Covers very lightly scuffed with mild traces of wear at extremities; upper joint just starting at top; occasional touches of mild mostly marginal foxing. A very good or better copy complete and handsomely bound.<br /> <br /> An uncommon and beautifully printed edition of the Book of Common Prayer "the first single manual of worship in a vernacular language directed to be used universally by and common to both priest and people" Carter and Muir. Despite early revisions and some major alterations following the Restoration the original simplicity of the language has been presevered the text remaining substantially unaltered since 1662. Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: <br/><br/>"Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." <br/><br/>Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere.<br/><br/>The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish.<br/><br/>That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself.<br/><br/>John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

With 2 engr. figured frontispieces and 1 large head-piece by Johann Rudolf Holzhalb; inserted are 150 and 100 num. engr. plates by Weigel after Luyken from his "Celebriores Veteris Novi Testamenti iconibus" 1712. 8 leaves 22 pp. "Heilsamer Unterricht" 6 leaves index 292 130 pp. 1 leaf 146 recte 144 pp.; title 182 66 118 pp. 371 pp. Folio. Contemp. calf spines in 6 compartments with 2 labels some skilful repairs to corners and spine ends somewhat rubbed. Zurich Conrad Orell and Comp. 1755-56. First edition of the so-called "Ulrich-Bibel" an important new version of the Zurich bible. The editor was pastor at Grossmüster and was close to Pietism. This edition is one of the most carefully edited Bibles and comes with regard to the beauty of the printing close to that of Froschauer's publication. The text is based on the 1667 and 1724 editions; it was revised and adapted to the more wide-spread use of modern high German. Johann Caspar Ulrich 1705-1768 was in charge under the supervision of the Church Council. In the "Kurze Anzeige" at the beginning Johann Konrad Nüscheler gives a bibliography of Zurich bibles. Together with Johann Rudolf Ziegler he was also involed in the text revision. Illustrations were not originally planned but since many buyers regretted the lack of images as they were used in the Froschauer bibles so the publisher offered illustrations separately for sale which are often different to those in this present copy. The two pompous frontispieces by J. H. Holzhalb and the large head-piece to the dedication are original parts of the edition. In addition this copy is embellished with the engravings of Christian Weigel after Jan and Caspar Luyken originally published at Nuremberg as a plate work mounted and inserted. Each plate bears a four-line Latin and German epigram by the poet Samuel Faber 1657-1716 beneath the image. - Lacking Weigel's engr. title and plate 37 in the Old Testament and plates 101-108 in the New Testament. - Old name on flyleaf in vol. The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . Included are 200 pages of Tables Apocrypha and Family Records Index etc. The subscription price was $7 but half the price could be paid in wheat rye Indian corn butter or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. A rare early American bible advertised as the "first American pocket bible" being Young's second edition of the bible complete with metrical psalms following his edition from a different setting of 1790 Evans 22345; Hills 25. That bible was advertised for sale by Young in Dunlap's American Daily Advertise in May 1791 as "lately published" at the price of "6-1/2 dollars cash and 7 if entered on account." Although both that bible and the present edition are duodecimo the former is larger in both height and width and the 1791 advertisement continues by noting that "An edition of the Bible in pocket size is now in the press." The present Bible would be advertised in Philadelphia newspapers in September and October 1792 as "now in the press the first American edition of the Pocket Bible . printed on fine paper with good type." <br /> <br /> Small-format American bibles published less than a decade after the Aitken bible are rare and this would appear to be the smallest bible in English published in America to date. Because the sheets were sold unbound it is possible that they were issued as parts. 31 leaves from the Apocrypha E4 through I2 are misbound into Volume IV. In their correct spot are bound 2 blank leaves. Old Testament and New Testament have separate title-pages. With a chart page after the Old Testament and after the New Testament. Bible is complete. Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards. Ink title to spine of each volume. Previous owner's bookplate and signature dated 1770 on front pastedown of each volume. Title-page of each volume with some old ink manuscript notes to top margin. