and other important figures from the Eastern Church as manuscript copies had become rare and were often found to be incorrect. Risi and his team compared the Arabic manuscripts of the Bible they had access to with Hebrew and Latin versions and then composed their own translation. They first completed the Arabic Pentateuch. The Old and New Testament followed in 1647 and 1650 respectively after Risi's passing. These translations were revised and then finally published in 1671. It was the only Arabic translation of the complete Bible until 1811. Numerous new translations were made in 19th century. The present Catholic edition of the Arabic Bible translation existed alongside the 1860 Protestant translation by Cornelius van Alen van Dyck.According to the title-page this edition of the Old Testament was printed in 1855. However none of the relevant reference works mention an 1855 edition. Since the title-page of the New Testament bears the year 1857 it is possible that the Old Testament was also printed in that year and the date on the title-page is a printing mistake. The 1857 edition is also fairly rare on the market as we have only been able to find it in 1 sales record of the past 100 years.With the label of Watkins' bookbinding factory mounted on the front pastedown and a purple Spanish stamp from the library of someone with a law degree on the final leaf. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed the binding is rubbed with some loss of material on the spine. The leaves are somewhat browned mild foxing throughout the back pastedown has a tear in the gutter.
