Attractive New Testament in the Zurich version printed for domestic use preciously and splendidly bound in a much sought-after Zurich Vermeil binding fine chased goldplated silver over wooden boards. This N.T. is a typical example out of one of the roughly thirty editions printed in Zurich during the 18th century. It is remarkable that Ambrosius Lobwasser 1515-1584 as a Lutheran thereby paved the way for Calvinist liturgical songs in German speaking countries cf. MGG VIII 1075 by using for his metrical psalms the Geneva book of Psalms prepared by Marot and Beza between 1532 and 1560. His object was to popularize in Germany the melodies of the French Psalter of the beauty of which he had received a deep impression during a long sojourn in Berry; and thus he adhered to the texts which served as channels for these melodies in order that the meter and versification might accord with the French model. The book is housed in an attractive contemporary Zurich binding. Zurich was the most important place of manufacture for Vermeil bindings and shows the design that was common there at this time. Forming a wide frame on both covers and the back it is composed of leafy scroll- and lattice-work with flower and ornamental depictions. In the center of both covers is a small pelican engraved as a symbold for Jesus Christ or as a sign of mercy or possibly an owner sign. This binding is uncommon in that the silver cagework extends round the edges of the covers.- The work shows considerable craftsmanship and is in pristine and fine condition. - Not in VD 18 nor Darlow/Moule; cf. Published immediately after the ratification of the Bill of Rights the folio edition arguably his magnum opus opens with a note from Thomas situating it as an important accompaniment to this national development: "The civil authority hath set an example of moderation and candor to all Christians by securing equal privileges to all; and it must be their ardent and united wish independently of foreign aid to be supplied with copies of the sacred Scriptures the foundation of their Religion - a religion which furnishes motives to the faithful performance of every patriotic civil and social duty."<br /> <br /> In preparing the work Thomas compared the language of "not less than eight" significant English Bibles most but not all of which were printings of the King James translation and then had every page of the present edition examined by "the Clergymen of Worcester and . other capable persons." <br /> <br /> In keeping with his patriotism all the plates are by American engravers an expensive undertaking: the majority by Joseph Seymour with others by John Norman Samuel Hill and Amos Doolittle. It is unusual to find complete copies with all fifty plates. The plate list often lacking is present in this copy. With the armorial bookplate of Hendrik Gerardsz. van Couwenhoven 1711-1792 and a short handwritten genealogy of Couwenhoven's family from Couwenhoven's marriage in 1738 to the birth of this last child in 1766. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. Contemporary English full dark blue straight-grained morocco. Covers with two gilt borders surrounding blind-stamped Greek key design. Board-edges decorated in blind elaborate gilt decorated turn-ins gray liners and endleaves all edges gilt. Gift signature to front flyleaf in volume one dated 1841 and a tipped-in square of paper with another nineteenth century gift inscription. Some light scuffing to the boards otherwise near fine.<br /> <br /> A spectacular example of the large paper edition this Bible sometimes called the "Killer Bible" for its typographical error in Mark 7 verse 27: "Let the children be killed" rather than "filled." It was richly illustrated by James Fittler 1758-1835 an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The printer Thomas Bentley produced large editions for Thomas Macklin Rudolph Ackermann and Paul Colnaghi all publishers of plate books; he also printed several of the earliest books for the Roxburghe Club.<br /> <br /> ESTC lists three editions of the Bowyer and Fittler Bible: this one which ESTC describes as the large paper edition; the regular two-volume quarto edition also 1795; and a: two-volume twelvemo edition 1796 which was issued in parts. A very good copy in original beveled boards.</p><p><strong>Description:</strong> There are several clippings pertaining to this edition of the Bible mounted on the front pastedown. Printed general title page 1743 laid down with loss to the lower border and imprint which have been replaced in facsimile. Ornamental headpiece at the beginning of Genesis. Text in two column black letter with cross references and short summaries at the beginning of each chapter. