1971 · 002823 — Ithaca: Modern Indonesia Project Southeast Asia Program Cornell University 1971. On October 1st 1965 an attempted coup d'état by breakaway army rebels in Jakarta resulted in the murder of six army generals followed by the claim that the rebels had control of the reins of power in the country. In fact the coup collapsed later the same day but triggered rightist General Suharto to retaliate brutally against then President Sukarno's socialist government and its supporters. Blaming Sukarno and the Indonesian Communist party for the coup Suharto's followers then undertook a bloody seven month genocidal purge of anyone who opposed them resulting the death of an estimated half million to a million Indonesians. The present paper challenged Suharto's version of the cause of the coup immediately putting the authors at odds both with Indonesian Government and the CIA who supported Suharto and his version of events. Originally marked 'Confidential - Not to be Circulated or Copied' the document was widely forged misquoted and maligned; it was eventually made public in this 1971 monograph to provide clarity to what the authors had actually stated. An important document offering a nuanced view of the actual causes one of the worst mass murders in modern world history.
