"There are many editions bearing this date which while agreeing closely are yet distinct . the phenomena of the various editions described under the year 1599 and the very similar edition of 1633 constitute one of the most curious problems in the bibliography of the English Bible." Genesis 3:7 with "Then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches." In good condition rebacked contemporary names and inscriptions to several pages. A very rare and desirable example of the Breeches Bible. Upon Queen Mary’s accession in 1553 “publication of the English Bible ceased in England. Many Protestants who fled to the Continent were attracted to Calvin’s Geneva. Among these exiles were eminent English Bible scholars who began work on a new translation†The Bible: 100 Landmarks 62. First published in 1560 the Geneva Bible—often called the “Breeches Bible†for its unique rendering of Genesis 3:7—was “more scholarly than any previous translation… It achieved immediate popularity and exerted an extremely powerful influence… The Geneva Version included prefaces maps and tables; and for the first time in an English Bible the verses were divided and numbered… It has been more properly called the Elizabethan family Bible since it was this version which was the first to enter the English home†PMM 83. “It became the textus receptus for the Puritan element in England. New plain endpapers.</p><p><strong>Condition</strong></p><p>Overall a clean text; trimmed close with infrequent loss to first letter of the marginal notes; a-c small stain to lower gutter; Q7-R1 old tape repair with a couple of lines of text replaced in manuscript; T2-3 upper dark marginal stain impacting three lines of text; final map with a tear along fold; Tt1-3 last few leaves of tables with tape repairs to margins.</p><p><strong>Provenance</strong></p><p>Bookplate of James Whatman 1702-1759 on front pastedown with his signature on first blank leaf. On the next four blank pp. at the front Whatman described the history of the Geneva version in a neat hand likely on his own wove paper. Whatman produced high-quality white paper in the 1740s that was used by state papers and also used in printed books. He was the first paper maker in Europe to make wove paper.</p><p><strong>Note</strong></p><p>The second edition of the Geneva version printed in Geneva. The second edition is a smaller book than the 1560 first edition. The Apocrypha was removed from this copy likely by a zealous Puritan. The Psalter was an integral part of this edition and is lacking from this copy but four of the five maps are present.</p><p><strong>Scarcity</strong></p><p>RBH records only three copies at auction since 1910. The text is the Geneva version with Tomson's NT but Junius's Revelation. Contemporary blind panelled calf binding over bevelled oak boards with brass corners and centre pieces. Fittings for clasps remain but the clasps themselves are lacking. Rebacked in the nineteenth century with the original spine re-laid and a title label and date added to the spine. The joints now have short splits. Signatures A and B in the OT are misbound but complete and there are similar misbound leaves in the NT Paul's Epistles. STC 2173. Herbert 247. BOUND WITH Two right profitable and fruitfull Concordances as issued and with a fragment of The Whole Booke of Psalmes . Printed by John Windet for the Assignes of Richard Daye 1598 ends at Psalm xxxiii. There are old paper tape repairs in places to strengthen edges and clear evidence of centuries of use throughout. The 19th century endpapers are inscribed Alfred Holwell The Gift of his Parents 1874 which probably dates the rebacking. There are also two pages of family tree of the Holwell family. The verso of the NT title page has 18th century records of the Raven Norfolk family. A complete and unsophisticated copy of the the actual 1599 printing. A tall well margined copy bound in plain dark calf over bevelled oak boards. Rebacked at some time with heavy raised bands and two contrasting labels. The endpapers are uniformly toned and brittle due to the acidity of the boards. The general title page is printed in red and black and may have been washed. The Prologue leaves have old marginal repairs and are soiled. This copy lacks all but 3 leaves of sigs Aa and Bb having only the title and the two leaves of the Prologue. Ai has a fore edge repair with slight loss of text. Ai and Aii have slight worming at the lower corner. A iii has a repair to the lower margin. Qi Qviii and Sig. R have lower margins extended. AAi the title to The Thirde Parte is defective with loss at the foot. EEi and sigs.FF and GG have the lower margins extended. HHiv and HHv have repairs to the fore edge. MMvii and MMviii have repairs to a small burn affecting a few words. Apocrypha title and Aaa viii are repaired at the foot. The NT title page is laid down. Aaa viii is remargined on the fore edge. At the end it lacks all after Ooviii i.e. the final leaf of Revelations the Psalter and the Table to Find the Epistles. An attractive copy of Elizabeth I's Great Bible with the text almost complete. The text itself is substantially Coverdale's translation. PROVENANCE: Inscription Robert Walshaw was born at Flockton Mill in the parish of Thornil Thornhill and in the year of Our Lord 1693. Several signatures of Nathaniel Shirt and Nathaniel Shirt Jun. from 1758 onwards. Nathaniel Shirt married Ann Walshaw at Penistone 21 February 1758 and a Nathaniel Shirt was vicar of Kirkburton in the 1650s. All these locations are close to Huddersfield West Yorks. Herbert 119. II Epistles Revelation. <br><br>An interleaved and heavily annotated copy of the Gospels and Acts of "Beza's third major edition of the Greek New Testament. The text follows that of the second major edition 1582 with only five exceptions" Darlow and Moule. => One should note that the title-page proclaims this "quarta editio" and that this is Estienne's third folio printing of Beza's N.T.<br>Â Â Â Â Beza's New Testament Greek text is here accompanied by his Latin and the Vulgate i.e. Catholic Latin translations the trio appearing in parallel columns on each page with => extensive notes that often fill as much as one-third to one-half of a page and with parallel references additionally set in the margins. The volume's title-page is printed in red and black and bears Henri Estienne's printer's device; a different finely wrought woodcut headpiece opens each book with each column on those pages bearing a woodcut initial at its head and a few of the books of the N.T. end with woodcut tailpieces.