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the 34th edition of the Halle Bible with books three and four Esra and three Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible. The present copy has "parallelen" spelled correctly a second issue of the title had this word misspelled as "parllelen" as it was made in haste. Printed New Testament title page 1743. Ornamental headpiece at the beginning of Matthew. Sometime expertly rebacked with the original spine laid on. A portion of one strap perished with the original hasp and other strap remaining. Binding chipped in various places but nicely restored.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> Some dampstaining in places most prevalent to first few leaves; some toning occasional soiling and spotting as typical; small hole to final leaf with loss of a few letters; a few instances of shaved catchwords in places; introductory leaf remargined with loss of a few letters to margins.</p><p><strong>Note: </strong>1200 copies of this Bible were printed by Christopher Saur. He was a man of conviction in matters of morality and religion and he sought to produce a Bible that his fellow Germans could read in their native tongue. He appealed to Germany where Dr. Heinrich Luther provided him with the type in exchange for a presentation copy. It took him three years to complete the printing of the Bible. Saur made every effort to promote the reading of the Scriptures. His asking price was eighteen shillings but his quoted as saying that "to the poor and needy we have no price." Housed in a fine modern brown morocco felt-lined clamshell box. First two works with extra engraved illustrated title page. For the binding: Hayward "Silver Bindings from the J. R. Abbey Collection" 14. Sharkskin with just a hint of chafing occasional mild browning or foxing to leaves but QUITE A FINE COPY clean and fresh internally and the binding shining and unworn.<br/> <br/> Beautifully executed and wonderfully preserved this New Testament is an excellent example of the vermeil bindings--that is silver-gilt or gilded/gilt silver--produced in Switzerland and southern Germany during the Baroque period. As is typical this binding is without a hallmark but it closely resembles another New Testament bound in shagreen and vermeil described and pictured as item #14 in Hayward's "Silver Bindings from the J. R. Abbey Collection" which Hayward indicates was produced in Zurich in the early 18th century. These intricate silver bindings were popular for religious works presenting what Hayward calls a "combination of ostentatious wealth and piety" and this one was executed with great skill featuring graceful lines and delicately rendered details. There are two main types of silver bindings from the period: engraved and pierced bindings like the present example which were especially popular in the 17th century; and embossed or repoussé bindings which came into fashion in the late 17th and early 18th century. INNOVATIVE AND HIGHLY UNUSUAL SCOTTISH CHIPPENDALE ROCOCO BINDINGS COMBINING CHINOISERIE AND NEOCLASSICAL ELEMENTS EXHIBITING THE INDEPENDENCE OF SCOTTISH WORK AT THIS TIME. <br /> <br /> The present example is a striking hybrid of late 18th-century decorative art in Britain the likes of which we have not encountered hitherto. Here "oriental" birds and peacocks are juxtaposed with patriotic depictions of Britannia uncharacteristically surmounted by a fleur-de-lis bold anchors columns sunbursts dripping garlands flowers sheaves of wheat and urns. Presented in the Chippendale style the present binder who is as yet unnamed introduces rococo ornaments while enclosing all of the above with an unmistakably neoclassical greek-key roll. <br /> <br /> EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY ROCOCO BINDINGS OF THIS QUALITY ARE RARE PARTICULARLY THOSE EXECUTED IN SCOTLAND. <br /> <br /> Rococo book arts in Scotland have been almost completely unexplored on account of the paltry number of examples with which we are able to study. Robert Adam's designs for the bindings of his "Ruins of Spalatro" 1764 is a bold statement of the neoclassical for he was justly celebrated. But we now know that Adam was not exclusively "Grecian." David Pullins' heroic archival research in Sir John Soane's Museum has shown that Adam received three previously unexamined commissions for a seemingly antithetical kind of decoration which he calls "neoclassical chinoiserie" specifically Adam's drawings for an unrealized chinoiserie looking-glass dated 1769 for Edwin Lascelles 1st Earl of Harewood. Occasional minor foxing stains and thumbing N5 with five-inch curving tear into text no loss two plates with old six- to seven-inch tears into image one mended on verso with discolored cellotape a handful of other minor tears but still a pleasing copy internally generally quite clean and fresh.