1727026143London: J. Tonson 1727. First Edition. Quarto. 12 327 pages 18 leaves of tables one folding errata mounted to bottom of the second page of contents verso. This volume includes plate 18 which was done by Sir Isaac Newton near the end of his life Wallis 'Newton & Newtoniana' #357 while he was Master of the British Mint 1700-1727; During Newton's tenure at the mint he issued at least thirteen reports which like this one are all rare. Table 34 which is a fold-out of plate 18 is among his very last original works accomplished in his lifetime. While Newton is certainly best known for his scientific work in mathematics and physics a large part of his working life was his time as Master of the Mint; in fact his precise measurements enabled savings in the minting process. The previous system had not been uniform his keen measurements enabled an exact weight in determining the number of grains in an ounce of gold with precision had not been available previous to his work. The table is also known in Scottish bibliographies for the section on Scottish Weights and Measurements. Bound in full calf ruled in gilt earlier and fine rebacking decoratively stamped in gilt renewed endpapers all edges red wear to corners some toning. A very good copy. J. Tonson unknown books

54541Parisiis Paris: Apud Amberosium & Hieronymum Drouart . cum privilegio Regis 1603. First edition thus. 2 parts in 1 vol. 4to. pp. xx 375 lvii; 576 xxxvi. Illustrations in text. Title-page to first part in red and black to second part in black only woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces with final errata leaf. Top corner of title-page a little frayed first leaf of text with 2-line note in blue biro to head margin head margins a bit dusty with very occasional light dampstains occasional spots of foxing a few paper flaws to fore-edge margins. Small scorch marks to pp.47-8 and pp.101-4 affecting a few letters smudgy mark ink or wax to fore-edge margin pp.115-22 ink spots to p.345. Contemporary semi-limp vellum fore-edges slightly overlapped. Quite browned covers somewhat creased ties lost turn-ins lifting without ffep but still good and sound overall. Latin inscription in an old hand to title-page translates roughly as 'from the common library of the preachers of Dijon'. First appearance of Casaubon's edition of this collection of biographies of the emperors from Hadrian to Carinus considered to be the first critical edition and also the first to use the title Historiæ Augustæ. The title as recorded on the 9th-century Codex Palatinus manuscript of the Vatican Library is Vitae Diversorum Principum et Tyrannorum a Divo Hadriano usque ad Numerianum Diversis compositae and it is generally thought that the work may have been originally known as de Vita Caesarum or Vitae Caesarum. In early editions 'the emphasis had been laid on the Latin text but in the seventeenth century the work of the editors included not only textual emendation but comment and illustration. Of these editions the first was that of Casaubon published in 1603. It was not unnatural that these biographies should have attracted the editor of Suetonius and Polybius and the scholar who wrote in the preface to his edition of the Historia Augusta that "political philosophy may be learned from history and ethical from biography."' from David Magie's introduction to his 1921 Loeb edition. Though its authenticity was regarded with a little scepticism Casaubon's edition was for hundreds of years used as a genuine source by historians including Edward Gibbon in the first volume of his Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Browning sums up the tricky position the work occupies: "in modern times most scholars read the work as a piece of deliberate mystification written much later than its purported date however the fundamentalist view still has distinguished support. The Historia Augusta is also unfortunately the principal Latin source for a century of Roman history. The historian must make use of it but only with extreme circumspection and caution." 1812154499London: T. Egerton 1812. First published 1796 last revised by Landmann's son George in 1853 for the seventh edition. All editions of this groundbreaking work of military education are uncommon perhaps a couple of dozen locations world-wide for all just 8 for this inevitably uncommon at auction. Landmann 1741-1826 had taught for many years at the École Royale Militaire in Paris before his appointment in 1777 as professor of fortification and artillery at the Royal Military Academy: "A letter from the Board of Ordnance to the lieutenant-governor of the academy introduced him as a gentleman who 'has seen a great deal of service and acted as ADC to Marshal Broglie in the last war'. He was highly thought of and was a technical scholar who had great influence over the many young men he taught for a period of nearly thirty-eight years" ODNB. His clever adoption of the catechetical form to inculcate the basics of the complexities of fortification was ahead of its time and clearly effective. Octavo 210 x 130 mm. With 3 engraved plates at the rear. Contemporary full calf red morocco longitudinal label to spine. Bound with half-title. Slightly rubbed particularly at the extremities front joint cracked to the cords but holding front board a touch discoloured endpapers lightly tan-burned text mildly toned but overall a very good copy. unknown

The book is printed in Gothic type with the original titles also in Hebrew type. 4 394 2 pp. Very rare copy of an important work for the history of the German Jews in the age of Emancipation. One of the many editions of these Gebete which are translated from the Hebrew the chief work of Isaac Euchel one of the most important German jews of the Enlightenment. The original edition of the Gebete appeared in 1786 in Königsberg other editions: Vienna 1790-98; there exists also a 'Zweite Auflage': Berlin 1799. After the prayers follows "Massecheth Aboth" in 6 parts teaching the Jewish laws and the rules for a virtuous life. In the preface the publisher explains that the first edition of this excellent translation from the Hebrew is long since sold out. This and the fact that many Israelites especially the women do not have suficient knowledge of the Hebrew language and that also many Christians visit the Synagoge which by the graciousness of the Emperor was recently established at Vienna convinced the publisher that the book will find a wide public. With a manuscript owner's inscription on the recto of the first free flyleaf "Salomon Landesman Teplitz. 18. 1986168
Isaac Asimov - born in Soviet Russia in 1920 in the Smolensk region in a Jewish family. World famous science fiction writer author of about 500 works mostly fiction and popular science. Some terms from his works - robotics positronic psychohistory - have entered English and other languages. He is a multiple winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards. In the Anglo-American literary tradition Isaac Asimov together with Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Heinlein is considered to be one of the 'Big Three' science fiction writers.

He was a very popular author in the Soviet Union. Perhaps the first work by Isaac Asimov published in the Soviet Union was the 1958 short story The Feeling of Power published translated by Zinaide Bobyr in two magazines at once: Nauka i Zhizn #11 and Iskatel in #6 of 1962. In 1964 for the first time in the USSR Isaac Asimov's solo collection a series of short stories I Robot translated by Alexey Jordan where the world-famous Three Laws of Robotics were formulated was published. In the 1960s Asimov was published extensively in Soviet journals. In 1966 the Library of Modern Fiction series published Isaac Asimov's novel The End of Eternity translated by Yuri Estrin. In the 1970s-80s other works by Asimov were published in magazines and in separate editions. However the Soviet publishing system was rather slow with each publication requiring a separate authorisation. Fiction fans could not wait for literary officials to make a decision to publish another work.

Therefore underground translations of Western authors published in samizdat in typewritten copies and distributed privately began as early as the 1960s. This process became particularly active in the late 1970s and early 1980s when new copying technology became available. Translations were often unnamed for reasons of translator safety. Hundreds of works of Western fiction were translated in a short period of time. Then when in the late 1980s and early 1990s it became possible to print books of this kind in official printing houses some of the samizdat translations were printed. However not all of them! Therefore in the bibliography of Asimov's translations into Russian the first translation of 'Robots and Empire' is listed only in 2003! Thus the samizdat translation went unnoticed and is not listed anywhere. It survived in a small number of copies which did not end up in libraries and on the shelves of collectors.

The translation is a photocopy from a typewritten copy 435 pages of text. In good condition. Rarity.

Not available in libraries worldwide.
Samizdat
