Very good due to moderate wear to boards; internally near fine with a hint of dust soiling. <br /> <br /> This is a gorgeous and strikingly illustrated genealogy commissioned by a 25 year-old New York socialite not long after the loss of her well-known father as well as her marriage to a British military officer. <br /> <br /> Ruth Moore was born in Brooklyn around 1874 and was the daughter of John Godfrey Moore. John Godfrey was a major industrialist during the Gilded Age and was best known for successfully suing the United States government in 1893 to stop the new income tax act ultimately delaying it by 20 years. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in 1899 leaving Ruth with half of his massive estate. Ruth married Arthur Hamilton Lee soon after her father's death in 1899. With Ruth's inheritance Arthur was able to retire from the military in his early 30s and start a very successful political career in Britain being elected to the House of Commons in 1900. Arthur also maintained a robust correspondence with President Theodore Roosevelt. The couple later donated their country estate – Chequers – in 1917 to the British government for use in perpetuity by successive prime ministers. Arthur became Viscount Lee of Fareham a member of the House of Lords and Ruth became a Viscountess until her death in 1965. <br /> <br /> The genealogist was a woman Miss M.L. Hawley and we are unable to find anything about her. The artist W.H. Abbott ran a business in New York called “The Bureau of Heraldry†and published Heraldry Illustrated in 1897. This book begins with an elaborately designed title page in ink and watercolor and Moore's family is traced back to 1653. Included among the handsomely written data are 30 heraldic crests in ink and watercolor. They are as large as five inches by three inches and many are heightened with gold and/or silver. All leap off the page while colorfully representing the following families: Andrews Bidwell Bissell Capron Champernowne Cutts Denison Dodge Dyer Filley Fitch Garfield Goodhue Griswold Green Howland Littlefield Millet Newberry Parish Phelps Pinney Ridley Stoughton Thayer Tracy Tuttle Wadsworth Warham Wilson. <br /> <br /> Simply stunning. unknown

In 1875 the Supreme Court would close the door on this line of thinking and suffragettes would have to change strategies but this leaflet proceeds all that; it's still heady with fresh ideas and a brand new organization appealing for funds and women's names for a pledge book compiled by the NWSEC Secretary. Small dampstain in bottom right corner touching the image in five instances. Very good. A nice association this being the copy owned by Helen French Soule the great-niece of the author Helen A. French whose pen name was Ruth Chesterfield. Tipped in is a letter in which Helen Soule passes the book on to her relative Amos Tuck French whose bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. The text is printed within paneled floral and geometric illustrations further illustrated down one side by scenes from the story. L. Prang hardcover books

Small hole from seal-opening with loss of a few words some creasing postmark on back sheet remnant of wax seal on back page; otherwise very good. This autograph letter in a highly legible hand is to her younger sister Harriet E. Cossitt Claremont in New Hampshire.</p><p>Christmas "is not observed here in the same manner that it is there no churches holding religious services on that day. I attended the celebration of the Sons of Temperance on Christmas day… Christmas week is considered as 'the holidays of the year' for white and black. No work is the order for all servants but house servants and they have their parties suppers and their candy boilings and pullings as they say for I do not attend such sweet places. It would amuse you to see their smiling ebony faces bowing and grinning as they claim their Christmas gifts and 'yes massa' or 'please missa' may I do this or that having more privileges than many poor intelligent whites."These words were uncharacteristic of other New England observers of the antebellum South who were appalled by slavery and expressed only sympathy for the enslaved even if some noted that many poor whites both North and South also lived a meager existence in contrast with so-called "privileged" Negroes. Emily Cossitt 1813-1897 was a 37-year-old unmarried woman from a wealthy New Hampshire family her father being President of the local bank. Her uncle whom she was visiting was a Presbyterian Minister and religious matters were one of her principal interests much of this letter concerning a local dispute between a Baptist and a Methodist clergyman. She was well-educated – she opens the letter with a flowery poem – and perhaps something of a snob. Neither she nor her two sisters would ever marry. This may explain her disdain for her uncle's slaves perhaps less racism than simple arrogance. Despite a racist tone the letter has good content concerning African Americans in pre–Civil War America.</p>