<br/> <br/> At 5 1/4" thick and with a lavish overall decorative design this is a memorable specimen of a German post-fanfare binding very likely produced as a wedding gift for the couple whose initials appear on the cover. Support for this supposition resides in the binding's quotations from German Scripture traditionally used at Lutheran weddings: Genesis 2:18 "And the Lord God said It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helpmeet for him" and Colossians 3:14 "But above all these things clothe yourselves in love which is the bond of perfection". A perfect family Bible for a young couple of high degree this handsomely illustrated edition is known as the "Kurfürstenbibel" because of its portraits of the Electoral Princes called "Kurfürsten" in German. Such a Bible was originally prepared for Ernst I Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg as a celebration of Martin Luther's Bible translation. The Endters one of the prominent German printing families issued several printings of it beginning in 1641 and continuing to the end of the 18th century. In addition to portraits of Luther and the Protestant princes of Germany it contains the maps views and illustrated half-titles by Jacob van Sandrart and others first used in the edition of 1686. Like the Boydell "Shakespeare Gallery" also printed by Bensley our Macklin Bible is a vast picture book with illustrations that are grand both in size and emotional impact. According to DNB Macklin 1752/3-1800 announced his intention to produce a lavishly illustrated luxuriously produced folio Bible in 1789 and he spent the next 11 years and £30000 making his dream a reality. His efforts paid off: "the subscription list for 703 copies at £46 1s. apiece was headed by the king the queen and the prince of Wales." Sadly Macklin died just five days after the last engraving was finished and did not live to see his masterpiece become one of the most acclaimed English Bibles. As DNB observes "The Macklin Bible endures as the most ambitious edition produced in Britain often pirated but never rivalled." Copies of the Macklin Bible were often put into ornate bindings as was the present set; despite the depradations of time the workmanship of a superior London binder remains apparent. T. Three rounds of restoration are evident the most recent carefully documented a fourth round required. Herbert 942A: "A magnificent edition printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books engraved on steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved. Unfortunately the book contained many misprints and earned the nickname 'A Baskett-ful of Errors'. From the misprint The Parable of the Vinegar for vineyard in the headline above Luke xx this edition is commonly known as the 'Vinegar Bible'." Thomas' quarto bible was published in three distinct issues: with 2 copperplates only i.e. frontispieces to the Old and New Testaments; with two copperplates and John Brown's 89-page concordance in the rear; and the rarest and most deluxe form as here with 48 copperplates and the concordance. Of this last issue according to Thomas's catalogue the work was published "in elegant binding." The explanation for the work being complete with 48 plates rather than the 50 plates of the folio Thomas bible of the same year is easily explained: the frontispieces used for the folio bible plates I and XXXIII were too large for the quarto edition and thus were omitted with plates XXIX and XLVIII used as frontispieces of the quarto bible instead.<br /> <br /> A very difficult edition to find in a contemporary unsophisticated binding. Despite the general title page and the NT title page being Berwick/John Taylor extremely likely the Philadelphia printing with a cancel title page the first folio Bible and first illustrated Bible printed in the US. The bibliography on this is complex: the earliest copies were issued with a Philadelphia title page but as this came out in subscribed parts over the course of two years 1788-1790 those sent out before late May of 1790 would likely have had a Philadelphia title page and those sold after that date would have a false UK title page as does our copy; the Congressional rule called for strict oversight of the printing of any Bible in the United States to get around this the publishers of this Bible substituted a phony UK title page. This conforms to Hills no 16 The English Bible in America by Margaret Hills; see also Sabin 12929. Measuring 16.5 x 10.5 in original leather binding with red morocco spine label fair condition at best binding heavily worn boards detached and worn along edges contents good: minor institutional marks include bookplate withdawal stamps embossed stamp of institution in four places text good to very good has 28 plates including frontispiece. Toning and minor stains to pages contents generally very good. A few plates