17632548Oxonii Oxford: E Typographeo Clarendoniano 1763. 8vo pp. iv 676. Near-contemporary tree calf spine elaborately gilt in compartments red morocco label marbled endpapers edges yellow. Some light toning and spotting. Expertly rebacked by Bernard Middleton with old backstrip laid down hinges relined. An attractive copy. In 1758 Baskerville proposed the casting of a new set of Greek types to the Oxford University Press and they ordered 2000 copies of this octavo New Testament plus 500 in quarto to be printed with the resulting type - which ended up being its only use. Negative critical reception may have contributed to its abandonment but Baskerville’s Greek face has recently been reassessed by Gerry Leonidas as an important predecessor of more modern types if perhaps not quite as elegant as that used by the Foulis press that had fallen afoul of an arbitrary typographic orthodoxy. 16349164London: Marmaduke Parsons William Stansby Robert Milbourne - Milborne 1634. An adorable early 17th century Welsh book of Common Prayer and Psalms which seen as almost obsessive devotional use to the point where many leaves are rolled one onto the next. The book has pasteboard covers with the remnants of clasps together with an improvised vernacular sheepskin outer binding. 4900Paris c1250 1250. Four vellum leaves 265x165mm with the text of I Chronicles xi-xix handwritten in black ink with red and blue capitals and red chapter numbers. The leaves are mounted and placed between two sheets of glass taped at the edges but unframed so that both sides can be read. Two of them are torn at the top corner and they are somewhat soiled to the fore-edges but otherwise they are in very good condition. The date of the leaves is post-1240 which was when the chapter numbers began to be placed in the text rather than the margins. However although the chapter numbers are in red in the text they are repeated in a small hand in black in the margin which suggests that this Bible was made on the cusp of this change. There are five lines to an inch and although this is not quite a miniature "pocket" Bible it is still written in a small hand with extensive use of abbreviations and compression. The leaves are framed out of order but could easily be reordered but the text starts with the last few lines of chapter X of 1 Chronicles and then runs through to the beginning of chapter XIX. These chapters concern the early years of the reign of David and recount his conquering of Jerusalem the bringing back of the Ark of the Covenant the defeat of the Philistines and in chapter XVII David's Prayer.
