Folio. 2 114 pp. lacking 8 index pp.<br>Â Â Â Â Attractive folio King James Bible set in roman in double columns ruled in red throughout with woodcut headpieces and decorative capitals. Darlow and Moule suggest that this edition was actually printed in early 1633 as a number of copies are recorded as having their title-page dates altered by hand to read 1633 as is the case here.<br>Â Â Â Â The Apocrypha are present with the blank space on the last page of Malachi filled with an early inked "account of the several books in the Apocrypha." => The Psalter following the Bible includes music. The O.T. title-page is engraved and signed very faintly in this example by William here "Guilielmus" Hole and is framed by an elaborate architectural border displaying the coats of arms of the 12 tribes of Israel and portraits of the 12 Apostles. => The recto of the list of books is a full-page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden surrounded by animals. The New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1632 with an ornate wood-engraved border featuring Justice and Truth along with the British lion and unicorn and various architectural motifs.<br>Â Â Â Â The volume opens with two fly-leaves bearing genealogical records in several different early inked hands with dates ranging from 1743 through 1847. A copy of Speed's Genealogies precedes the Old Testament while the "Description of Canaan" with map that should close the Genealogies has been bound in after the O.T. title-page. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â ESTC S122379; Darlow & Moule 359; STC 2nd ed. 2298.5. For the edition of 1582 he revised his text based on the discovery of the important Codex Bezae Codex D a manuscript of the Gospels and Acts probably written in the 5th century and the principal witness to the Western textual tradition of the New Testament. Beza personally owned this codex and presented it to Cambridge University in 1581.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the first folio edition of the Greek New Testament to be printed in England as well as the => first GreekLatin edition of Beza's New Testament to be printed there. It is also considered by the ODCC to be the best edition of Beza's Latin translation of the New Testament. The text is based on Beza's fourth and last edition of 1598 and includes his annotations. Joachim Camerarius's commentary on the New Testament is appended at the end with its own sectional title-page and pagination.<br>Â Â Â Â Handsomely printed with an => engraved printer's device on the title-page by Wenceslas Hollar and woodcut initials head- and tailpieces this edition has the text in three parallel columns Greek Beza's Latin version and the Vulgate with a wealth of commentary above and below. Gutbier 161767 a distinguished professor at Hamburg was universally recognized as one of the leading Orientalists of his era. His work on this New Testament was based on all of the previously published Syriac editions and on two unpublished manuscripts one of which had belonged to the emperor Constantine. Darlow and Moule note that Gutbier also includes the previously missing "five books the 'pericope de adulter' and the 'comma Johanneum.'"<br>Â Â Â Â This copy has the additional engraved title-page dated 1663 but is not one of the variant issues that include the supplementary pieces mentioned on that title. The printed title-page present here matches Darlow and Moule's state d.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary calf round spine gilt spine extra handsome metal and leather closures with gilt tooling on the leather; very pretty simple single gilt-roll border on each board. Thus this is Darlow and Moule issue "B." => Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of one of the issues of this edition.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Manuscript ownership inscription of John Ray dated 1716 on retained fly-leaf; ownership signature of Robert L. Wilson New York 1818 on title-page; gilt supra-libros of Barzillai Slosson dated 1829. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. <br><br>When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences.<br>Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." A portrait of William Fulke precedes the engraved title-page both done by William Marshall. Original blind-ruled calf without any spine labeling. The front hinge has been repaired and an antique front flyleaf has been added. The engraved title page has minor browning/toning and soiling as does the engraved armorial dedication page. The title page is apparently the only 17th Century publication containing a portrait of the first Stuart King. On the title page King James faces the reader while King David is holding a harp; engraved by William Marshall active ca. 1617-1649. The title page and final page also has minor soiling. 17001002658London: Printed for Dan. Brown at the Black Swan and Bible without Temple-bar and Andr. Bell at the Cross-keys and Bible in Cornhil 1700. First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett 1663-1713 the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips my Spouse that move with skill / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire despite appearances: "some have denied that Solomon wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood however as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm which Stennett also translates here. Wing B2633AC ESTC R212810. We locate four institutional holdings in North America Emory Huntington NYPL and the American Baptist Historical Society; ESTC adds Harvard but that appears to be an error. A scarce early English translation of the most lyrical book of the Old Testament in a handsome contemporary binding. Small octavo measuring 6.5 x 4 inches: xxiv 40. Contemporary full red paneled morocco gilt raised bands spine compartments decorated in gilt marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Old ink prices to verso of front free endpaper. Gilt floral ornamentation to spine and boards ruled in gilt. End-papers renewed. First 10 leaves with marginal repairs. A few leaves in the New Testament last part closely trimmed in upper margin occassionally touchly text. Last 10 leaves with marginal repairs. Internally with occassional miscolouring and brownspotting but an overall nice copy. Engraved title-page and the engraved portrait of Christian IV all by the royal engraver Simon the Pas. Without the half-title which merely contains the printed words "BIBLIA / Paa Danske" which is almost never present. 