The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br/>The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo. Alden's house "Millwood" in Cornwall PA was designed by Stanford White. .This book is the famous Dutch Lutheran Bible of 1648. It was based on the Low German Bible printed at Madeburg in 1554 which was translated by J. Bugenhagen from Luther's Bible of 1545. It was published for the use of his brother Mennonites in 1560 by N. Biestkens van Diest in Emden and became famous as the Biestkens Bible. Darlow and Moule 'Historical Catalogue of the Printed Editions of the Holy Scripture' No. 3311 says that this edition is "A revision of the 'Biestkens Bible' prepared on the basis of Luther's by Adolf Visscher of the Lutheran Church at Amsterdam. B2759A ESTC r23375 <br />The first printing of the Old Testament in Irish is usually known as 'Bedell's Bible'. William Bedell when consecrated Bishop of Kilmore in 1629 "found a deplorable state of things in his diocese. He observed with much regret that the English had all along neglected the Irish as a nation not only conquered but undisciplinable and that the clergy had scarce considered them as part of their charge but had left them wholly in the hands of their own priests without taking any other care of them but the making them pay their tithes". Disgusted by this un-Christian attitude Bedell interested himself in the Irish culture adopted simple Irish dress and totally eschewed the opulent life-style normal for seventeenth century bishops opposed corruption and tyranny where he found it sought the company of and accepted the hospitality of his catholic Irish neighbours and avoided that of the rich and not only learned the Irish language himself but insisted on its use by his Protestant diocesan clergy. His enthusiasm and sympathy for the Irish earned him their trust affection and respect; he became for them 'optimus anglorum' the best of the English and on his death during the bitter 1641-2 war he was paid the unprecedented honour of being given a military funeral by the local Irish chieftains.His most enduring achievement is the translation of Bible or more precisely the Old Testament into the Irish language. Bedell saw an Irish Bible as an essential element in bringing the Word of God to the people indeed the making available of the scriptures in the vernacular was a key and characteristic element of the Protestant project throughout Europe. He secured the services of competent persons Murtagh King and Dennis Sheridan to translate the Bible and he himself revised the whole comparing it with the Hebrew Greek and Latin so as to correct the errors of the English. He had got to the stage of making preparations for its printing in his own house but the war and his death in 1642 prevented that and for years his manuscript version of it passed through many hands until the famous Robert Boyle scientist philosopher and theologian heard of it later in the century.<br />Boyle born into a wealthy Co. Cork family had been taught Irish in his childhood both at home and at Eton. Boyle like Bedell was passionate about making the Scriptures available in vernacular languages. In 1680 he had a new Irish type manufactured by Joseph Moxon to enable the reprinting in 1681 of the New Testament in Irish first printed almost a century earlier and he resolved to print Bedell's manuscript also. When he obtained it it was in such "a confused heap pitifully defaced and broken" that it had to be reworked and parts of it retranslated. This task of re-editing the manuscript was undertaken by Narcissus Marsh Provost of Trinity College Dublin and a man who shared many of Bedell's attitudes. Marsh engaged as his collaborators Dr. Andrew Sall and Paul Higgins both good Irish scholars and both former Catholic priests. Marsh himself learned Irish to facilitate his task but his main editorial work was done on a retranslation of Bedell's work back into English that he had made for the purpose. When their work was complete Boyle who had initially offered to pay a quarter of the cost paid the whole bill and the book was printed by Everingham using the new Moxon Irish type. "The first sheet of Genesis was printed off in April and the Psalms were being printed in March 1685. The remainder of the sheets with the exception of the Apoctyphia which Boyle declined to print were run off before the end of 1685 which is the Imprint date of the Old Testament. . An intended preface seems not to have materialized" Maddison. It is sometimes stated that 500 copies were printed but to our knowledge no documentary evidence for this exists. Boyle had indeed contracted to print 500 of the New Testament of 1681 and the printer printed off at least another 180 so it may be supposed that the number of Old Testaments printed would have been similar. When Boyle in 1702 discovered that Irish was also the language of large parts of Scotland "he still had some copies of the Old Testament in Irish since distribution in Ireland had not succeeded so well as expected" Maddison. He subsequently sent the circa 80 remaining copies to Scotland together with the circa 150 remaining New Testaments.<br />It seems very likely given its early Scottish provenance that the present copy is one of those 80 copies sent to Scotland. Lawrence Colquhoun was the 1st Earl of Killermont ca.1682-1770. The armorial bookplate is that of his descendant Archibald Campbell Colquhoun c1755-1820 of Clathick and Killermont son of Agnes Colquhoun heiress of Killermont. He was Lord Advocate Sheriff of Perthshire and M.P. for Dumbartonshire. He adopted the additional name of Colquhoun on succeeding his mother at Killermont in 1804.Vide: R. E. W. The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading "and hee went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. The second edition 1613 She Bible was printed in subsequent years 1613 1617 1634 1640/39 with the variant "and she went into the citie." The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years but most here appear to originate from 1617.</p><p>Arguably the most important book ever published in English. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." Double page plate of Adam and Eve in the Garden featuring a variety of animals including a unicorn. The second double page plate with vestments and details of the tabernacle. All edges gilt with inner dentelles. </p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> The text is clean and bright appearing unread; Garden of Eden plate mounted to stub with repaired closed tear; Map of Jerusalem with a few short closed tears. Joints in volume 2 cracked but holding firm.</p><p><strong>Note:</strong> A very good copy of the popular Restoration Bible celebrating the return of Charles II. The text was first published the previous year by John Field printer to the University of Cambridge who had been commissioned to supply a lectern bible for use in churches and libraries. Former university Vice-Chancellor John Worthington noted that "For a fair large letter large paper with fair margin … there was never such a Bible in being". All page edges are coated in thick gilt a.e.g. Bound in after the preface are eighteen leaves of the Genealogies of Holy scripture and a sheet containing a map of Canaan with a table on the reverse by J.S. John Speed. These 38 pages are hand-numbered in red ink with some underlining and notations and one leaf had a torn corner with loss repaired in blank. M6 with repair to margin and Aa5 with repair to margin on lower corner. Title page with small tear to the lower gutter. Minor foxing scattered lightly throughout text minor soiling to some page edges and some small spots of staining to the page edges. Printed in two columns. Octavo 8vo with height measuring 6 13/16" or 172mm. Unpaginated; A-I8 K-T8 V8 X-Z8 Aa-Ii8 Kk-Mm8 Nn7 Yy4-8 Zz8 Aaa-Iii8 Kkk-8. The Genealogies which accompany this book have a similar typographical history to that of the King James Bible itself. John Speed was granted a patent in 1610 for ten years to issue and insert his Genealogies and double-page general map engraved by Elstrack in every edition of this Bible. ìThe King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation.It has been described as ëthe only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committeeà and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M. An adorable early 17th century Welsh book of Common Prayer and Psalms which seen as almost obsessive devotional use to the point where many leaves are rolled one onto the next. The book has pasteboard covers with the remnants of clasps together with an improvised vernacular sheepskin outer binding. The book bears early evidence of female ownership in the inscription of 'Ann Williams' to the verso of the Psalms' title page. Salesbury and John Davies' Welsh book of Common Prayer from 1634 is found here as often bound with Edmund Prys's translation into Welsh of the Psalms. DESCRIPTION: Octavo lacking the general title - and 11 ensuing leaves; the Book of Common Prayer begins on B5 and continues to V2 as called for; title page to Psalmau Dafydd 1634: Psalms 2A-2L; M2 - complete.
