BLOCH & CO. Cincinnati O.' Rabbi Isaac Leeser 1806-1868 received Talmudic instruction and linguistic training in his native Germany. After coming to this country at the age of 17 he assisted his uncle a merchant at Richmond Va. When some articles he had written in defense of Judaism attracted atten-tion he was invited in 1829 to become hazzan or precentor of the Congregation Mikveh Israel at Philadelphia. The next year he began to deliver sermons and became recognized as the pioneer of the Jewish pulpit in this country. His Collected Discourses were published in ten volumes in 1867. Rabbi Leeser had long hoped to prepare an English version of the Holy Scriptures for his fellow Jews. About 1838 he announced his project and began publishing at his own expense seven years later. Concerning the style of his translation Rabbi Leeser wrote in Postscript to Deuteronomy p 147 that 'it has been the Editor's endeavor to furnish as nearly as pos-sible a literal transcript of the Hebrew and any harshness which may have hence resulted he trusts will be kindly overlooked for the fidelity to the original. . While he made full use of the works of German writers from Mendelssohn on he refrained from consulting with English-speaking Jews. His only acknowledgment among English writers is to the editor of Bagster's Comprehensive Bible William Greenfield. He adopted the German and Hebrew text of Wolf Heidenheim published between 1818-1821 for his edition of the pentateuch. Margaret Hills The English Bible In America §1540. Those positions combined with income from his estate made him both financially secure and almost free from prescribed duties. His great researches on optics were the first fruits of that freedom. However at the same time he became an earnest student of both alchemy and of theology. His surviving manuscripts show that in the latter field he reached firstly an anti-Trinitarian or Arian position which developed into an even more radical position which saw Jesus as merely the latest of a series of prophets sent by God to reclaim mankind from false gods a position Newton developed in the 1680s in the unpublished manuscript of "his most important theological composition 'Theologiae gentilis origines philosophicae' 'The philosophical origins of gentile theology'" O.D.N.B.
Such opinions were completely unacceptable to contemporary society and Newton realising that they would have undermined his position kept them a closely guarded secret but in later life he revisited the treatise and "thoroughly purged it became his 'Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended' 1728. The original treatise he kept to himself . When he died his heirs found the completed manuscript of the Chronology which they immediately sold to a publisher for £350" O.D.N.B. and the book was published shortly thereafter.
The book was distributed in Dublin by Smith and Bruce. John Smith an Ulster Presbyterian whose radical activities had led to his expulsion from Glasgow University in 1722 came to Dublin in 1724 where with the sympathetically minded William Smith and later William Bruce he established a book-selling business. They were notable for their intellectual and continental connections they were cousins of the philosopher Francis Hutcheson and their publication of works challenging conventional opinions.
E. Hudson is probably Edward Hudson 1703 ca. - 1757 of Ardee Co. Louth who having entered Trinity College in 1722 aged 19 became a Fellow in 1728 the year of publication of this book. He was later Rector of Omagh. The signature on the title page may be that of Rev. George Thomas Payne 1819-1888 of Kilkenny who had entered T.C.D. in 1833.
Printed for J. Tonson, J. 1838957Z7London: John Murray 1838. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". None stated. The first edition of Robert Isaac and Samuel Wilberforce's five volume biography on the life of their father William Wilberforce covering his life and efforts to abolish slavery with a bookplate and signature from William Wilberforce. The first edition. With a signed note by Wilberforce. This is clearly an earlier note as this work was published after his death. With the bookplate of 'William Wilberforce' to the front with his gift inscription tucked inside the endpapers of 'Vol I'. The inscription reads 'Given to my dear Saml 16th may 1829 by W. Wilberforce'. Illustrated with monochrome frontispieces including a folding timeline of the abolition of slavery to 'Vol II' and three folding facsimiles of Wilberforce's handwriting to the rear of 'Vol IV'. Collated complete. A five volume complete set. Five years after his death the sons of William Wilberforce Robert and Samuel Wilberforce published this five-volume biography detailing the life and accomplishments of their father. William Wilberforce was a British politician philanthropist and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade alongside activist Thomas Clarkson. The work sparked some controversy after Thomas Clarkson expressed distaste for their biased version of the role William played in the abolition movement. The volumes explore the man's childhood education his conversion to becoming an Evangelical Anglican and his expansive political career. There are also letters that were sent by Wilberforce included in the text. Previously owned by Godfrey F Laurence with their family bookplate being the descendants of French Laurence who is mentioned in this work. In the publisher's original cloth re-backed with endpapers renewed half titles retained. Externally very smart with slight fading to the extremities of the boards the odd minor mark and the slightest edge wear. 'Laurence' family bookplate and bookseller's label to the front pastedowns and owner's signature to front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages with the odd spot. Very Good Indeed John Murray hardcover

The French translations did not follow the Spanish book divisions exactly and the entire cycle in the French version extends to 24 books. Note that the book numbers of the French translation do not always correspond to the book numbers of the Spanish originals and in both languages "book" is not the same as "printed volume"; physical printed books sometimes contained more than one "book" of the series.