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Some minor staining and wrinkling to bottom margin of signature Iii. Overall very good or better copy. Just two years after Joseph Bentham published this present copy his Bible of 1762 was marked the "standard edition" according to Darlow & Moule. Herbert 1131. When first published in 1743 Saur's bible was the first bible in a European language to be published in America and just the second Bible printed in America after John Eliot's Indian Bibles of the 1660s. Titles darkened and dusty; very occasional light foxing or oxidation spots; dampstain at bottom quarter of the first twenty and final four leaves in the first volume else a nearly fine wide-margined set crisp and uncut.<br /> <br /> First edition and the "earliest attempt to provide a critical edition of the Hebrew Scriptures on a large scale†D&M and a notable early example of a large-scale scholarly project which attracted international financial and scholarly support. The biblical scholar Benjamin Kennicott 1718-1783 was educated at Oxford and "instructed in Hebrew by Professor Thomas Hunt and the greater part of his life was spent in the collation of Hebrew manuscripts with the object of producing a definitive original text of the Old Testament. Robert Lowth always his major patron first inspired him with a desire to test the accuracy of the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. With his formidable knowledge of Syriac early Latin the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch it was recognized that he was very well qualified for the task. His critical examination of manuscripts initially in the British Museum and the libraries of Oxford and Cambridge began in 1751 and when Thomas Secker then bishop of Oxford and also a member of Exeter College urged him in March 1758 to undertake their collation he agreed to the request. In return Secker when archbishop of Canterbury gave Kennicott his unstinting support and friendship when for a time he nurtured a project for producing a revised Authorized Version of the Bible. Meanwhile in 1753 Kennicott issued The State of the Printed Hebrew Text of the Old Testament Considered: a Dissertation and in 1759 he brought out a second dissertation on the same subject. He identified his object thus: to compare Scripture with itself to explain a difficult phrase or passage by a clear one that bears some relation to it to consider the natural force of the Original Words the tendency of the Context and the Design of the Writer; to compare the most ancient editions of the Original with one another and with the best copies of the most celebrated versions vol.1 p.12. These volumes were translated into Latin by W. A. Teller and published at Leipzig the first in 1756 the second with additions in 1765.<br /> <br /> Kennicott's scholarly endeavours attracted support in Britain and beyond. In England subscriptions amounted to £9119 7s. 6d.; in France the duc de Nivernois a former French ambassador to the court of St James patronized him and helped him to gain access to Parisian manuscript collections in 1767; the king of Denmark offered him the use of six ancient manuscripts; four quarto volumes of variant readings were sent to him on the king of Sardinia's orders; and the stadholder of the Netherlands made an annual donation of 30 guineas. His first report On the Collation of the Hebrew Manuscripts of the Old Testament was forwarded to the subscribers in December 1760 and a similar statement appeared each year until 1769. This annual summary afforded him an opportunity to defend the accuracy of his own collations the Hebraic scholarship of the staff assisting him and to print lists of subscribers. A copy of the entire work was personally presented by Kennicott to George III. Lowth called the 1776 variorum Old Testament 'a work the greatest and most important that has been undertaken and accomplished since the Revolution of Letters' B. An early judgement on this seminal edition is provided by William Orme in his 1824 Bibliotheca Biblica: “This is beyond all comparison the most splendid edition of the Hebrew Scriptures ever published. It was patronized by most of the crowned heads of Europe. It occupied its learned editor in preparation or actual labour more than thirty years. More than six hundred MSS. and editions were collated for it in all parts of Europe. The text is that of Vander Hooght without the points. The Samaritan Pentateuch where it differs from the Hebrew text is printed in parallel columns in the Hebrew character. The various readings are almost innumerable and occupy in general the largest half of every page. The Dissertatio Generalis annexed to the second volume is invaluable for the information which it contains respecting the state of the original text and the sound principles of criticism which it exhibits." The final leaf lists 312 manuscripts and some printed editions which provided the various readings noted throughout the apparatus. Strand Kenneth "Saur German Bibles" Andrews University Studies Spring/Summer 1994 Vol. 32 Nos. 1-2 57-106.The second edition printed by Christopher Saur II the first edition having been published in 1743. Saur's family immigrated to Pennsylvania from Westphalia in 1724. Saur and his father advocated