Facsimile reproductions of the major works of Isaac Watts. 8vo sewn bindings in green cloth. Ex-library with spine labels removed usual paraphernali but entirely clean and sharp otherwise with little evidence of use. Shipped professionaly in a box. 'There were few intellectuals in the eighteenth century who had a greater public impact that Isaac Watts 1674-1748. His books went into countless editions and were standard texts in non-conformist colleges from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Harvard and Yale. Watts was versatile and his writings broad-ranging including metaphysics logic astronomy moral philosophy geography natural and revealed theology church politics and organization education and many other related matters. Today Watts is best remembered as the author of some of the most well-known hymns in the English language as well as sermons and stories for children. However his other writings although hugely influential in their day and read by all intellectuals in the eighteenth century are now often overlooked. This collection gathers these now-scarce major works. Influenced by and critically responding to Descartes's dualism Boyle and Newton's physical philosophy Lock'es metaphysics and epistomology and the works of the deists Watt's writings brought these thinkers to the attention of eighteenth-century readers. For example his study of Locke's Essay did a great deal to make the work accesible to a wider audience. The Selected Works of Isaac Watts will become an essential resource for those undertaking a study of eighteenth-century philosophical and theological debates. The collection features an extensive new introduction by Andrew Pyle which includes a detailed account of Watt's life and works and a description of each title in the set.' Publisher's blurb.