21 - not counting the engraved title-page and the portrait 353 i.e. 354 due to the erroneous double pagination 353 226 159 ff. <br/><br/><em>A nice copy of the scarce first edition of the last i.e. the third of the Danish folio-bibles known as "Christian IV's Bible" being a slightly revised edition of the Bible of 1589 Frederik II's Bible. Christian IV is the most famous Danish king ever to have lived and the Christian IV bible is extremely sought-after. The numerous woodcut illustrations are the same that were used for the Frederik II's Bibel from 1589. The four engraved leaves - the portrait and the three title-pages - are by Simon de Pas. Despite already having two beautiful folio-bibles Denmark's supply of Bibles was insufficient for the nation's needs. In many parishes only the church had a copy with a few more in the homes of the wealthy. This shortage was particularly severe in Norway due to its distance from the capital which limited the benefits of initiatives from the King. Funds were raised from churches in Zealand and Norway with Norway contributing generously. Two printers Melchior Martzan and Salomon Sartor were employed with Martzan overseeing corrections and sales. Norwegian churches' significant contributions were rewarded with copies equivalent to their donations while Zealand's lesser contributions received no compensation. Biblioteca Danica I 9. 163360241Kiøbenhaffn Melchior Martzan og Salomon Sartor 1632- 1633. Folio binding: 37 x 25 cm. Bound in a spledid contemporary full calf binding over wooden boards. Rich elaborate gilding to both boards and spine. The gilding is vague especially on the front board but the tooling is very sharp and the binding overall is magnificent. With four beautiful ornamented brass edges to each board and two large ornamented brass clasps. All edges are gilt and beautifully blindtooled. Wear to capitals where the cords are loosening a bit and with a bit of loss of leather. A bit of wear to hinges at the cords which are showing. But overall the binding is in splendid condition. Also internally extremely well preserved. The title-page has a tiny restored hole to lower right corner and the first four leaves might have been inserted. They are slightly smaller at the outer margin than the other leaves. But that might also be due to restoration as the binding has not been tampered with at any point and is completely unrestored. The text is unusually nice clean and fresh by far the nicest copy we have ever come across. Pasted-down front end-paper with the ownership signature and lacquered coat-of-arms seal of Severin Svanenhielm Severin Seehusen 1664-1726 as well as the ownership signatures of Søren Schiøtz 1796-1863 with names of members of his family C. Th. Zahle and Erik Zahle. With the book plate of William Davignon d. 1924. The brass corners carry the initials HL and are depicted in Johannes Rudbeck's Svenska Bokband I fig. 26 p.53. The binding there is dated 1622 whereas our binding is from 1633 or right after. The brass fittings were a commercial merchandise for sale in Germany and probably also in both Sweden and Denmark. Morten Hansen Seehuusen 1629-1694 was a merchant from Bredstedt in Schleswig-Holstein who re-located to Stavanger Norway. His son Severin Seehusen 1664-1726 was an official in Bergen as well as in Stavanger and Northern Norway. He owned among other properties Damsgård Manor outside Bergen Svanøy in Sunnfjord and Arnegård in Stavanger. In 1720 Severin Seehausen was ennobled under the name Svanenhielm. Søren Daniel Schiøtz 1796-1863 was a Norwegian bailiff and judge who was also very much engaged in religious matters and came to play an important role in the history of theology in Norway. He was one of the founders of the Norwegian Mission Society and the Norwegian Israeli Mission. He translated several important upbuilding pieces from German among them a comprehensive bible history. Carl Theodor Zahle 1866 – 1946 was a highly important Danish lawyer and politician. He was prime minister of Denmark from 1909 to 1910 and again from 1913 to 1920. In 1895 he was elected member of the lower chamber of the Danish parliament for the Liberal Party. A campaigner for peace in 1905 he co-founded the Social Liberal Party Det Radikale Venstre. He stayed on as a member of Parliament for Det Radikale Venstre until 1928 when he became a member of the upper chamber of Parliament Landstinget. In 1929 he became Minister of Justice a post which he held until 1935. Zahle was instrumental in starting negotiations for a new Danish–Icelandic Act of Union in 1917 which resulted in Iceland being recognized as a sovereign nation in a personal union with the king of Denmark the following year. Erik Zahle 1898-1969 was a famous Danish art historian author and museum director. </em> hardcover

Bindet er antageligt fra sidste halvdel af 1600-tallet og ganske velbevaret.
