Isaac D'Israeli's study on the notable literary figures and their qualities examining their lives and experiences to explore what makes them successful. As explained in the preface to the work the author wrote the original work in his youth and after finding a copy of his work with critiquing notes added to the margin decided to re-write the work and add to it. The work also mentions particular prominent literary and intellectual figures such as Galileo Newton Bacon Milton and many more. Bound in full modern paper covered boards. Bound in modern paper covered boards endpapers renewed. Externally slight sunning to the spine with a couple very minor tidemarks to the head of the spine slight bumping to the extremities and the odd slight mark. Bookplate of A.N.L. A most attractive little publication 4" x 2. 5" approx 10cm x 6.5 cm in sewn blue wraps with a woodcut of children praying around a table below the title in a charming decorative border. Very clean. Internally the woodcut and title is repeated on the first page - a good deep impression - NO date shown but likely 1815/30 . The rest of the book is unillustrated but contains what is probably a version of Watt's 'The First Set of Catechisms and Prayers; or the Religion of Little Children under Seven Years of Age'. 30pp. Excellent condition clean tight and bright. NO inscriptions or marks. "Isaac Watts is most well-known as a Nonconformist hymn-writer. Many of his compositions are still in common use today & his Divine Songs first published in 1715 is considered the first hymn-book for children. Wattss non-hymnal writings include catechisms composed for children of various ages. The first set for children under seven years of age & the second set for children from seven to twelve years of age. Both are fully bound in leather. They are much worn and scuffed all about. Despite wear along the seams the spines are sure and secure. They have a venerable character and are confident. Within the contents are much worn and there have been attempts at repair. In general however the pages are clear and benign. Thumb tags are sound. Coloured plates are fresh and bright. There are occasional annotations. Both books have a previous owner Henry William Ellis - dated Jan 1907 signature. A charming topographical guide for children. The second edition of this work. 'Scenes in England' is an interesting early nineteenth century travel book looking at various places around England and Wales with recommendations of what to do whilst visiting. Some of the places included are Buckinghamshire Staffordshire Dorestshire Cornwall Oxford Essex and Lincolnshire. Isaac Taylor was a historical writer artist and inventor. He started out his career by illustrating some of his sister's Jane Taylor's books Jane being the person who wrote the words for 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. Isaac also wrote 'The Elements of Thought' 'The Process of Historical Proof' 'Home Education' and 'The Physical Theory of Another Life'. With a folding frontispiece of a map of England and Wales and a further twenty-eight plates. Collated from Copac complete. In the original publisher's quarter roan binding with paper to the boards. Externally sound. Light rubbing to the boards causing a little discolouration. A little bumping to the extremities. Slight rubbing to the joints and to the spine. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and with light offsetting to some pages due to the plates. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page 'A. W. G'.
