From Publishers Weekly: "Obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD is a widespread psychiatric disease yet one virtually unknown to the public according to Rapoport a child psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health. She cites surveys indicating that as many as four million Americans are afflicted with a need to perform complex pointless rituals or are burdened by crippling obsessions with petty thoughts. Some sufferers check light-switches or doors endlessly; others spend hours creating trivial symmetryshoelaces exactly matching eyebrows identical; still others have a compulsion to touch count hoard or confess; some enact toilet or eating rituals. Very few of the afflicted seek professional treatment: most attempt to conceal their condition even from friends and family. Rapoport holds that psychoanalysis usually fails to uncover the underlying causes of an obsessional pattern; she leans toward a behavioral approach noting that the disorder often runs in families and pointing to biological factors. Casebook shocking report and support tool all in one this excellent volume is highly readable and free of jargon. " -- with a bonus offer-- . E P Dutton hardcover

Description: " M Schindler 18871953 was a pivotal Modernist architect who remained largely unrecognized by the critical establishment during his lifetime. A pragmatist and theoretician Schindler designed more than 500 projects over 150 of which were built most of these in the Los Angeles area where he settled in 1920. Trained in Vienna and influenced by two teachers Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner Schindler immigrated to Chicago in 1914 hoping to work for Frank Lloyd Wright. By 1918 he had attained that goal and two years later he moved to Los Angeles as project architect for Wright's famous Barnsdall House. In his own practice which began in 1922 Schindler synthesized the ideas of Loos Wagner and Wright into his own original and distinct approach which he called 'space architecture'. This book focuses on Schindler's influences and on an analysis of his buildings. It includes rare archival material and new photography by Grant Mudford as well as over 150 redrawn plans sections and diagrams." -- with a bonus offer-- . Phaidon Press hardcover