for Quaker causes via their printing activities in Pennsylvania. Saur was in charge of the bindery and of English language publications at his father's business. After his father's death Saur II continued to publish their newspaper their almanacs and their religious books bibles and hymnals etc. In 1773 Saur the II established a paper mill on the Schuylkill River which would greatly increase his wealth and standing in British America. However because of his later reluctance to participate in the American Revolution due to his Quaker beliefs Saur would have his house and properties sold off and died poor. This is the first Bible printed in any European language in the Continental United States. The 1763 edition eliminated Saur I's postface and included a new Foreword. 2000 copies of this second edition were printed. A Fair only example with significant loss to the spine and leather on the boards exposing the gatherings and the wood of the boards; lacks the first title page the free front endpaper the foreword the table of contents and the first page of the Old Testament; leaves show some dampstains and a few tiny tears. Het werk bestaat uit bijbelse geschiedenissen uit zowel het Oude als Nieuwe Testament en de Apocriefen beschreven door de franse theoloog David Martin 1639-1721. Geïllustreerd met 2 titelprenten 234 gravures in de tekst en 29 ovalen vignetten. De gravures zijn van de hand van diverse kunstenaars waaronder Jan Luyken Jan Goeree Bernard Picart en Gerard Hoet. De ovale vignetten zijn allemaal van den hand van Jan Luyken. The so- called ""Small Print Bible of Mortier"" contemporary vellum Folio H. 345 x W. 225 x D. 6 cm. The binding is stained spine repaired two pages in the bottom margin with a tear. Front and back of the book the margins are slightly stained otherwise a good copy with extremely sharp engravings. The work consists of biblical histories from both the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha described by the French theologian David Martin 1639-1721. Illustrated with 2 title prints 234 engravings in the text and 29 oval vignettes. The engravings are by various artists including Jan Luyken Jan Goeree Bernard Picart and Gerard Hoet. The Cole title is bound before the general title to the Bible and 204 plates on 51 leaves are inserted in the appropriate places through the biblical text. Later black calf binding the boards panelled with gilt rolls and corner tools. The spine with raised bands and gilt pallets. Rubbed on the edges and corners and an old damp mark at the top of the rear board not visible on the text leaves. Marbled endpapers. Occasional headlines or catchwords trimmed by the binder. The paper shows spotting or toning as the sheets vary through the volume. There is a specially printed presentation leaf bound before the Common Prayer 'The GIFT of Mr. James Hudsonto His Godson JAMES CRISP.April 16. MDCCXXIX.' and two sheets of genealogical information at the end of the volume much of it concerning a related family named Agg. A handsome example of an extra-illustrated Georgian King James Bible. Two engraved frontispieces historiated initials two small engravings single large foldout map "Map shewing ye Situation of Paradice". Modern rebind is pristine and tight; text block very good overall with only the first few and last few leaves a tad edgeworn and age toned else remainder quite bright and clean with only very occasional touches of foxing and occasional discreet vintage mends; small chip to lower corner of first frontispiece not touching image; map shows paper loss along right and bottom portions the whole neatly remounted to full-size sheet. Attractive early printing of this Oxford Bible first produced by the King's Printer Baskett in 1716 and whose son Thomas later produced them mid-century -- not a so-called "Vinegar Bible" the famous typographical error in Luke XX noting the "parable of the vinegar" corrected here to "vineyard." Other than "To the Most High and Might Prince James" opening single leaf the "Translouters to the Reader" section addressing the editions consulted and the entire text that follows is done in two-column format. The Old Testament and Apocrypha are followed by the sectional title page and frontispiece for the New Testament concluding with a lengthy index and foldout map. Inner flyleaf bears 18th century ownership signature of "Tomas Hawkes / His Book." A lovely handleable copy of this large lectern Bible hence " Appointed to be Read in Churches". Interestingly laid loose into this copy is a quite lovely unsigned 9" X 13½" ink-and-wash drawing of a small cottage on a hillside in the foreground with rolling countryside in the distance along with other ephemeral fragments used as place markers in this Bible: an 1849 receipt from draper and grocer John Sneath of Wragby England and several odd scraps torn from books and a newspaper ten pages from a tiny hymnal and portions of a letterhead and invitation. The beautiful binding was made by the ""Eerste Stadhouderlijke Bindererij"". This is the first edition of this work published by the publisher of the De Groot family.