have marginal spotting and stains the plate of the Crucifixion has 3 inch repaired tear extending down into the margin but not the image and the frontispiece has two marginal tears quite reparable. Large chunk from the last plate in Acts taking away the top two inches of the upper right corner of the image. Contents generally good to very good as are the plates. We've done absolutely no repairs or restoration in order to give buyers the opportunity to bind it as they see fit. Housed in specially sized cardboard clamshell box. Marbled endsheets and pastedowns. Some minor wear to corners. Some foxing to the plates. A few small dampstains. Some wear to backstrips and boards. The Macklin Bible is the largest Bible printed on a letterpress. Published serially between 1791 and 1800 in London this project was of one several ambitious projects that commissioned paintings of literary subjects exhibited them at their premises and sold engravings and/or editions of the relevant text including the engravings after the paintings by subscription. These 'literary galleries' sought to be both commercial printselling projects for the proprietors and to foster British history painting aligning with the ambitions of the Royal Academy to encourage a native school of painting in this genre. The foremost literary gallery was Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery which operated between 1789 and 1805.<br /> <br /> In addition to its 70 full-page plates the Bible includes head and tailpieces for each biblical book - 113 in total. All but two of the vignettes were designed by Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg who also painted 16 pictures for the full-page plates. The full-page plates and headpiece and tailpiece vignettes were published by Macklin and the text was printed for Macklin by Thomas Bensley. The type was cut by Joseph Jackson and Vincent Figgins Jackon's apprentice. The paper was made by Whatman. Slight variations in color of the leather Ffff8 with lower corner torn away not affecting engraving occasional faint offsetting but AN EXTREMELY CLEAN FRESH COPY in a binding bright with gilt.<br/> <br/> This impressively bound Swedish Bible was a baptism gift that clearly would have outweighed its recipient as Swedish law at the time required an infant be baptized within the first eight days of life. Although hardly practical for personal devotion and study the majestic tome was a treasured heirloom passed down in the same family for 200 years. The beautiful fanfare style seen here emerged in France in the 16th century but remained very popular in Northern Europe into the 18th century particularly for large "lectern" Bibles like the present item. The text here is an extensively annotated edition of the 1618 Gustave II Adolf Bible prepared by a father and son both named Johannes Gezelius who served successively as Bishop of Åbo. The New Testament was first printed in that city in 1711-13 the Old Testament in Stockholm in 1724-28. In our copy the New Testament is a 1752 reprinting. 179168436Very Rare Early American Edition of a ChildrenÃs Pocket Bible BIBLE IN ENGLISH. The Holy Bible Abridged: Or the History of the Old and New Testament. Illustrated with Notes and Adorned with Cuts. For the Use of Children. Two lines from Luke. Boston: Samuel Hall 1791. Early American edition and first Samuel Hall edition second Boston edition. There were only a total of five Children's bibles published in America before 1791. The First American edition was printed in Boston in 1782 by Robert Hodge for N. Coverly followed by a Worcester Massachusetts 1786 edition by Isaiah Thomas 1786 and 1788 Philadelphia editions and a 1790 New York edition. Our present copy was published the year after the New York edition. Thirtytwomo 4 1/8 x 2 3/4 inches; 104 x 67 mm. 4 vii-ix 8 18-173 1 pp. With frontispiece of Adam and Eve and fifty-nine crude but charming woodcuts illustrations depicting stories from the text meant to appeal to young children. The stories that have been abridged for use in this Bible generally consist of the more well- known stories which would be of interest to children such as Creation Adam & Eve and Jonah and the Whale from the Old Testament as well as the birth baptism and crucifixion of Jesus from the New Testament. Listed in Evans but not in Sabin. We could find no copies of this edition at auction and only one copy found at the Massachusetts Historical Society. All early American editions are rare and only two complete copies of the New York 1790 edition since 1976. There was the 1786 Worcester edition at auction in 2008 but it was incomplete. Contemporary marbled paper over boards repacked with matching paper. Inner hinges strengthened. Bound without endpapers. Some soiling and toning throughout. One leaf page 145 with some fraying