Variously given as Chahta Chactas Chato Tchakta Chocktaw or Chactaw Choctaw is a language of the Muskogean family spoken by Native Americans who originally lived in parts of Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana before being relocated to Oklahoma. This translation was done by two Presbyterian missionaries the Revs. Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington; the Book of a Thousand Tongues says that they were "substantially assisted by Joseph Dukes and W.H. McKinney educated Choctaws."<br>Â Â Â Â The Rev. Wright 17881853 spent over 30 years among the Choctaw people in Mississippi and Oklahoma. In their correct spot are bound 2 blank leaves. Old Testament and New Testament have separate title-pages. With a chart page after the Old Testament and after the New Testament. Bible is complete. Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards. Ink title to spine of each volume. Previous owner's bookplate and signature dated 1770 on front pastedown of each volume. Title-page of each volume with some old ink manuscript notes to top margin. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Some minor staining and wrinkling to bottom margin of signature Iii. Strand Kenneth "Saur German Bibles" Andrews University Studies Spring/Summer 1994 Vol. 32 Nos. 1-2 57-106.The second edition printed by Christopher Saur II the first edition having been published in 1743. Saur's family immigrated to Pennsylvania from Westphalia in 1724. Saur and his father advocated for Quaker causes via their printing activities in Pennsylvania. Saur was in charge of the bindery and of English language publications at his father's business. After his father's death Saur II continued to publish their newspaper their almanacs and their religious books bibles and hymnals etc. In 1773 Saur the II established a paper mill on the Schuylkill River which would greatly increase his wealth and standing in British America. However because of his later reluctance to participate in the American Revolution due to his Quaker beliefs Saur would have his house and properties sold off and died poor. This is the first Bible printed in any European language in the Continental United States. The 1763 edition eliminated Saur I's postface and included a new Foreword. 2000 copies of this second edition were printed. A Fair only example with significant loss to the spine and leather on the boards exposing the gatherings and the wood of the boards; lacks the first title page the free front endpaper the foreword the table of contents and the first page of the Old Testament; leaves show some dampstains and a few tiny tears. This is an interesting copy in an elaborate prize binding and including a specially printed singleton presentation leaf bearing an engraved vignette of the Amsterdam City arms and eleven lines of boilerplate letterpress with the variables executed in manuscript: in this case in 1760 to one "Joanni Meyer" signed in ink by the examiner. Mill's text accompanied by its "Prolegomena" described by D&M as "monumental" is "perhaps the most famous Greek Testament of the eighteenth century" - D&M 4725. An attractive copy. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued Bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk-Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each of the leaves the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. <br> <br> The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated Bibles included in the collection. The plates and maps are outstanding and the physical feat of printing all seventeen volumes in 6 years is astonishing. Complete sets in commerce are surprisingly scarce though widely held by institutions. William Wrightson 1752-1827 of Cusworth Hall Doncaster Yorkshire was a former member of Parliament 1784-1790; his son of the same name lived 1789-1879; it is unclear which person's bookplate the name refers. Brownlow North 1741-1820 former owner family member was appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1781. DNB. More recently a pencil note within the book indicates it was purchased from Leamington Book Shop July 1953. Slight wear.<br/> <br/>A fine copy of the first edition of the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut complete with the separate title page for the New Testament.<br/> <br/>On October 18 1809 an announcement in the "Connecticut Courant" now known as the Hartford Courant read: "Hudson and Goodwin have the satisfaction to announce to the public that they have this day completed their first edition of the School Bible. The type is entirely new imported at heavy expense.and the paper is so good a quality that it is asserted with confidence to be the best of the kind offered for sale in this country." Henry Hudson a partner in the Hudson and Goodwin publishing firm which was also the publisher of the Connecticut Courant was the secretary of the newly-formed Connecticut Bible Society at the time. Small octavo 6 3/8 x 4 inches; 162 x 102 mm. Printed on India Paper. x 586; ii 188 pp. Thirteen folding maps or plans some with colored outlines five folding.<br/><br/>Contemporary purple velvet binding ca. 1844 with gilt board edges and clasps stamped "Bagster" upper cover with gilt onlay engraved "Polyglot Bible / English Version". Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. He was denounced to the Inquisition for liberality. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Campbell's translation of the Gospels were first printed in the U.S. in 1796 and was the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America. Folio extra 37 cm; 14.5". 4 ff. 1098 pp. lacks final leaf with colophon. <br><br>Thought to have been edited by Franciscus Junius or Friedrich Sylburg this complete Greek Bible is based on the Basel edition of 1545 with corrections from the Complutensian and other texts including for the New Testament that of Robert Estienne. The woodcut printer's device appears on the title-page. The main text is printed in double-column format with some handsome woodcut initials and headpieces. Both boards with loss of leather and roughly replaced. Front board detached in past and resecured with a linen hinge inside and a leather spine repair; hinge at rear with same strenthening. Early leaves crumpled some later ones as well. A few leaves have irregular fore-margins. Title-page stained and with old library stamp and shelving label; reverse of same with rubber stamp.