<br>Â Â Â Â Evidence of readership: An interleaved copy with => the vast majority of the leaves bearing an early 19th-century reader's notes and annotations. The notes cite references published as late as 1809 and it is clear that the natively German-speaking scholar was comfortable in Greek Hebrew Latin and English.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership signature on title-page of Leon St. Vincent. Later in The Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released; no markings.<br>Â Â Â Â The paper stock used for the interleaving has the classic ProPatria watermark and that and its countermark match Churchill's 151 which has a starting date of 1799. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Darlow & Moule 4650; Adams B1711. On the interleaves' watermarks see: Churchill Watermarks in paper in Holland England France etc. in the XVII and XVIII centuries. 19th-century half vellum with German pastepaper over boards spine with tinted and tooled label text recased and new endpapers; vol. Text in italic headlines and chapter headings in roman; printed marginalia. Later pigskin over bevelled boards tooled in blind brass clasps one of two and catches manuscript title at spine. Extensive old manuscript notes at front endleaf and four blank leaves at the end including the two integral blanks; occasional marginalia and underlining. Title soiled with some slight erosion at margin from oxidation of the clasps else a very good copy with clean fresh text throughout. Complete with the two final blank leaves.<br /> <br /> Second Gryphius edition and a rather uncommon early sixteenth-century printing of Erasmus’ Latin translation of the New Testament first published at Basel in 1516. According to Baudrier Ly. V. 804101/Cat. de Lignerolles Paris Porquet 1894 no. 48 Gryphius first published this translation in 1542 and 1543 as a 16mo of 847 pages; neither of these issues appear in Deleveau & Hillard. Like the present edition these early Gryphius printings of the Erasmus New Testament survive in only a handful of copies. The text opens with Erasmus' dedication to pope Leo X followed by his preface to the reader a general index of the New Testament corpus a listing of the chapters of the four Gospels and a brief passage from Jerome's catalogue of ecclesiastical writings. The editor's introductions precede each book. The text concludes with Erasmus' translation of a brief discussion of apocryphal literature partly from Athanasius though Erasmus questions the attribution: "De libris utriusque testamenti partim reiectus aut non sine contradictione admissis partim apocryphis ex Athanasio tametsi mihi suspectus est titulus." <br /> <br /> Provenance and annotations: Extensive early annotations in more than one hand appear throughout the book; many marginal notes have been added throughout the Gospel of Matthew. At the front of the book beginning with the free endleaf: "Poeta de Pythogora" several stanzas in Latin and Greek; facing the title: A morning prayer "Oro matutina lecturis oracula divina" 11 lines; an accounting of biblical eras 10 lines since Abraham David and the Babylonian Exile appears at the verso of the title leaf. The final blank page the two intergral blank leaves and two additional blanks added by the binder are filled with notes in several different hands including: a passage from Augustine's De doctrina christianae 14 lines; noted as book 2 chapters 11 and 12 along with four lines about Tertullian; four pages of notes on the twelve disciples numbered; a Greek text discussing the divine names in which the tetragrammaton is written in Hebrew letters; a passage from a letter of Basilius Magnus in Greek with Latin translation.<br /> <br /> Printed label of Edward Davis Hoblyn 1809-1881 and his manuscript entry dated 1831 at the free endleaf. Edward was likely related to the renowned book collector Robert Hoblyn 1710-1756 of Cornwall. A catalogue of Robert’s collection was printed in 1768 as Bibliotheca Hobliniana and reissued by Murray in 1769 with a new titlepage. The library remained with Robert’s widow and was sold in 1778. The present work is not listed in the Bibliotheca though no fewer than nineteen 16th-century Latin Bibles and Testaments appear in the catalogue. Gift inscription of D. N. Goodman of San Francisco California to Father J. L. Damas at front pastedown dated 1935. References: Baudrier 8 217. Baumgarten Nach. v. merkw. Büchern 8 1755 206 noting that this and the later Gryphius edition which Le Long assigns to the master printer’s workshop are in fact identical and notable examples of elegant typography. The third edition of the Latin Bible printed in England in this case printing Tremellius and Junius's version of the Old Testament with Beza's translation of the New Testament accompanied by Tremellius's version based on the edition printed in Geneva in 1590 see D&M 6182. Texts printed in double columns. The complete text was printed in six parts each with a divisional title and independent pagination or foliation. The fifth part Junius's translation of The Apocrypha was never bound into this copy. A variant of this edition with the imprint for "Guliel. N." i.e. William Norton appeared the same year. In six parts each with divisional title page and separate pagination or foliation. The title pages to the Old Testament read "Bibliorum pars secunda -tertia quarta ." and "Libri apocryphi sive appendix Testamenti Veteris .". The divisional titles to part 4 and the Apocrypha are dated 1592. That to the New Testament reads "D.N. Jesu Christi Testamentum Novum ." and bears the imprint "Londini excudebant reg. typograph. Anno salutis humanæ 1592.". Tremellius's and Be`ze's versions of the New Testament are printed in parallel columns. P6 2S6 4X4 and 2L4 are blank. Bound in modern tan goatskin with handmade paper endpapers. Old endpapers preserved. Titlepage laid down with minor loss at lower corner. Some wear to lower blank corners at both ends of the volume evidence of its having been disbound fora considerable time.