to the edges not affecting text. Overall very good particularly for a childrenÃs book. The rarity of this book can somewhat be contributed to its very small size and that it was intended for the use of children. Something as delicate and tiny as this Bible in the hands of a child had little hope for a bright future. ìBy 1789 Bible story collections specifically for children had existed in the mother country for nearly a century an active market in the American colonies had not opened up. Neither American Protestants nor American Catholics of whom were growing in numbers seemed ready to give Bible stories to their children. In the 1780Ãs the American situation changed radically. Boston printers pirated NewberyÃs Holy Bible Abridged; in 1786 the astute Worcester printer Isaiah Thomas followed suit; and by 1815 The Holy Bible Abridged had been printed in urban and provincial print centers all over the America northeast.î The Bible for Children: From the Age of Gutenberg to the Present. Housed in a brown buckram chamois-lined chemise and matching slipcase. New Testament with extra engraved title page with image of St. John his eagle and a lamb printer's device on printed title tailpiece at end of text; Psalms with extra engraved title page depicting David with his harp printed title with small vignette of the same scene; Festivals with engraved title page showing the Last Supper. Nap of velvet mostly gone except down the middle of the spine endpapers and the edges of first and last few leaves with numerous small rust spots apparently caused by the covers' metal frame and studs otherwise fine inside and out. An excellent example of a very unusual binding.<br/> <br/> With distinguished provenance this is a dramatic binding that makes a memorable display with engraved and pierced steel strapwork forming a lace-like pattern studded with faceted bosses that at first glance appear to be gems. Our volume has a general resemblance to the best of the small silver bindings produced during the Baroque period; its wonderfully executed foliate scrolls are reminiscent of a German binding described and pictured as item #15 in Hayward's "Silver Bindings from the J. R. Abbey Collection." However we have been unable to locate another example that strongly resembles ours. While not silver it is nevertheless a luxury binding--the engraving with its exquisite detail was done by a skilled hand and the materials themselves would have come at a price since before the Bessemer process of the 1850s steel was difficult to produce and consequently expensive. We do not know for whom this remarkable binding was originally made but we do know that it has more recently resided in two important American collections. Prior to 1955 it was in the library of Saul Cohn whose collection was sold at Parke-Bernet on April 26 of that year this was lot #67. Following that it was part of the illustrious collection of Cincinnati businessman arborist and philanthropist Cornelius J. Hauck 1893-1967 whose fortune was made in the family brewery; the auction of his library at Christie's in 2006 totaled more than $12.4 million this was lot #362 selling for $3120. De vier hoeken en de kettingklampen zijn voorzien van afbeeldingen van lezende personen de sloten met Mozes en Aäron. In de binnenzijde van het bovenste slot zijn de letters G.E.D. gegraveerd in het onderste slot staat het jaar 1785. Het zilverwerk op kerkboeken diende als statussymbool aan de band kon men de stand en rijkdom van een kerkganger aflezen. De Staphorster Bijbels werden vaak aan een koord of aan een ketting gedragen en behoorden bij de streekdracht voor de zondag. De zware zilveren ketting van dit exemplaar geeft aan dat deze het eigendom was van een vermogend persoon de mindere stand droeg de Bijbel aan een blauw koord of in geval van rouw een zwart koord. So-called ""Staphorster chain bible"" containing the Old and New Testament the Psalms and Hymns and the Forms interleaved with page-size Biblical prints. Attractive binding bound in black gauffered leather decorated with silver and gilt-edged text block. Remarkable on this copy are the thick and heavy silver chain and the heavy silver clasps. The four corners and the chain holders are decorated with images of reading people the locks with Moses and Aaron. On the inside of the upper lock are the letters G.E.D. engraved in the lower lock the year 1785. The silver work on church books was seen as a status symbol; the binding showed the social class and wealth of a churchgoer. The Staphorst Bibles were often worn around the wrist on a rope or chain and belonged to the traditional costume for Sunday. The heavy silver chain of this copy points out that it was the property of a wealthy person; the lower class wore the Bible on a blue rope or in the case of mourning a black rope.
