Contemporary unlettered red morocco spine gilt extra covers with gilt roll of vines at edges with oval black morocco central inlay with the sacred monogram and cross within a gilt sunburst a.e.g. marbled endsheets. Vertical crack in spine with shallow losses at crown and toe front binder's blank detached but present rear inner hinge cracking after free endsheet some wear to joints and forecorners; still a good internally fresh and crisp copy. An attractive octavo printing including the Apocrypha. Wright and Gill printed an edition in folio the same year. A highly likely association copy of some interest signed on the front binder's blank "Sarah S. Villiers 1804" probably Sarah Sophia Child-Villiers 1785-1867 Countess of Jersey and with the earlier signature of "Sarah Child 1779" her mother Sarah Anne Child 1764-1793. Sarah Childs married Lord Villiers on 23 May 1804. As heir to Child's Bank and to the property at Osterley Park she brought considerable resources to the marriage and was engaged as an active partner at the bank. She exerted influence in political circles and was prominent socially sufficient to provide models for fictional characters in novels by Disraeli and Lady Caroline Lamb. ESTC T91638. 1792WRCLIT76093London: Printed for Bellamy and Roberts 1792. Four volumes bound in six. Quarto. Contemporary unlettered calf marbled endsheets spines gilt. Plates and maps some folding. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. Small ink spot on A6 occasional marginal discolorations faint tidemark in upper outer quadrant 2b and shallower scattered discolorations along some fore-margins toward end clean marginal tear without loss in 2T3 short repairs to marginal tears in A1 early ink name on A1 and ink identification of "Brydges" on title; title possibly supplied from a slightly smaller copy; yet a good sound copy. First edition of this Latin version of the New Testament translated/edited by John Bridges Bishop of Oxford 1535/6 - 1618. After a career of publications on Church government engagement in pamphlet exchanges and similar matters Bridges began work on this rendering of the text into Latin hexameters in 1599. Melanchthon was a great supporter of Dolscius 152689 whose translation work was so proficient that at one point his authorial byline on the Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession was assumed to be merely a pseudonym for the great reformer himself.<br>Â Â Â Â The text here is simply printed with the Latin preface in roman and the main text in Greek using single columns; a 5-line decorative initial and a 7-line inhabited one showing two kings in profile complete the work. This is now an uncommon edition with searches of Worldcat COPAC USTC and NUC Pre-1956 revealing only three U.S. institutions reporting ownership.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: An inked ownership stamp of notable 19th-century English bibliomaniac Richard Heber 17741833 reading "Bibliotheca Heberiana" appears on the front free endpaper; Thomas Frognall Dibdin added this stamp to select rare books in Heber's collection following the collector's death. 1817FF2408Cambridge:: Printed by J. Smith 1817 1816. 1817. 2 volumes. Small 12mo. iv 600; 601-821 1 2; 250 2 pp. Original crimson blind- and gilt-stamped straight grained morocco all edges gilt. Within slip-case bound in red cloth gilt-stamped back "Foredge Paintings" likely the box dates from the time of the fore-edge painting. With two lovely fore-edge paintings painted on the fanned edges; not labeled but the scenes are of British churches. Provenance: Carnegie Book Shop New York Dec 14 1965 - sold to: Roland S. Bond Dallas TX. Probably this is the Louis H. Silver d.1963 Chicago copy sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries Nov. 16 1965 sold to Carnegie Book Shop NY. The volume was described as "one vol. bound in 2 which was an oversight as the 2nd title is deep within the second vol. Silver was a lawyer engineer and Chicago hotel owner Gold Coast Hotels who was a trustee of the Newberry Library. The bulk of his collection was purchased through his agent the noted bookseller John F. Fleming and brought a reported NY Times May 15 1964 price of 2.75 million dollars. / The University of Texas Ransom Center reports: "In June of 1963 Silver was diagnosed with terminal cancer and enlisted Fleming's help in selling his substantial library. Silver had very specific demands for the sale—his library was to be sold en bloc and he should receive no less than $2.2 million for it. Fleming made contact with several auction houses but on October 27 1963 Silver died before any action towards a sale could be completed. Silver's estate represented by Clarence A. Beutel and Silver's wife Amy wanted the search for a buyer to continue according to Silver's specifications. / On November 15 1963 the University of Texas at Austin expressed interest in the collection. Fleming began negotiations with Dr. Harry Ransom Chancellor of the University of Texas at Austin. Within a month Ransom had $2.75 million in cash for the sale. Silver's estate though was feeling hesitant about the sale. The first problem was that they did not want to pay Fleming his $200000 commission. The second was that they felt pressured to keep the Silver Library in Illinois by selling it to the Newberry Library instead. In the end that is what the estate chose to do. On May 13 1964 the Newberry Library bought the Silver Library for $2.75 million. / Under Illinois law Fleming as a property broker should have earned his commission when he produced a ready willing and able buyer. There is no requirement that a sale with that buyer must occur. Since Fleming produced his buyer he requested his commission. When the Silver estate refused Fleming filed a lawsuit in Illinois on August 6 1964. The estate was granted summary judgment and the case was dismissed. The court found that since many of the books were damaged and the University of Texas did not examine the books prior to agreeing to buy them it would not have actually been willing to commit to the sale. Fleming appealed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In John F. Fleming Incorporated v. Beutel 395 F.2d 21 the appellate court remanded the case after finding that the lower court was incorrect in granting summary judgment. The appellate court ruled that when one was dealing with older books some damage was par for the course and so the buyer would have been willing to go through with the sale. However rather than continue the court battle Fleming settled out of court for $92000 on December 17 1968. / The Newberry Library took possession of the Silver Library and against Silver's wishes discarded one third of the books as surplus and auctioned them." 181817093Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover books

