1974131516New York: Chelsea Theater Center 1974. Original script for the 1974 play. Based on the 1962 short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer and adapted by him and playwright Leah Napolin for the stage the play premiered October 25 1975 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran for a total of 223 performances. Tovah Feldshuh was nominated for a Tony for her portrayal of the title role.

Faithful to the original story the play follows a young woman who begins living as a man named Anshel after her father dies in order to continue studying the Torah in defiance of Jewish tradition. An early exploration of transgender identity as Anshel describes himself as "neither one sex nor the other" and having "the soul of a man in the body of a woman." Yentl's choice to live as Anshel even after being discovered strongly contrasts with the text of the better known Barbra Streisand musical film purportedly despised by Singer where the transgender aspect of the narrative is replaced by a more heteronormative romance.

Blue studio wrappers. Title page present dated 1974 with credits for novelist Singer and playwright Napolin. 155 leaves mimeograph duplication. Pages Very Good plus wrapper Very Good bound with two gold brads. Original publisher's decorated binding some minor scrapes to the boards; paper lightly toned by age and one plate with outer margin and corner with small tears; otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Beautifully rendered colored lithograph plates of the botanical work of Isaac Sprague the "most accurate of living botanical artist . . ." working in the late 19th century. The plates based on water color drawings were printed by Nims and Knight the noted Troy New York publisher who specialized among other subjects in illustrated books and botanical art. Sprague was the younger brother of Hosea Sprague the meteorologist and local historian of Hingham Massachusetts who at an early age was apprenticed to a carriage painter where his skills were quickly recognized. His ability to translate observed object into drawings caught the attention of James Audubon and in 1840 he accompanied him on his trip up the Missouri River to sketch quadrupeds. Upon is return he was introduced to Asa Gray and began a long collaboration of rendering botanical specimens into drawings for Gray's works. Gray was quoted as saying that Sprague "raised the level of botanical illustration in this country to that of the great European centers." John Galluzzo. 1778WRCAM41363Virginia 1778. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed Cox refers to "Yohogania County" a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans mostly Iroquois who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia north of Steubenville Ohio and would have had close associations with Washington County Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed. unknown books
1809006608Cheapside London: T. Tegg November 1809. NA. Very Good. Framed. 38 by 47 cm. The hand-colored engraving itself measures 24 by 33 cm. Used in a theatrical promotion for a performance by Charles Kemble at the Theatre Royale in Covent Garden in 1809. This print is part six in a set. While George Cruikshank is credited with this print there was speculation that his father Isaac Cruikshank might have collaborated on it or done it in its entirety as the style is somewhat different -- looser or more abstract in its conception -- than the other prints in the set. Here Kemble in costume surrounded by Old Price Riot iconography gallops towards "The Road to Ruin" the title of a Holcroft play performed in 1809. Old prices and economy are scattered to the winds. The horse reins and saddle-cloth are covered with particulars of the affair; likewise Kemble's clothes. Actors are likened to vagrants strollers vagabonds prostitues. Contempt for the profession was shared for different reasons by both the high and low born and Kemble was seen as essentially not knowing his proper place. The print suggests that the theater and also the nation would only be returned to health when Kemble was chastened and put back in his place.

T. Tegg unknown books
