1854List1708Philadelphia 1854. Ninth plate ambrotypes in a union case measuring 2 ½ x 2 ⅛ inches visible in larger case. With the identification of Isaac Rehn with his imprint and “Patented July 4 & 11 1854†imprinted on the case. A fine pair. A striking pair of ambrotypes of Mary and Moses Pennock who were members of the Kennett Square Underground Railroad network as well as active members of the Kennett Square abolitionist and Quaker community. Moses was one of the founders of the Longwood Progressive Meeting. In R.C. Smedley’s History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and Neighboring Counties of Pennsylvania Lancaster Office of the Journal 1883 the Pennocks are mentioned on p. 301 as working as part of the network surrounding Isaac and Thamazine Meredity. Their son Samuel who would go on to secure important agricultural patents is also mentioned twice.

The images are notable from a photographic history perspective as well as being early examples of the ambrotype process that had been patented in part by fellow Quaker and spiritualist Isaac Rehn. Rehn held a partial patent on ambrotypes along with James Ambrose Cutting of Boston and became unpopular among other photographers for his efforts to extend his patent. He later practiced spiritual photography and was a Professor of Chemistry at Pennsylvania Medical University in Philadelphia. Rehn was also involved in radical politics as a founder and leader of the Philadelphia section of the International Workingmen’s Association which was later disenfranchised by Karl Marx along with several other American sections. Examples of Rehn’s work are held at the National Gallery of Art the Library Company of Philadelphia and Yale’s Sterling Memorial Library.

Overall a very fine and significant pair of images. unknown

Doles published several songs and even republished a few with modifications mostly on local subject matter. This piece takes its name from the newly invented aerial machine:

"The air ship may prove to be a failure but 'The Air Ship Waltz' is destined to be a grand success."

OCLC cites holdings at the Smithsonian Indiana Michigan and Baylor Universities. . 1976List1517Los Angeles 1976. Eight kodachrome slides showing Foxx with one possibly related slide of a woman included as well. Unpublished originally taken for the May 6 1976 issue of Jet Magazine Vol. 50 No. 7 which is also included here. Fine condition magazine nearly fine with slightest tanning. Fine. Redd Foxx left NBC in 1976 after a successful run of six seasons of Sanford and Sun and went to ABC producing a short-lived show called The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour which was canceled after its first season due to poor ratings despite wide critical acclaim. Jet Magazine covered the transition in an article in 1976 with photographs by Isaac Sutton. Offered here are eight unused images from the shoot capturing Foxx in a range of setings including a swimming pool and on his moped riding around Los Angeles. A nice group from the height of Foxx’s career in comedy although his stint at ABC would wind up being a disappointment considering his earlier success. unknown
1890List01105Massachusetts 1890. Albumen and Silver Gelatin Prints 9 ¾ x 8 ¾ - 8 x 6 inches on larger mounts three with credits to Conant photographer one credited to Benjamin Freeman and one uncredited. Varying wear very good condition overall. Very Good. The Isaac Royall house in Medford which still exists as a museum is most notable for the existence of one of the only separate quarters for enslaved people to exist in Massachusetts. The house was used during the revolution after Isaac Royall Jr. fled to England and had several owners before the Daughters of the American Revolution turned it into a museum in 1898. Collected here are three photographs from the opening of the museum likely taken by Benjamin Howe Conant with Conant on rectos of two and the other matching an image currently on the museum’s site. Another larger albumen print shows the main house with a woman at the door likely from the 1880s. Perhaps most interesting is the fifth image taken by Benjamin Freeman of Somerville likely in the 1880s with the inscription “View from Slave illegible Showing House in right Driveway on left.†We find no other record of this image which features a well dressed couple in the midground and has retained excellent contrast. unknown

17928953Newburyport MA: John Mycall 1792. Hard Cover. Good binding. 12mo. 288 pp. Early printing. Originally issued with Watts's "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" not present here though the Psalms are complete. In recent cloth with tasteful printed paper label. Only light soiling to the binding; contents toned and foxed; a few leaves with some wear and chipping to the margins or corners; a solid copy with an illegible early owner name "Burlington August 1818 / University of Vermont."

Mycall's revision of Watts's psalter was first issued in 1781. In it Mycall removed all references to Great Britain and King George exchanging them with references to the nascent United States—a significant declaration in its own right and one that really captures the fervor of the revolutionary American. Ezra Stiles that monumental American theologian and president of Yale describes Mycall's edition in his diary entry for 8 December 1781 calling it "well adapted to the Church in America." Though there are several psalms that were revised by Mycall Stiles specifically points to 75th Psalm titled: "Power and government from God alone Applied to the glorious revolution in America July 4th 1776." Verse 2 reading: "America was was sic doom'd a slave / Her frame dissolv'd her fears were great; / When God a right'ous Council gave / To bear the pillars of the State." An early but post-revolution imprint of this important revolutionary psalter. Evans 23106; ESTC W4416; The Literary Diary of Ezra Stiles. New York 1901. Vol II p. 571. John Mycall unknown