A truly => unique copy this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge D.D. 18631916 a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts annotated of course.<br>Â Â Â Â Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" 1911 including the Hebrew psalms.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moiré silk spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above pressure-stamp on title-page call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle dust- or sometimes soot-soiled at edges and prone to chipping. Title inscribed by Christopher Harvey 15971663 Vicar of Clifton in the county of Warwick a later note mentions he was the editor. Later bookplate partly removed of Dr. Herman Blum historian of Philadelphia who established the The Blumhaven Library for his valuable collection. <br/><br/>Fifth edition of the Jean Frellon Latin Bible printed by Claude de Huchin in Lyon in 1567 immediately following an edition made the previous year; though it seems Claude de Huchin produced just these two editions for Jean Frellon. Claude de Huchin produced a Biblia Sacra for Antoine Vincent also in the year 1567 while Jean Frellon issued a sixth edition in 1568 seemingly on his own. This fifth Frellon edition resembles the former editions but has maps and other illustrations which were not in previous versions. As early as 1553 woodcut illustrations adorned Frellons editions of the New Testament. This is a rare edition of the Biblia Sacra oft overlooked and not found in the usual references. OCLC locates two copies at Universitatsbibliothek at Heidelberg OCLC no. 315584645 and Columbia University OCLC no. 83326666. The edition is recorded in French Books III & IV 2011: No. 57420. These bibles were all the rage in 16th century Lyonnais print houses; most editions issued one right after the other; for example there is an illustrated Latin Bible printed by Guliel Rovilium in Lyon also in 1567. In 1804 Carey first published a new edition of the quarto Bible from standing type and including the Apocrypha. A consummate promoter and bookseller Carey re-issued the Bible on a variety of paper stocks and with various numbers of engraved maps and plates over the next decade. An 1809 advertisement listed 34 variations of his "Family Bible" priced between $3.50 and $12 however none of those listed include more than 30 engraved maps and plates suggesting this issue with 50 engraved maps and plates and including the Old Testament New Testament Psalms Apocrypha and Brown's Concordance to be among the most deluxe version yet issued by Carey. 159939429Heidelberg: Ex officina Commeliniana 1599. 8vo 19.9 cm 7.75". 14 827 1 pp. Lacks interior blank only. <br><br>One of the last 16th-century interlinear editions of the Greek New Testament and Vulgate Latin as first presented in Plantin's monumental Royal Antwerp Polyglot Bible of 156972. The text is printed in Greek with the Vulgate in roman type inter-linearly; additionally there are decorative letters and head and tailpieces. When the Vulgate differs from the Greek its text is printed in the margin as a shouldernote and a literal Latin rendering by the great Spanish theologian Benedictus Arias Montanus a.k.a. Benito Arias Montano is printed in italics in the text. The Commelin device appears on the title-page which describes this printing as "Editio postrema multò quàm antehac emendatior."<br>Â Â Â Â Evidence of Readership: Marginal notes or accents in at least two early hands have been added in ink in two dozenplus places with one page used for scribbling and content ranging from a squiggle to a word to real notes; two Latin words and the publication date in Arabic numerals under the publisher's roman have been inked to the title-page.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Early calligraphic ownership note of "Dudley" dated 1843 on binder's blank; later ownership signature of E.F. Whitehouse with the shelfmark 354 and an acquisition note including the collectorly report "It was all to bits I had it bound and consider it a great curiosity. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Adams B1716; Darlow & Moule 4656a; VD16 ZV 1904; USTC 440704. Recent half brown calf and mustard buckram cloth red leather spine label lettered in gilt all edges speckled brown new endpapers; very gently rubbed one short tear at bottom gutter of binder's blank. Light age-toning and waterstaining of various darknesses throughout most of the text with the occasional spot. The title leaf has been backed with a later paper with no loss of content; interior blank only lacking as above three leaves with small interior holes affecting letters two leaves with marginal sections torn away. Readership and provenance evidence as above with some inked notes trimmed or bled onto surrounding leaves. => Read and engaged with by multiple people and all the more intriguing because of it. 192221208Chisinau Moldava Кишиневь: Protodeacon Anisim 1922. Hardcover. Good. 4to. Foliated. 59-188 ff. Thick boards covered in calf and decorated with nailheads. Frontispiece of King David writing. Contains the Psalms arranged in kathismata then two other sections follow. Printed in Old Slavonic in red and black throughout. The colophon states that Psalter is based on the 17th century work of Patriarch Joseph of Moscow. It was published by Protodeacon Anisim with the blessing of Old Believer Bishop Innocent in the summer of 1922. Innocent Usov Ivan Griforievich 1879-1942 was a publisher the founder of the Old Believer Herald and a fierce opposer of the Bolsheviks. In the early 1920's he became Metropolitan of Chisinau now in Moldava. This is well a well worn copy with some early repairs. The leather clasps have perished along with the spine tips. The final leaf is semi-detached. There are no free endpapers; perhaps there never were. Overall only a good copy of a scarce Orthodox Old Believer Psalter printed in the early years of the Soviet era. Protodeacon Anisim hardcover books

Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br>Â Â Â Â This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books. Raised bands on spines; spine panels tooled and lettered in blind. Unusual and attractive. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Smith 209; Hills 2155 for the 1904 edition and explanation of reissues.
