Text in italic headlines and chapter headings in roman; printed marginalia. Later pigskin over bevelled boards tooled in blind brass clasps one of two and catches manuscript title at spine. Extensive old manuscript notes at front endleaf and four blank leaves at the end including the two integral blanks; occasional marginalia and underlining. Title soiled with some slight erosion at margin from oxidation of the clasps else a very good copy with clean fresh text throughout. Complete with the two final blank leaves.

Second Gryphius edition and a rather uncommon early sixteenth-century printing of Erasmus’ Latin translation of the New Testament first published at Basel in 1516. According to Baudrier Ly. V. 804101/Cat. de Lignerolles Paris Porquet 1894 no. 48 Gryphius first published this translation in 1542 and 1543 as a 16mo of 847 pages; neither of these issues appear in Deleveau & Hillard. Like the present edition these early Gryphius printings of the Erasmus New Testament survive in only a handful of copies. The text opens with Erasmus' dedication to pope Leo X followed by his preface to the reader a general index of the New Testament corpus a listing of the chapters of the four Gospels and a brief passage from Jerome's catalogue of ecclesiastical writings. The editor's introductions precede each book. The text concludes with Erasmus' translation of a brief discussion of apocryphal literature partly from Athanasius though Erasmus questions the attribution: "De libris utriusque testamenti partim reiectus aut non sine contradictione admissis partim apocryphis ex Athanasio tametsi mihi suspectus est titulus."

Provenance and annotations: Extensive early annotations in more than one hand appear throughout the book; many marginal notes have been added throughout the Gospel of Matthew. At the front of the book beginning with the free endleaf: "Poeta de Pythogora" several stanzas in Latin and Greek; facing the title: A morning prayer "Oro matutina lecturis oracula divina" 11 lines; an accounting of biblical eras 10 lines since Abraham David and the Babylonian Exile appears at the verso of the title leaf. The final blank page the two intergral blank leaves and two additional blanks added by the binder are filled with notes in several different hands including: a passage from Augustine's De doctrina christianae 14 lines; noted as book 2 chapters 11 and 12 along with four lines about Tertullian; four pages of notes on the twelve disciples numbered; a Greek text discussing the divine names in which the tetragrammaton is written in Hebrew letters; a passage from a letter of Basilius Magnus in Greek with Latin translation.

Printed label of Edward Davis Hoblyn 1809-1881 and his manuscript entry dated 1831 at the free endleaf. Edward was likely related to the renowned book collector Robert Hoblyn 1710-1756 of Cornwall. A catalogue of Robert’s collection was printed in 1768 as Bibliotheca Hobliniana and reissued by Murray in 1769 with a new titlepage. The library remained with Robert’s widow and was sold in 1778. The present work is not listed in the Bibliotheca though no fewer than nineteen 16th-century Latin Bibles and Testaments appear in the catalogue. Gift inscription of D. N. 1855ABC_47909London: William Watts 1855. Original elaborately embossed brown calf with the title lettered in gold on the spine red edges. 8vo 22 x 14 cm. Rare edition of one of the best Arabic translations of the Bible. This work is based on the 1671 version from Rome which was the first printed edition of the complete Bible in Arabic. However the version from 1671 was not vocalised written with vowel points but the present edition from London is.The Arabic translation of the Bible from 1671 was done under the direction of Sergius Risi d. 1638 the archbischop of Damascus. It had been requested by the Archbischop of Aleppo and other important figures from the Eastern Church as manuscript copies had become rare and were often found to be incorrect. Risi and his team compared the Arabic manuscripts of the Bible they had access to with Hebrew and Latin versions and then composed their own translation. They first completed the Arabic Pentateuch. The Old and New Testament followed in 1647 and 1650 respectively after Risi's passing. These translations were revised and then finally published in 1671. It was the only Arabic translation of the complete Bible until 1811. Numerous new translations were made in 19th century. The present Catholic edition of the Arabic Bible translation existed alongside the 1860 Protestant translation by Cornelius van Alen van Dyck.According to the title-page this edition of the Old Testament was printed in 1855. However none of the relevant reference works mention an 1855 edition. Since the title-page of the New Testament bears the year 1857 it is possible that the Old Testament was also printed in that year and the date on the title-page is a printing mistake. The 1857 edition is also fairly rare on the market as we have only been able to find it in 1 sales record of the past 100 years. With the label of Watkins' bookbinding factory mounted on the front pastedown and a purple Spanish stamp from the library of someone with a law degree on the final leaf. The edges and corners of the boards are somewhat scuffed the binding is rubbed with some loss of material on the spine. The leaves are somewhat browned mild foxing throughout the back pastedown has a tear in the gutter. 16017682Londini London: Impensis G.Bishop. 1601. Folio pp. xlii 378 381-914 10. 20th-century half sheep pebbled cloth boards spine divided by raised bands black morocco label. Title-page trimmed and mounted final leaf also mounted a few smaller repairs to early leaves small wormhole in blank margin some foxing and occasional light marginal dampstaining. Spine rather rubbed and darkened and sometime furbished worn at ends and joints just starting to crack at head. The second edition of Fulke’s tendentious and influential comparison of the Douay-Rheims and Bishops’ translations of the New Testament with his notes and commentary intended to refute the arguments on which the former version was based. Fulke’s work with the two texts in parallel columns the Catholic in roman type and the Church of England version in italic sold better in England than the Douai Bible ever had bringing its language to a wider readership and becoming indirectly responsible for its influence on the coming King James version. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'. Provenance: With the bookplate of James Leonard Jackson 1777-1854 rector at St. Mary's Church Swanage; presented by him to a male member of the Calcraft family of Wareham most likely John Hales Calcraft 1796-1880 Member of Parliament for Wareham. A choice copy of the third English edition of the Greek Septuagint printed by John Field at Cambridge bound uniformly - in handsome seventeenth-century sombre bindings - with Field's companion New Testament in Greek a reprint of the Thomas Buck edition Cambridge 1632 and the 1650 first edition of the Scottish Metrical Psalter. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England was published by Roger Daniel 1653 with the second appearing in Walton's Polyglot edition of 1657. This edition published by John Field Printer to Cambridge University is also the first to contain the praefatio paraenetica of J. Pearson. Issued in two slight variant forms with differing Greek titles this is the issue without the Apocrypha. The presence of the Scottish Psalter printed by Evan Tyler of Edinburgh at the end of the final of these three volumes combined with the later Scottish provenance makes this cataloguer wonder if these volumes were used - and perhaps even bound - in Scotland.
